February summary

February. 🙄 What is this shit?

February 1st; a.k.a. day of the biggest snowstorm of year. Probably 10 years even. Maybe more. Can’t recall last time school was cancelled because of snow.

So clearly we’re stuck in winter until…July? That’s great.

I’ve struggled with the reading. Started reading a number of books on my TBR, didn’t really care for any of them and quickly removed them from TBR. At least I had the presence of mind to not stick with them.

Reread Idun by Johanne Hildebrandt and Incubus by Carol Goodman instead. Both of which are still absolute favorites; they read like pop songs. Idun, by the way, is the only book ever to make me cry. Which I’d forgotten and tried to write it off as PMS. It. Wasn’t.

Meanwhile, started on this pile:

Let’s see how many will make it into next month’s post. (..if any?)

Food things

Hummus. Specifically sun dried tomato + smoked paprika hummus, with a pinch of garlic salt. Gawd the years I wasted on cheese. Honestly. Why is vegan cheese? I know it not.

It would be easier to list the things I’m not adding this concoction to. Also doesn’t matter what type bean/lentil you use for the hummus, long as there is sun dried tomato (in oil) + smoked paprika and some form of garlic. The expression it is life I suppose would make sense here?

Big helping of a smoky, red lentil hummus.

But if I’m giving you one food tip this month it’s these apple protein muffins. They’re so moist, and cinnamony, you should give them a go!

Face stuff

Finally caved and introduced a twice weekly hydration mask into my skincare routine. I did have a hydrating mask in my collection already, but because it’s inefficient, it never became a regular in my routine. Sooo…if you’re thinking about getting the Body Shop’s British Rose Fresh Plumping Mask, I would say don’t. Get the No7 Hydration Mask instead! You will not regret it.

H&M single eyeshadow Down to Earth. I like having a darker shade to pop in my bag for touch-ups, or when I arrive at work, finally wake up and realize that’s just not enough makeup. This one, it’s great for that! Love how it’s a cooler type brown with a metallic finish.

Tried a gel eyeliner. I started missing just a wee smudge of liner; decided to give gel a go because I cannot stand pens and I don’t want the perfection of a liquid (or similar) liner. Maybe it’s good. But unfortunately, the H&M drama cream eyeliner is not for people with sensitive eyes. Like me. Definitely not.

Treated myself to a new highlighter from MUA. Cheap as they come and on the gold side, this’ll last me years to be sure.

Also ditto blush. Cheap as they come, not on the yellow side to be fair, rather a cold pink and I do love it so.

Blog post worth mentioning

This and this post by Annahita at *whinar* about how we care about all ethical aspects of the beauty industry, except for how workers are treatedbest posts I read all month. I want + need more posts like this! Why are there not more posts like this? I wish I could write them myself but I clearly lack knowledge and need people to tell me.

Bottom line: consumption is unethical. Buying fair trade makes little to no difference. If you want to make a difference, you need to get into politics. And it’s proof that we need regulation and legislation.

Best Insta add

Instaglasgow. I remain obsessed with Glasgow. There is clearly something wrong with me. Oooor is this objectively the prettiest place on earth…? I’m going with yes.

Course. Edinburgh, not far behind.

Listened to

!! ionnalee. See now, this makes watching Go’ Kväll worth while. It does happen that they invite someone that’s just amazing. Ionnalee reminds me of Jennie Abrahamsson, coincidentally also a discovery via Go’ Kväll, with a splash of Eivør. Someone on the show knows good electronica.

Also. Have you listened to Mike Shinoda’s Post Traumatic EP? You might want to. The first two tracks have really caught my ear. So to speak? if pushed, Over and over might be my favorite of the two (gawd my love of repetition is great).

Also. Casey’s Phosphenes. Looking forward to the album release in March!

Monthly menstrual report

I thought I had my cycles all figured out but this cycle, it’s not behaving as expected. I honestly don’t know what it’s doing. I’m on day 46. Which is great, because that means at least one month of no PMS. This might be the PMS phase but symptoms are vague at best, with the exception of a hypochondria currently telling me I’m gluten intolerant. Like FFS, at least don’t go with the goddamn trend.

If it’s not PMS it means I’m just a hypochondriac. Regardless of hormonal levels. I’m not sure how I feel about that.

This cycle, it’s not making sense. Yay for longer cycle obvs, but predictability, there is something to be said for predictability.

Also yay because I’ve finally taken some responsibility and picked up a tampons from a brand that does not test on animals and is better for the environment. But ngh, so uncomfortable free bleeding feels like a better option. And that’s with a big helping of lube. So the less the bleeding, the less tampons I need consume.

Maybe I should just ask to for the Cerazette back? Feels like I keep getting back to maybe Cerazette wasn’t half bad.

4 things that happened this week

My favorite Primark bag broke. It had just been promoted regular gym bag. Boo. Whatever bag shall I use now?

Jaja, it’s only a seam, but still. That handle is no good to me now.

I was served lots of great vegan food. We had some sort of work conference/lecture + workshop about stress, performance and recovery. It was, surprisingly, really good. The lecturer talked all about the hormones, what happens to the body when you’re stressed, how you should trust your body and not start chugging down lots of water because that’s supposedly healthy—your body will tell you when you need water, it’s called thirst, that yoga and meditation really isn’t necessary—folding the laundry could be just the thing to give you that mental recovery you need. As I was saying, it was really good.

The venue served some v. decent vegan food, despite not being specialized on vegans at all.

Pulled vego, apple and fennel salad, and some absolutely lovely carrot puree. And topped with some greens! Makes the eye happy too.

My foundation started behaving in a really weird way. I’d just started using the Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation, I was quite pleased. It played really well with the Urban Decay Self-Adjusting Complexion Primer, which was just a disaster combined with my previous foundation; it just seemed to enhance the appearance of pores, and who needs that? With the Naked Skin though, while the primer is still not a perfect match for me, it’s zero percent bad. Also, the shade of the foundation was a good match for me, and I’m loving the medium coverage. I can even apply it with a damp sponge, contrary to popular belief. What more could you ask of a foundation?

But then on Tuesday it suddenly started looking beyond patchy. So terrible wearing no foundation was a better option.

Turns out, it doesn’t work with the serum from Codage at all. That’s the downside of indulging in skincare, if something is wrong you can’t for sure say which of all the products are not agreeing. Could be any number, any combination, or the type of application, even using too much or too little of something.

What was good in all this, was that in the process of trouble-shooting I realized that introducing a weekly hydrating mask into my routine is necessary. This is still something I struggle with; because I’m combination on the oily side, adding hydration strikes me as counterintuitive. Even if I know we all need some extra hydration this time of year, still think it can’t possibly apply to me. (Because I’m special, apparently.)

Got myself a mask from No7 without doing any research first. We’ll see how that works out.

Friday workout was cancelled second week in a row. Got to go home early. And had a valid excuse to not go to the gym. Should be happy.

I was not happy.

I was very unhappy.

Super unhappy.

Funny thing: I used to hate the Friday workout class. But exactly two weeks ago I noted that it had suddenly gone from detestable to my favorite class of the week. Should not have as much as thought it. Jinxed it for sure.

6 empties

6!? You might be wondering, but there are 7 items in the picture!? Can’t she count?

Well. It is true I’m not great with numbers, but in this particular case…for unknown reasons the Neal’s Yard clay mask was hanging out with my other empties. Probably because I’m keeping it to use as a travel container. I’ve talked about it here, let’s not mention it again, because sadly, not that great.

The Body Shop Pink Grapefruit Shower Gel. What I love most about this shower gel is that post shower it makes my entire apartment smell like pink grapefruit. Would repurchase!

Neal’s Yard Facial Wash. I love the smell of palmarosa. However, there are other cheaper facial washes that are as good. There are also better washes. Pixi Mud Cleanser z.B. Good thing I bought a starter kit and not full size, because…

Neal’s Yard Toner. Again, I love the smell, but there are products that are a much better fit for my skin. I’m unsure if this one does anything for me at all.

GOSH Illuminating Primer. I’ve talked about this one before, and it’s not a perfect match for my oily/combination skin. Unless you like oils coming through after the 6 hour mark, this is not a primer for you. Personally, I don’t mind; it reduces appearance of pores, makes my foundation go on beautifully, has a bit of coverage, what more could you ask for?? There are better ones, granted, but this is not a bad budget option at all.

Sephora Prep and Perfect Primer. If you know your cruelty free, you’ll wonder just what the hell I’m doing with a Sephora primer, they’re not cruelty free?! Indeed, they are not. I ordered some Kat von D from Sephora and this sample was included in my order. Rather than waste it, I used it. And it’s good. Dear Sephora, please go cruelty free asap! This primer, I want to give you monies for it!

However. Until that day, will not repurchase because they are not cruelty free. 100% deal-breaker for me, because there are other primers, so many other primers…

Maria Åkerberg Face Lotion. I am really struggling with the organic products, they are not doing it for me. I want to love Maria Åkerberg, but so far, the Maria Åkerberg products I’ve tried have been meh at best.

This one is not memorable. It’s not the worst face cream I’ve tried in my life, but it does not balance my oils, so, it’s not for me.

Best of January

Caroline Hirons! Did the best post for the first day of the year. She’s got some excellent ideas about what to leave in 2017, including very sound arguments. Go read!

Especially love how while she’s not cruelty-free, she still argues pro-cruelty free. 💕

E.l.f. smudge brush. I bought three E.l.f. brushes: concealer brush, blending brush and smudge brush (the one with the white handle, obviously). While I am happy with the purchase overall, I’m less than convinced that the concealer brush and blending brush are as good as it gets. There could well be better ones out there. (Cheaper? Probably not.) The smudge brush though, so pleased with its performance!

I’ve tried a few different foot feeling masks now, my favorite so far is this one:

Sunday mask! Little something for the feet.

A post shared by @ lisaanniesette on

I shall tell you why: feet peel quicker than with other masks I’ve tried, deeper peel and rather than peeling a bit at a time for days and days, more skin peeled off at the same time, for about three days and then it was done. You just have to appreciate that.

If you haven’t tried foot peeling masks yet you need to get to it! Foot cream and files is all good and well, but this stuff! Makes so much more of a difference.

PMS-podden. Still! Had to run to the library to get their book too. I wish you could all read it.

TV show

First Dates. Currently my favorite game! (It is a game right? You watch and try to guess who will want a second date and who won’t, yes?) Who knew people could be so fascinating?!

Ack Värmland. Because Mia Skäringer is genius?

Jenny Mustard! When I saw the title of this video my instant thought was “Nooo..not her too!? I thought she was all for the body positivity?? I cannot take another ‘I’m going to get fit’ resolution, just can’t.

Spoiler: not what this video is about at all. Watch it! If you’re as bored as me with the getting fit and going on a diet bullshit you’ll like it, promise!

Found new account!

No idea why I didn’t stumble on it sooner?! I’ve missed so much!

And in case you forgot I have a one track mind, this guy alone is a reason to be on Twitter:

Added about a zillion new vegan accounts to my feed. Here is one:

Here is another:

Third one:

XCERTS released a new album. And it’s brilliant. Current fave track off of the record:

Little Jinder feat. Lykke Li; Hålla handenAnother new release that’s just brilliant.

Pvris; Are You Ten Years Ago. Have not been this taken with a song in a while. It’s a repeater!

Har du PMS, eller? by Charlie Michaelsen and Jenny Öhrn Segolsson. 💕

Monthly menstrual report

WHY AM I BLEEDING ON DAY 31 YOU BASTARD???? Ruining my stats! Also, when and why has first day of period turned into PMS x 10???

Yeayea. Mustn’t complain. I was far less exhausted during this cycle than the one before. I wonder why that is. Magnesium? Stretching? Zinc?

Apparently zinc is more important than I thought/knew. I was just taking it just in case, because there are studies saying there’s a connection between zinc deficit/becoming vegetarian at a young age and PCO.

Not that I’ve kept track, but I seem to recall the introduction of zinc supplements coinciding with the return of semi-regular cycles.

But more than anything I’m a big believer in magnesium. Emphasis on believer.

Yeayea, I’m probably peeing it all out, but one shouldn’t underestimate the effect of placebo. I’ll take anything I can get.

Best of 2017

Bitterfittan 2 by Maria Sveland.

Best read all year! Would marry this book. Basically, it’s a story illustrating feminism in practice. Need I say more?

Second best reads:

Hunger by Roxane Gay. What’s funny/scary about this book is that even if you’re half the size of Roxane Gay, or smaller, you can still identify.
Hela Kakan by Kakan Hermansson. Oh you know, feminism and that.
I kroppen min by Kristian Gidlund. First person account of what it’s like to know you’re dying.
Vad ska en flicka göra? by Annika Lantz. A funny take on cancer.
Raven rings by Siri Pettersen. Especially book 2 where they quote NIN. I loved that book.
That Changes Everything by Naomi Klein. People don’t change, not really, but this book got me thinking and reviewing some of the things I do.
Fördömd by Johanne Hildebrandt. It’s like..if Indiana Jones was a woman and lived in  present day Sweden. Kinda.
Mr Darcy’s Diary by Amanda Grange. Pride & Prejudice from Mr Darcy’s point of view.
På A svarar jag hejdå by Nina Hemmingsson. THIS:

And that was the last we saw of her. The end.

Speaking of reading: got myself a Storytel subscription, which is what has kept me “reading” this year. If it wasn’t for audio books, I would have read pretty much nothing.

Under huden med Kakan Hermansson. Feminism + beauty, an unholy unity, according to certain feminists. And they’re not exactly wrong.

Penntricket. More feminism! Hoping for another season in the year to come. Although it is unlikely they’ll top the fourth episode about hating men. Maybe they did the right thing calling it quits?

PMS-podden! Sure, I only just started listening to it, but it is hours and hours all about PMS. Pretty much my main interest in life.

Puma ignite trainers. Best trainers I’ve had in a while. Will repurchase!

Jeans. To be clear: black and only black. (The horror that anyone would think I’d run around in blue jeans.) I’ve abandoned my dresses and skirts for jeans; did not see that one coming.

Now. If I had any sort of blogging skills, I would have prepped pics before Sweden entered into the darkness-24-hours-a-day period. This is me trying to get a shot of my newest pair, a pair of skinny high waists at noon in front of a window:

[Oh come on, there was never any point to these pics.]

Not that it helps that all my walls are dark. And the jeans are black. But still. Love these jeans, perfect length and oddly a high waist that works for me. Unheard of! I’ve thus far hated all high waisted jeans.

Not that it matters. I think we all know what black jeans look like. Absolutely love pairing them with this striped top too.

A favorite outfit; long green top, black leggings, platform sling-backs, frilly choker.

Green top with red hair, love this combo! Also works real well with the purple hair.

Face stuff

No7 pore minimizing primer. The more other primers I try out, the more I like the No7 pore minimizing primer. Does its job, is budget friendly, what’s not to love?

Wearing no brows.

Waiting for y’all to catch up. (KIDDING. Apparently it’s me and Manson; even Sarah Hawkinson abandoned us. Oh no wait, and Jenny Mustard. OK so maybe there’s a few of us…) I need to dig out that yellow, and those metallics. I wonder what shade that is. Is it..blue..?

Body Shop Camomile Cleansing Butter.

Made me quit face wipes! This stuff is not only better for the environment, but a more efficient product that is kinder to the skin.

Pixi’s Glow Mud Cleanser + Mud Mask.

The cleanser is my AM cleanser, the one I use when I don’t wear makeup. It’s kinda like washing your face with a clay mask, which might be obvious and probably seems strange but oh, I for one love this. I am abandoning my regular foaming cleansers for clay.

As for the mask, I wanted to love other mud masks, but I kept dreaming about the Glow Mud Mask. So ja

Makeup Revolution New-trals vs neutrals.

The only palette I need! Up until now, I’ve been in a habit of adding at least one single shadow, or a quad, to whatever palette I think I can make do with. No longer the case! Not that I don’t love my other shades, I do, but this is all I need.

B. bronzer + Urban Decay Naked Skin concealer (+ Superdrug hair therapy oil with argan)

Who thought I’d add bronzer to my makeup routine at this point in life? Not me, to be sure? And the concealer, it is, unfortunately, v. v. good.

No powder. Because I’m old and my skin suddenly decided it doesn’t like it. At all. Funny thing: doesn’t seem to be any shinier than usual. Or maybe I’m learning to love my natural dewiness. Here’s hoping!

Hair stuff

Superdrug argan oil. Best hair oil I’ve tried so far. 100% in love!

Manic panic purple haze + vampire red. Makes for the perfect purple hair color. For me. But I’ll probably stick with the brown + red combo for a bit longer. Not that the straight purple was bad at all.

Maria Nila hair spray. I’ve struggled with hair sprays. They’re never quite right. This one tho! Nice smell, good hold, does not seem to causing any hair damage, it’s a keeper!

Soft water. Even better for the hair than cold rinse. I count myself lucky to have access to stoft water, even if it’s not in my home.

Finally figured out how to make waves using the flat iron. Was v. pleased with this wee wave!

A post shared by VILLFARELSER™ (@villfarelser) on

It reads: I had a solution to all the world’s problems. Eradicate mankind.

Mordisk Hatisk Bitch.

A post shared by Mordisk Hatisk Bitch (@fannyarsinoe) on

It reads: It’s not FAIR that it’s WOMEN who get to decide about abortion just because it’s their body…

(And yes, it does read their body, not bodies.)

Middag med Fredrik och hans grabbar. Had me in stitches.

Single-handedly makes all other bands on Twitter look really bad. Or at least severely boring. This is a universal truth, right? It has nothing to do with my love of sarcasm?

YouTubers I’ve been watching religiously

Kiera Rose. Bit of vegan, bit of beauty, do you need more reasons?
Sarah Hawkinson. Could watch only because she has the best red hair ever. And I like her taste in music. And she’s one of those people who cares, about a lot of things, which I guess I admire.
Jamie Genevieve. If I’m being honest, mostly watching for the Scottish and sneak peeks of Glasgow, but she is wicked good at makeup. Difficult makeup. The kind that I’m just never going to do.
Holly Exley. You should know I love Holly by now.
Tashina Combs/Logical Harmony. Mainly watching because her site logicalharmony.net is one of my go-to resources for finding out if a brand is cruelty free or not. So ja, that’s what she does, cruelty-free beauty.
Rhian Hy. Vegan cruelty-free beauty. Mostly.
Cheap Lazy Vegan. Tips on being a cheap lazy vegan!
Qcknd. Got sucked in by her moving vlogs. Made me feel fortunate to have been born in Sweden. Aaaand…she’s had a lengthy rant about the Cure and dyes her hair in fun colors.
Thataylaa. She knows the makeup. No 1 authority when it comes to foundations I would say.
Lily Melrose. These days, she mostly does fashion-related content, and some vlogs. I’m not super interested in fashion, but it’s one of those channels
Leila. You should be seeing a theme here. I like the YouTubers with a conscious.
Hannah Witton. Talks a lot about hormones, thus the basis of her appeal.
Helen Anders. This lady, super creative, I am so impressed, and I’m not easily impressed. Also absolutely love her quirky style.

Yes. And those aren’t the only ones I watch. Explains why I’m not exactly missing subscribing to any video streaming services.

Non-YouTube moving picture bits

One more time with feeling. Might be the best music documentary ever. Because of the pace. Because it includes the music off of Skeleton Tree.

Girls. Favorite episode might still be the Matthew Rhys episode. Might be.

Vikings. I’m still disappointed that they’re not incorporating the stories Johanna Hildebrandt tell in her books, which are set in the same era, but I take what I can get.

The Mindy Project. It’s..funny?

Regin. Still upset they killed off Francis and kept Sebastian. But I do love this series.

Handmaid’s Tale. Oh it was lovely, regardless of how closely it follows the book, so well done.

What the Health. It is vegan propaganda; I like vegan propaganda, I need vegan propaganda, as do you. Just FYI.

Vegan pancakes.

GB vegan ice cream. Best vegan ice cream yet! Bar mebbe the sorbets at Terre à Terre.

Cool oats. I’m a big fan of the cold porridge; started out as a practical solution, turned into something I do always when having porridge.

On to my favorite categories! The categories literally no one cares about; the only end of the year lists I’m interested in and will search for on purpose: the music categories.

I mean really, I take this seriously. This is a page from my planner:

Notes on what albums were released this year and which I’ve listened to at least once.

Also, still waiting for Robyn to release that track on Girls, HoneyWhat is taking so long??

Like last year, I have three clear favorites:

All these countless nights by Deaf Havana. I’ve no words. I just love this record. I don’t understand how it hasn’t made Deaf Havana HUGE (..although I do appreciate that that is not the case, on a personal level), is it poor marketing??

Waiting for morning to come by Being as an Ocean. Did not expect this release to match my taste so perfectly. There is something about it that reminds me of what I used to like/listen to in the 90s, but with a touch of what I like in today’s music (let’s just call it post-hardcore). Requires absolutely no effort for me to love. I’m going to go ahead and call it underrated.

Under Your Spell by the Birthday Massacre. Did not see this one coming. I know of and listen to Birthday Massacre, but mostly random songs at random times. I’ve been listening to this album on repeat.

Music makers

New discoveries/loves:

Agnes Obel. Dark and moody.

Dayseeker. Post-hardcore. Covered Thrice. Obvs brilliant.

Deaf Havana. ♥♥♥

Korn. I can learn to love Korn but not new (i.e. more recent) My Ruin? What is wrong with me??

Emma Ruth Rundle. I want to say, if you like PJ Harvey, you’ll probably like Emma Ruth as well.

Kathryn Joseph. …and if you like Emma Ruth, you’ll like Kathryn too.

Bear’s Den. Obsessed with their Red Earth & Pouring Rain.

Stray from the Path. Despite this genre generally not appealing to me (the difference between hardcore and post-hardcore is apparently huge in my world), they’ve somehow worked their way into my likes.

You might think I’d be disappointed having been only a total of 3 gigs all year. But quality over quantity! Am I congratulating myself on being able to spot the good ones? Yes I am.

Little Jinder; Sundsvall

Architects; Malmö

Malmo was excellent thank you @edmasonphoto

A post shared by Sam Carter (@samarchitects) on

Deaf Havana; Brighton

Note to self: just fucking stand up front. Never mind the fact that I’m too old; I’m sure no one can tell in the dark anyway.

Other bits

Bullet Journal. Still doing it. Slightly less passionate about it, but I don’t seem interested in giving it up.

Regular periods. On the one hand, means I can add less hormones to the ones I’ve already got wrecking havoc in my body, and that is a good thing, on the other, come on, do we have to bleed this often, really? Aren’t we too old?

Decluttered my CDs. Not a minute too soon.

Skincare obsession. A result of my usual makeup no longer sitting well on my skin. It’s my most expensive hobby yet, which is unfortunate.

…this was a while ago now. It’s expanded and become unmanageable in the space I have available. Good thing the bathroom in my new place is bigger. Just need to be patient…and stop buying stuff.

Learned how to turn off retweets. Which still means I can’t follow Roxane Gay because when she tweets she just dominates my entire feed which is a problem. Might I suggest a different medium? Blog? I’d follow!

Body pump. May it be forever this time. Or at least lifting weights. Or at least until I move because bit more strength, it would come in handy when moving (yes HI I’m super practical).

Brighton in November.

Looking forward to in 2018

MOVING. Which means I also have to sell my current place which makes me sad and nervous. Am looking forward to downsizing tho! (..in theory..?)

Following the move, I can start dying my hair again.

Seeing my cycle analysis in Clue. Yes! I am overly interested in all things menstruation! It’s what happens when you start noticing just how controlled you are by your hormones. I’m trying to work out a way to work with my hormones rather than against them, which thus far has not been the case.

Hibernate? I just want to settle into my new place and enjoy being able to go to the gym at all times and wash my hair at home.

…I mean I’d like to go to Scotland. And I’d like to see NIN. But I’d also like not being broke, which is the inevitable result of moving.

4 things in my online cart

Tricked into adding these things to my cart by emails informing me it’s 20% off all weekend (yea..I kinda already ordered this stuff), but also, that thing I mentioned the other day, about there being perfluorooctanesulfonic acid in some makeup, I have used it as an excuse to splurge on the Urban Decay Naked Skin foundation.

Both of my two current favorite foundations from Lumene, foundations I had not plans what so ever to ever abandon, yeah that stuff is in them. I just can’t keep putting something on my face that I know is toxic. Just can’t.

Fil 2017-11-19 07 11 42

Added a foundation brush to my cart just in case the Urban Decay foundation doesn’t apply well with a sponge.

And. I’m in a tinted lip gloss kinda mood, and I wanted another shade (in my defense, I only have one other tinted lip gloss), and that damn mud mask from Pixi, it just makes me very interested in trying all Pixi products because it’s sooo good.

Three down, one to go!

I need black knits of reasonable length. I.e. not reaching knees, that can be worn with jeans, as opposed to leggings.

HM knit.jpg

Still debating if I’m getting them or not. I might go to a physical shop. I might want to feel the material before buying.

5 empties

Let’s start with the one I genuinely hate. Because hate is fun. The Clarins Instant Light Brush on Perfector.

There is nothing I like about this. Let’s make a list:

a. The packaging. Even my camera hates it. Trying to get it to focus on it was pretty much impossible. But also, it is an eyesore. Gold and ugly red type. Usch. And also, twist to get product out? When I could just be clicking it out? Pft.

b. The shade. OK so, this was a sample, I didn’t pay for it, so obviously they just sent whatever shade. It’s orange. Too dark for me. Still not the worst thing about it.

c. It’s drying. Gets stuck in your lines. What do you mean perfector? What do you mean light??? Get this thing away from me!

d. It is not cruelty free. It sucks and it’s tested on animals. That’s just great.

Let’s leave this abomination and talk about a few nice products instead!

No7 Airbrush Away Pore Minimising Primer. I do love this thing and I will be repurchasing it. Reduces my shine, appearance of pores, doesn’t break me out. It’s not asking a lot, but most primers struggle to meet these criteria.

No7 Instant Radiance Under Eye Concealer. I don’t understand why this concealer has such bad reviews, it’s my favorite concealer. I’ve already repurchased it multiple times. Lasts all day, easy to apply, not dry, doesn’t emphasize lines, what more could you possibly want? Maybe it’s because I don’t use it to brighten, because my under eyes could not be any brighter if they tried. In fact, it’s the reason I wear concealer, to make them seem less bright and shiny. Can’t be just me?

Pixi Glow Mud Mask. I love this mask. I am looking for an excuse to repurchase. The one thing holding me back: apparently you’re supposed to get cheap clay masks. And there are cheaper ones. Question is, are they as good, really? I would say no, but I need confirmation.

IsaDora Volume Mascara 2.0. I want to love IsaDora, but I don’t. Not that they’re bad, but usually they’re just a bit meh. Like this mascara. It’s alright I guess. Although I shouldn’t complain, it does not irritate my eyes despite not being made for sensitive eyes, so that’s good.

Woman crush Wednesday

I have been crushing on Nicole Saboné ever since I listened to her Under huden med Kakan Hermansson episode; not only does she make brilliant music, she’s studying to be an engineer at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. I love this combination, it is unexpected. Big fan of unexpected.

And also, I do love her look, the simplicity of it appeals to me greatly:

If you’re not familiar with Nicole, you might want to give her cover of Madonna’s Frozen a listen:

This crush was recently replaced by Caroline Hirons. Not because of her skincare expertise, as you might think.

Oh no.

It’s because of her recent rant on Instagram about the poor sound quality at a gig she attended. There are few things I like as much as women ranting about gigs, especially when it’s women you maybe wouldn’t expect to. As in, women who are not exactly involved in the music industry in some way.

Also, she gushed about Chris Isaak, who was the opening act of said gig:

This is exactly what I have been looking for! I do hope she has more in store. I mean sure, skincare is all good and well, but this! Rants on music, it’s what I need. From women. There aren’t nearly enough.

Never mind that I am barely aware of either of the musicians she mentions (Wicked Game? Isn’t that a HIM song? Jk! I know it’s not, but in my world, if I talk about Wicked Game, it’s the HIM version, every time.), it’s just completely beside the point. Even if I might have been slightly more interested in a rant on the Linkin Park and Friends show. I feel it needs a rant. Just me?

I also loved her comment on how Chris Isaak knows how to not take himself seriously, while at the same time taking music seriously. Yesyes! That is exactly how we like it.

OK then. I think that’s enough already.

Love this lady.

October at a glance

Listened to

Emma Ruth Rundle. Recent find through the Spotify Release Radar. Release Radar knows me sooo much better than Weekly Discovery.

Kathryn Joseph. I loved Emma Ruth to such an extent I had to go see if there was more like it: hello, Kathyn Joseph. Kathryn is more piano, but definitely a similar sound.

Also similar: Mariam the Believer. Coincidentally released a new album this month:

Bear’s Den. People seem to compare them with Mumford & Sons. Maybe their previous record. I’d say their most recent release is more like somewhere between the Black Queen and Editors. Or like a present day Eurythmics.

Mr Darcy’s Diary by Amanda Grange💕

Simon Amstell’s Help. If you’re familiar with his standup you will like this book, and recognize parts. It’s a short and sweet one. I really liked it. Especially this part:

How was peace finally achieved? The introduction of the vagina flag.

You’re just going to have to listen to (er, read?) it if you want context. 🙂

This is probably the best haul I’ve watched, ever:

Yes please! Do give me idea on how to be a more conscious shopper! I need more hauls like this.

Linkin Park and friends. You know the remembering Chester Bennington show Linkin Park put on? It was. Confusing. But Oli did good:

Current go-to site for all questions about how to use skincare products: Paula’s Choice. Not only has it got all the answers, but satisfactory answers. I.e. skincare is simpler than people like to make it out to be. I trust it completely and it keeps giving me excellent ideas.

Tweaking my AHA and BHA routine. I’ve tried including them both in my night routine (a world of no!), doing one week AHA, followed by a week BHA, which works, but I missed the BHA. So I’m back to AHA in the mornings, BHA in the evenings.

2 new best friends

The Balm Beach Blush. I ♥ paper packaging. The color is nice obvs (read: perfect for everyday), but if I’m being honest, I did buy it because of the packaging + 30% off.

Blotterazzi. Here’s a realization I’ve made lately: my skin is no longer a fan of powder. No type powder. It’ll have my foundations starting to look cakey around lunchtime (yea yea, I’ve worn my makeup for 6 hours by then but anyway), and I am a bit shinier than I’d like. Adding powder will make things worse, sometimes adding dry patches into the mix. This here is the solution! It’s a blotting sponge, reusable and actually works, so yay!

Pulled oats! Been wanting to try this lovely fake meat from Finland. I love that it’s made from oats, and by comparison, locally produced; it’s a brilliant idea! And while I really did like it, I would hesitate to buy it again because it is pricey.

Tiny figs. Dunno if this has an official name, but what they are, are tiny, tiny figs. I’ve been loving having them with a cup of tea.

Ginger chew. I have crowned this the best piece of candy in all of the land. I’m mad about the flavor and the consistency; it’s like a fudge that doesn’t get stuck in your teeth. In addition, it is (apparently??) so satisfying to eat just the one piece. I can have it in the house and not eat all of them right away. This is unheard of!

Gave my hair a trim. I like to wait until my hair is in such bad condition that getting a brush through it is just an impossibility.

Used this nifty guide on how to do it yourself. If you have v. fine hair, like me, and also non-straight; no one can tell if the cutting isn’t straight. Which is the one bonus of this type hair. You can cut it yourself. If you can be bothered. And have pair of sharp scissors.

Spending diet. I’m supposed to be on it. Doing a terrible job.

Still a work in progress:

  • Stop bulking up on things. I am my mother’s daughter; I like to have an extra of most things. Including shoes. (Still looking for an extra pair of my fave Vagabond lace up boots like a fool? You bet!)
  • Stop getting things on sale. I’m talking about things I do want, but maybe don’t need right this very minute. I’m a sucker for the 20% off this weekend only!
  • Stop getting things as prep for travel. I always feel as if I need things for when I go away, but I suspect that’s not actually true. You can (and probably should) use same old also when traveling. My brain is not entirely on board with this idea.
  • Stop buying food that is not the cheapest. I keep buying more expensive organic products. But also, beans are less expensive than fake meat. I have not stopped buying fake meat. Really should.

I might have to try a different approach.

Kitty cuddles! Spent nearly three weeks with these guys; last few days was the beginning of this month.

I need to find a way to get my hands on a house so that I can fulfill my crazy cat lady destiny.

…not that it’s so much get my hands on a house as being held back by the knowledge that I can’t fix things. Things break in houses and I can’t fix them. When you live in an apartment there’s always someone to call.

Blog find

NotSoQuietGrrl; cruelty-free, vegan, zero waste, skincare—all the good things!

Feminist of the month/year/decade??

It reads: Message to all men worried about feminists hating men: YOU STARTED IT!!

A. Feminists—funniest people there is
B. I ♥ fannyarsinoe (as if you didn’t know)

(Even if her current crusade against people who enjoy skincare seems kinda..misdirected. But I guess there is no such thing as perfection.)

Monthly menstrual report

Clue sent me this insight when my most recent cycle started:

During the time of ovulation, you might be more drawn to symmetrical facial structures and objects.

Er. OK? ..anyone recognize this..? Their source is here, in case anyone’s interested.

Also why? We need research to find out what people find attractive at a particular point in the cycle? Or was that just a for fun type deal? Obvs only annoyed because I’m a big fan of asymmetry, no matter the point in the cycle. (Obvious example of this: I like to move things so that they’re not perfectly aligned. Perfectly aligned makes me insanely uncomfortable.)

Skincare tag pt 3

Final part of the skincare tag! Part 1 is here, and part 2 here.

If you had to stick to only one skincare brand, what would it be?

Paula’s Choice has everything you could possibly need, not only your regular creams and cleansers but treatments, the retinol and acids. V. v. important!

A few essentials from Paula’s

If I wasn’t a big believer in the chemicals I’d stick with organic. Products. I actually like using products from different brands and different price ranges. Partly because I like seeing lots of different bottles, tubes and jars on my shelf.

Best spot treatment?

On the one hand. I don’t want to lie. On the other, I don’t want to jinx myself.

Oh hell, my hormones are probably just gathering their forces so it doesn’t matter what I say. They’ll get me in the end.

I don’t really have breakouts. I can have something that is similar to a breakout if I eat a lot of peanut butter (you’d think I’m imagining things, but sadly I’m not), which is a main reason why I’ve stopped, and my favorite primer, Lumene’s mattifying primer, also used to give me something similar to breakouts (but I hear they’ve got a new primer out, v. v. interested in giving it a go!), point is, solution to that is just stop the PB, switch the primer. Oh. Yes. And don’t overdo the wine when on vacation.

Apparently my hormones are super level. (Seems to contradict my PCO status, but whatever.)

Last time I had anything that sort of was reminiscent of a breakout, I would just slap on a good clay mask and it calmed right down. Which is why I find it extremely confusing when people on YouTube talk about clay masks as “drawing out the impurities” and that the mask essentially causes breakouts (???). Never in my life etc.

So my best spot treatment is: just don’t. Don’t have fun and don’t enjoy life and you’ll be fine! 🙂

Favorite step of your skincare routine?

The cleanser step, easy. Because washing off makeup is just about the best feeling there is.

Favorite cleanser combo: the Body Shop camomile cleanser followed by Pixi’s mud cleanser, which I’m growing quite fond of. I only have a small tube to try it out, but I may just have to get the full size. And soon.

What’s on your skincare wishlist?

This could be a post in itself. Let’s do five.

The Ordinary. I keep hearing such good things of this brand, I’m particularly interested in their AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution.

REN. Specifically their Glycolactic radiance renewal mask. It promises to remove dead skin cells, reduce lines and clean out your pores, how can you not be interested in that?

Pixi’s Hydrating Milky Mist. It doesn’t seem to be for my skin type, but I did see someone who is also oily combination say that it was a beautiful primer. I’m in the market for a primer that has more skincare type qualities than just a straight up primer, so maybe this could be an option?

Paula’s Choice. The BHA 9%, which you can’t get in Sweden, which is just beyond annoying. Somebody claimed this is the best thing for your pores, v. v. interested! But I guess I could go for the 10% niacinamide booster, which also targets pores and which is far easier for me to get my hands on.

Neal’s Yard. I’m interested in a long list of their products. High up on the list: their mattifier. They also have a lavender shampoo that I’m kinda keen on, I imagine it’d be like washing your hair with Lush’s Sleepy lotion, and I just want to live in that scent!

This was a terrible idea. I now feel the need to review what I have, to see if maybe there are more things I need.

And we all know where that ends.
