books, life

Dear March,

We were not off to a good start, were we? Car that needed fixing, coworkers clearly trying to kill me by dumping all of their work on me and going off on holidays (???), and then cats being sicker than usual – such fun SUCH FUN.

There were a few things that didn’t suck though.

Music

Casey released a video for Little Bird (track off their 2016 release Love is not enough).

Not sure if it’s objectively good or if I’m just being a fangirl.

The new Johannes Oerding is everything you want from Johannes:

Best track all March tho, the new Robyn track. If there is one track from March 2017 you need in your life it’s Robyn’s Honey:

Been double-checking if the full track has been released like a woman possessed. Quite embarrassing really. If it wasn’t released on Friday it’s probably not going to be released on Saturday morning either, now is it?

Wearables

I got more shoes. (SIGH.) If you’re going to be a mindful shopper, you need to not watch hauls. I don’t so much anymore. Not as an active decision it just lost its appeal. Partly because I actually, sometimes, like what I find in my closet and have no need to buy more stuff, and partly because I’m not sure where to even fit more stuff and still be able to find said stuff, and if you’re not in the market for another item, hauls aren’t that much fun.

Except when it’s Helen Anderz. I’ll watch pretty much anything she puts out. In the end. Sometimes I’m a bit like “weeellllll.. I don’t really need to know how to dye your hair purple because that’s not something I’m going to be doing”.

However. Helen’s videos can be watched even if the content isn’t on the top of your list of interests. They’re that good.

Alright then. That quickly turned into some sort of poorly disguised fangirl rant. Point was: she hauled platform canvas boots and I couldn’t resist. A boot for summer you say!? I needs it!

On the screen

Just kiss my frog on YouTube. I don’t know how I haven’t stumbled on this channel sooner. I am so in love. Leena posts videos on books, feminism, cruelty free makeup, and her PCOS. Basically, all of my top interests, and she does it so, so well.

Example! Tips for your TBR:

And I really, really want to recommend this old video too, which is a defense of makeup, she makes a convincing argument I feel.

…but somebody please inform her that Not Another Happy Ending is not set in Edinburgh. It’s basically a commercial for Glasgow. I should know, it’s the reason I’ve watched it. I would comment. Only. I hate people who only comment to correct someone else. I don’t want to be that person.

Feud. The story didn’t appeal much to me so I only started watching it as a result of nothing more to watch, but oh, now, I am so in love. The combination of feminism, Susan Sarandon, Jessica Lange and a bit of history is just brilliant.

Food

Oatmeal. If I could eat one thing only for the rest of my life it’d be oatmeal. I’ve been having it for breakfast and dinner on a regular basis. Also a good way to save a bit of extra money, if that’s something you’re interested in.

Miscellaneous

Left the Lush hair treatment Jasmine And Henna Fluff-Eaze on for an hour + (sister called, and I have my priorities straight) turns out it was just what my hair needed. Similarly…

Maria Nila Color Refresh in the shade autumn red. My god. My hair was never this shiny! And the red is just about perfection. V. v. impressed. One only wishes they’d start doing actual hair dye too.

I correctly predicted when my period was going to turn up. All by myself! Sans any sort of tool. I love Clue and all, but it does feel kind of great to be able to figure things out with your very own brain box, no training or outside help necessary. I’m all for the collecting data, finding patterns, figuring things out, but on a personal level, it’s a releif that I can rely on my brain for something at least. Gives me some sort of hope.

Nina Björk’s reply to Sigrid Aliki’s text in Bang. I’m not usually impressed with the academic rhetorics, but for Björk I will make an exception. Not only eloquent, but also convincing. Not to mention relieved; clearly I needn’t feel bad I didn’t quite manage to get through Aliki’s text. (Yes HI blind faith, Nina Björk is one of my many gods. For those of you unfamiliar with Swedish culture, Björk is one of our best known feminists, she’s an academic and frequently uses feminist theory to analyse literature. Basically.)

Plans for April

  1. First gig of the year!? I’m seeing Little Jinder. And I’m not even traveling for it! Last time I didn’t travel for a gig was…2011 or 2012. Jonathan Johansson, Pipeline, the Klagomuren tour. Which was brilliant. Might have mentioned that before.
  2. THANK GOD FOR EASTER. I need days and days off. Want to save my holidays for the winter tho, not sure work will let me. But maybe I should ask how they’d feel about me taking say all of March off next year? This is one useless month.

Week summary

It’s fall! Have you noticed how it’s fall?? It is here anyway. So many reasons to love fall. Morning walks in the mist is one.

Before you know it, it’ll be October. Can’t wait!

I got more boots. And with that, I’m all set for shoes for this fall/winter.

Black bootcuts from H&M. Yes. You know my why do people even bother with pants when there’s dresses!?!!?? claim? I take it back, take it back! I still love my dresses, that goes without saying, but I do see a use for bootcuts as well. At least now. Because these are bootcuts every bit as good as last time they were popular. And I don’t usually like H&M pants. So that’s a pleasant surprise. Also: they go really well with my Roobin’s.

Decided the gym going, it has to stop. I didn’t want it to, because I identify with this gym. Apparently. I’ve been going since 2003; it was one of the main things I missed about Sweden when living in Scotland. But it’s just not what it used to be. I didn’t use to leave raging (crap music! people! barely sweating! grumble grumble and I had to stress here too!), so you know, considering my own sanity, I’ve decided enough’s enough.

Telling myself it’ll be OK, and dragged these guys out:

Fave makeup of the week: pairing up my orange eye with a red, red lip.

(Clearly I’m v. v. busy at work.)

Basically fell into a black hole of Thrice live. You start watching one video on YouTube and that just leads to the next, and the next, and the next, and there’s just so many good one out there and I just don’t know how to stop.

I should probably get that turn off the internet app.

Love Thrice’s acoustic sessions, like this one:

Yess. It’ll be a while yet before I stop crushing on Dustin Kensrue’s voice.

Realized I’m not the Nick Cave fangirl I used to be. It used to be a main priority. But a) the Nick Cave movie One More Time with Feeling was actually playing in the city where I work and I didn’t even know. b) Decided against going for no good reason really. I mean the fact that it played during working hours (14.30) isn’t really an excuse; there are plenty bands I’d skip work for. Apparently Nick is no longer one of them.

But I take comfort in the fact that I’m still able to change and haven’t stagnated. I live in dread of just having the same fave band forever. I mean imagine loving Sisters of Mercy for the rest of your life? Seems a horrible fate indeed.

That being said. I still spent the weekend watching 20,000 Days on Earth, and listening to the new record Skeleton Tree. A nice change from what I usually listen to/watch.

If you hurry, you may still manage to catch it on YouTube before anyone realizes it’s there and takes it down. It’s bound to happen.

Muralgranskaren. My reason to get up in morning. OK, maybe not quite. BUT, it has had me sniggering every single morning without fail. My fave on Twitter by far. Example:

(The local population was ready to face the Spanish killer snail. And if anyone know how to get Tweets to embed properly, do let me know! I’m completely out of ideas and tearing at my hair.)

I do need something to put me in what at least resembles a good mood. For a while. Keeps me from killing Hans-Ingvar.

This week

…been obsessively listening to Architect’s Untitled. Resorting to B-sides; this fixation of mine is bound to be over aaany day now.

Also caved and donated to Martlets Hospice, because I needed Murray MacLeod’s Gone with the Wind cover:

https://www.musicglue.com/the-xcerts/products/embed/gone-with-the-wind-architects-cover-/

And I’m sure you need it too.

I generally only donate to animal related charity, because I have issues with the human race. I believe someone called us a waste of breath, an apt description I would say. (What do you mean taken out of context??)

…I’ve accepted that I’m a person of little sleep and have been going to bed at all sorts of hours. I call it intuitive sleeping. Intuitive is pretty much the word of the year for me.

…made some of the next-to-final preparations for some going away I’ll be doing in October and November. Only a few more things to book closer to the actual dates. E.g. decide when to go back home, reservation at Café Andaluz, bus from Edinburgh airport to Glasgow. Cannot. Wait.

the platforms I ordered finally got here. Been eyeing these beauts for months and months, no idea what I was waiting for. Love me a good pair of platforms.

roobin's

And apparently they will come in handy because I just got standing tickets for Bring Me in Stockholm. FFS. I thought I was the only old person going who wanted seats. Dammit. But as long as people aren’t crawling around the stage floor I should be able to see -something- (yeh I know, I best start praying now for ppl to not be crawling around the stage floor, because that will happen).

my fave post on social media has been the playlist DanArchitects posted on Wednesday.

Guy knows how to make playlists, we’re talking 11+ hours. Dutifully listened even though I could tell from a glance that the majority of tracks – not my cup of tea. Did, however, lead to me discovering The Black Queen (not included in the playlist, found it while practicing my stalker skills, I’m trying VERY HARD to not be creepy tho, e.g. you can’t go following ppl on Spotify just because you like the music they make; if you like the music they make you follow THE BAND, OK? Yes, HI, trying to talk some sense into myself here).

Aaand, even though it’s not my cup of tea, I keep going back to listen to it. Desperate for some new input? Maybe.

…my go-to look has been bold lip + glasses. Love the NYX Cherry Skies Liquid Suede:

Severely disappointed with the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Transylvania tho. Does not apply well, dries out, and reapplying is just not advisable. And I wanted it so much. You’ll look like a dirty kid by the end of the day. And you’ll be asked for ID while buying wine despite being well over age.

How to style and wear the black dress

There is no one piece of clothing I love as much as the black dress. It’s the perfect solution to I-don’t-know-what-to-wear; there’s a black dress for any and every occasion. It’s also perfect if you want the focus to be some detail of your outfit, say a necklace, or maybe your makeup, a plain black dress will make it stand out. These are some of my black dresses and how I like to style and wear them.

Swing dress, cap sleeve

Black dress 7The black dress is perfect for traveling. This one is a jersey material that won’t wrinkle, has a little movement, and it just doesn’t get more comfortable than this. I’m wearing this for a short trip with work; I’m planning on having it last me throughout a train ride and through an early dinner. I pair all my dresses with a pair of black H&M control top tights, simply because, for me, that’s the most comfortable pair of tights, the scarf is for wearing on the train, because the trains are always cold here, the Paisley pattern choker is what I want to be the focus – both the choker and the dress are form ASOS. The dress I bought specifically to make the choker stand out. I’ve shortened the dress about 10 cm tho; it was not made for short people. Pairing it with the Converse as I suspect there will be some walking involved once we get to Helsinki. Plus, I like the contrast between the girly dress and the less girly shoe.

Swing dress, long sleeves

Black dress 6I would actually not call this a swing dress, because it has an empire waist, but let’s go with what ASOS calls it. Now this dress is the perfect length, I used it as measurement for the dress above. I try to always go for dresses with sleeves, because I just hate wearing cardigans and I’m always cold. This has been one of my favorite dress styles since pretty much forever. I love to wear this type dress with an ankle strap shoe, and keeping it simple with just a lace style choker and a red, red lipstick – obviously the focus point of this outfit. If it was the 90s I would also have worn a tiara (apparently I still have it for..nostalgic reasons..?) and a white pair of tights (because you know, Courtney Love).

Skater dress

Black dress 5A few years ago I fell madly in love with the skater dress. I have so many of these dresses, all of them from H&M. Obviously. 2 of which are this exact model, one purple and one floral (black/grey). If like me your body is quite straight, it’s a clever way of giving yourself some sort of shape. It also has a perfect neckline (straight, unless the sleeves ride up on you), and a low back – which I love. I usually wear this dress for work, pair it with a scarf, a Mackintosh necklace  and a pair of platform shoes.

T-shirt dress

Black dress 4The t-shirt dress is perfect if you want to dress down. An unlike the skater dress, hide any sort of shape. I usually wear it post-workout, if I’m going to work after workout, or just around the house as casual wear. This is actually the backside of the dress, the front is just plain black. I just love simplicity. I usually wear it with a thicker pair of tights, 100 den, and boots + my biggest pair of hoops if I wear it to work – it’s basically my interpretation of casual Friday. Of course, the rest of the uni are on a constant casual Friday, but whatever.

Bodycon dress

Black dress 3I go through phases with dresses, years ago, I bought all the bodycons I could possibly find. I’ve still got four including this one (but excluding 3 midi-dresses, same style, different length), all of them from H&M. I like to wear them in winter mostly, because to me they feel warmer. I always pair them with a scarf (this one’s from Prague) just so that there is something happening with the silhouette (+ to keep warm obvs.). Hoops and necklace is a must, another H&M find; a long necklace so that the scarf doesn’t cover it completely, and then boots of course.

Button up skater dress

Black dress 1This is another dress that I got from ASOS just recently. I like it more than I thought I would because a. the buttons are just for show, it doesn’t actually open, and b. I’m not usually a fan of the scoop neckline, but somehow this works great on me. I really love this neckline. I usually wear this dress on its own, just a choker and another of my Mackintosh necklaces of course, it doesn’t need more than that because the fit is just perfect. I’ll wear a scarf if it’s cold, and I plan to pair it with a proper pair of boots. Maybe a pair of Dr Martens? (Still undecided as to what I should get.) Because that is clearly how this dress should be worn. In the meantime I’ll keep wearing it with my Converse.

Tunic/A-line dress

Black dress 2To be honest, I don’t know what the difference between a tunic and dress is. This is sold as a tunic, but I’d probably call it an a-line dress. It is another favorite: I have one purple and one floral in addition to this one. This neckline also deserves a special mention: the front is a boat shape, and the back is a v – which I love. Good length, a little movement to the skirt, and I do love a long sleeve. Easily paired with any necklace and/or earrings, makes them stand out more; I also like to wear it with a colorful scarf like this one, which is a Primark find from a few years back, an absolute favorite. With this style dress I like to wear the platform ankle boot from H&M (feels like we all have a pair of these). This is also the perfect boot to wear if you’re going to a gig, I’ve noticed. Wore them back in May with the floral version of this dress. I highly recommend going to a metal concert in a dress with pink flowers on, you’ll feel so perfectly out of place (I don’t know why I do this on purpose but I do).

I just never regret putting on a black dress. No idea why I bother with colors and patterns sometimes. Actually, scrolling through ASOS, I think I might just get another few. For good measure.

Lots of love,
