In which I introduce a tag with a short rant

I’ve been roaming around WordPress to find new blogs to follow.

It ain’t going great.

I’m specifically looking for blogs written by people my age, because life advice from does get a bit frustrating when you’re no longer 20, and also blogs written by people with similar interests, and/or a more varied content.

Makeup is great and all, but I have other interests too.

Being even more specific…I need more blogs that rant on music related topics. Rant! I don’t want anything under the impression of being objective, no reviews or “let me tell you about this band” because BORING. I want to know about what music people consume, the how, what and when.

I would say I also need more feminist blogs. But there are too many types of feminism that I don’t agree with. Not to mention the ones I’ve stumbled on trying to explain the basics to others while trying to be not too extreme (WTF!? Be extreme or go away). Just makes me want to ram my head in the wall. VALERIE BRYSON, ANYONE?!?

I’ll just stick with the feminists I follow on other platforms. Besides, you really only need fannyarsinoe in your life and you’re covered. (YES I’M A FANGIRL, can’t help it.)

What I did find, however, is a good music tag. Next best thing surely!?

I think so. Let’s go!

(Didn’t say where this one is from, thusly no credit.)

Which bands/artist do you own the most albums by?
If we’re talking about physical albums, then Nick Cave. Yes, I kept them when I decluttered. Einstürzende Neubauten is a close second, and only because they haven’t released as many albums. They’re the nicest ones in my collection though, paper casing. Just saying.

The Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus casing tho, also not bad. A favorite track:

What was the last song you listened to?
Blood in My Mouth by Amity Affliction.

In my blog search, I also came across one blogger who complained about how Amity + In Flames (among others) had changed their sound, and not to the better, so I had to do a compare and contrast. Which is a fun little exercise I highly recommend.

Not sure why I felt compelled to, because the whole premise of the post was it is not as heavy thusly it is worse. SIGH. Yes because we all know heavy equals good. JFC.

In addition to which I don’t agree; neither Amity nor In Flames have become less heavy with each release. They sort of vary. Not that it matters! Because heavy doesn’t equal good.

Seems to me people are going to have learn to differentiate between heavy and a more chaotic sound.

Here’s what I’m thinking. There are bands that at the beginning of their career have ideas that they perhaps not quite have the skills to execute, which makes them more creative. This contributes to a more interesting and somewhat chaotic sound, sometimes mistaken for heavy/less accessible, which in turn means fewer people “get it” contributing to whoever does get it feeling that they’re just sooo cool.

It’s so boring I want to cry.

This song tho!

What’s in your CD player right now?

There’s a CD player in my car. If there is a CD in it it’s either All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us by Architects or Relief Through Release by Tura Satana.

If you have somehow managed to not listen to AOGHAU already, you really should give this one track a listen, promise you won’t regret it!

What was the last show you attended?
in June. They played C.A.N.C.E.R. Not their most accessible track I would say. You?

What was the greatest show you’ve been to?
This sort of assumes that there’s a great difference between shows. I just find that most shows I’ve been to lately, well I mean they’re carried out by competent people, you know? And I’m not overly impressed by people putting on too much of a show.

For example, if I compare the 3 Bring Me the Horizon gigs I’ve been to, I liked the first one the best, the one without all the screens and the arena-size venue. Because the setlist was better and I liked that they were lit from behind. It was a nice effect. I like simple things.

Track that fell off the setlist for the arena tour:

What was the worst show you’ve ever been to?

Erm. I could argue Being as An Ocean because I left after two songs, but I wasn’t there primarily to see Being as an Ocean so that’s a bit unfair. And the main reason for leaving was I was dead tired.

So I’m going to argue 30 Seconds to Mars mainly because:

  1. I still feel Jared is acting the part.
  2. Fine, invite people on stage, but don’t fucking spend 15 minutes picking the exact people to come up. It doesn’t make for a good show.
  3. Bringing out the acoustic guitar. Just nooooo. I’m not saying it’s bad per se, it’s just not my cup of tea.

When they started picking people out of the crowd I left because that’s just where I draw the line.

And anyway. They’d already played The Kill.

Absolutely not seeing them again. No matter how much I love The Kill.

What is the most musically involved you have ever been?
Let’s just say I haven’t been.

What show are you looking forward to?
Deaf Havana
! Brighton!

Also desperately hoping Stray from the Path will add Casey to their UK/Europe tour. It’s extremely unlikely, but my brain is all Capsize is on the bill! They played last time I saw Casey, so maybe!?!??

Yeayea, I’ve got a hangup.

What is your favorite band shirt?

Mmm. Either my Manson one or the Bring Me one.

What musician would you like to hang out with for a day?

I’m not sure I’d want that? What would we do? Go for vegan eats in Glasgow? OH I KNOW. Glasvegas’ Jonna. Because she hangs out in Glasgow. And is from Norrland. I.e. supercool.

And she plays the piano in addition to drums standing. I don’t know how you could be cooler than that?

Who is one musician or group you wish would make a comeback?

I don’t really listen a lot to any band that doesn’t exist right now. I mean there’s My Chemical Romance, but unlike the rest of the world, it’s not something I crave. Don’t get me wrong, I love them, but I don’t need them to make a comeback. There are other bands.

Also. I used to want Panik back. They’ve recently made a comeback of sorts. And. I’m not happy about it. It makes me sad.

Because. This:

I don’t understand it.

Who is one band/artist you’ve never seen live but always wanted to?

I’m going to have to say Nine Inch Nails, aren’t I?

Surely there will be a European tour eventually?

Name four or more flawless albums.

Actually flawless and in I wouldn’t skip a single song? Live Through This by Hole, Lost Forever // Lost Together by Architects and All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us by the same band and Deaf Havana’s All These Countless Nights.

Almost made the list: Relief Through Release by Tura Satana. That goddamn Nirvana cover, cannot stand it. Let the Ocean Take Me; the outro of Never Alone makes me cringe, ditto last track of Thrice’s To Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere.

How many concerts have you been to in total?
Not that many in my opinion. Can’t be bothered to count though.

Who have you seen the most live?

Architects. Five times. Which in my opinion isn’t that many. But it depends on your frame of reference I guess.

What is your favorite movie soundtrack?
Trouble Every Day by Tindersticks. It’s on this compilation:

What was your last musical ‘phase’ before you wisened up?
Before I fell into this black hole of post-hardcore type music (it’s what tells me I to listen to, OK?), I was listening to a lot of singer-songwriter type music, i.e. lots of Richard Hawley, Iain Morrisson, the National, Tindersticks, you know, nice music that doesn’t ask a lot of its listener. I still listen to it, just not as much.

What is your ‘guilty pleasure’ that you hate to admit liking?
I tend to only feel guilty about what ever I’m obsessively listening to at the time, i.e. I feel more guilty about the amount than the actual performer. Except for. I currently feel zero percent guilty that I’m listening to Amity as if there are no other bands.

Think we’ve established I do feel slightly guilty about listening to Korn though. Because they are not with the feminist agenda and I find that problematic.

I obviously tag hitherdither. Anyone else up for a rant about music? I’ll tag you!

Three songs in German to convince you German is a beautiful language

I am sick and tired of the comment German is such an ugly language.

Sick. Tired. Also it’s wrong. I mean have heard it? So crisp.

Pick another language pick on already! (And don’t say Finnish. I ♥ Finnish, also*, it’s not ugly.) I’m putting my vote on Spanish. What the hell kind of language is that?

I listen to enough German music to know that there is nothing inherent in German making it ugly. If it’s ugly, it’s because you can’t pronounce it/because you have an ugly voice.

Let’s have three examples of people who can pronounce it, and who’re just 100% pleasant to listen to.

GLORIA; Das, was passiert. Showing how German is prettier than English. If there was every any doubt. If it at all matters which is prettier.

I’m leaning towards NO.

Einstürzende Neubauten; Die Wellen. The album version might make a stronger case though, but the Blixa. Has the best German. Also the best English. What do you mean this is not a fact but rather an opinion???

This tour. It was all sorts of great.

Philipp Poisel; Erkläre mir die Liebe. Could listen to all day every day.

I could give you a hundred more examples. It’s a voice thing, not language. There are lots of people in das Deutschland with nice quality voices. Lots.

And don’t get me started on the specific characteristic sounds of the German language that I am mad obsessed with.

PS. Taste, ever heard of it? You can’t say that German is objectively an ugly language, which I would expect you to know if you work at uni doing research. Honestly.

And no, Rechnung is not an ugly word, only if pronounced by person who can’t pronounce German for shit.

YES! This rant was brought on by random professor person in lunch room all “German is such an ugly language.”

* German, means hence. Well. It could be translated as hence anyway. Although I doubt anyone would advice you to do that.

A discussion on a recent H&M purchase

Don’t you just love it that regular stores, such as H&M, stocks band tees? I recently made this little find in the men’s section:

A BMTH tee with a big fucking bird on + one Manson tee from the Smells Like Children era (♥♥♥) that I found in the men’s section when I was looking for a new hoodie (how else does one find a reasonably sized hoodie??)

Forgot all about the hoodie. Manson!? BMTH!? In regular nice-to-the-touch material?! GET IN MY CLOSET NAOW.

Despite being an overgrown fangirl, I don’t own a lot of merch. For that very reason. The quality of merch is just disappointing. Or maybe it’s not quality, but the fabric used is often unpleasant and fit horrible, no matter what size you get. (Apparently making a regular tee is an art?)

I’d be more than happy to live my life in merch if it’s a fabric that’s pleasant on the skin. Because it makes sense for me to support the groups I like in any way possible. Even if I much prefer the strategy used by Neubauten known as the Supporter Project.

Band tees at H&M, makes me happy no end. Sure, the selection of bands isn’t great. Unless you like Metallica, GN’R and/or Nirvana. …which I suppose most people do. Well, beside the point.

The point is. Why is whether or not H&M and the likes should be allowed to stock band tees a topic of discussion?

Is it because it makes life too easy?

Is the problem that little girls will be able to wear what you wear and that would somehow make you uncool by association…? Is that it?

The way I see it, it’s just one more way for your fave band to make a living. If people who don’t even like your fave band also throw money at them, well then that’s great right? Means they can keep making the music even if they don’t have the biggest audience. You should be happy?

Or or could it because it can be interpreted as false advertisement? That liking a band is a skill and only those in possession of this skill should be allowed to wear the merch? In which case, where should you draw the line? Do you have to love also their very first demo? And how do you deal with the records the band itself doesn’t like much anymore?

This is a nonsensical discussion.

Personally I’m jealous. I also want to wear merch of bands I don’t know/like. I mean I only wish I could look past the fact that however much I’ve tried I do not like Metallica. Their merch tho, not so bad looking. Mainly because that logo, it was a stroke of genius. But you could not pay me.

If H&M keeps this up I won’t have to shop elsewhere ever. Makes life simple. In short, I approve!

100 day song challenge #09

#09 A song that means a lot to you

I struggle with this prompt. What you mean!? A song that means a lot? A lot of songs means a lot to me; one reason sillier than the next.

Most of which are along the lines of this is the song that finally made me get this band. Because that is something that means a lot to me. Getting music. I take great pride in it.

But somehow it feels as if that’s just not enough. It should be something like this song saved my life. Unfortunately for me I don’t belong to the category of people who’re saved by a song.

If anything, I’m using hoardes of songs to escape reality on a daily basis, which I suppose could be phrased as saved by. If you’re that sort of person. Either way. Not entirely convinced that is a good thing. You can’t live for songs or because of songs unless you write them.

I guess another way of interpreting this is a song means a lot to you if you identify with a song.

I can’t say that I do.

I can’t solve this equation.

I could argue that the first Bring Me the Horizon song I started listening to, which at the time I refered to as the I can’t drown my demons they know how to swim song means a lot to me because it led me to discovering a genre that was mainly new to me, which in turn led to all of the trips to the UK I did last year, so it had a very real effect on my life, even if it sort of stops there. It didn’t change me in any profound way.

It’s either that or one of the German bands I listen to, because there is no doubt they are the reason I decided to learn German.

Problem with BMTH is, there’s going to be more BMTH. And there’s already been plenty.

Problem with Neubauten is there’s already been quite a bit of Neubauten.

Apparently we’re doing BMTH because I can’t find the The Garden video. This is Can you feel my heart.

100 day song challenge #89

You may have noticed I kind of love Einstürzende Neubauten. Little bit.

Listening to the absolutely lovely track Die Wellen the other day I started thinking is there no way I can include this in my challenge???

Let’s review what’s left of this challenge:

A song that means a lot. Yes that’s going to be a stretch at best.

A song that reminds you of summer. Er. No. No Neubauten song ever reminds me of any other season than fall or spring. Which is why A song that reminds you of winter is also out of the question.

A song that’s a guilty pleasure. You crazy? NO. Neubauten’s pretty much the coolest band you could possibly listen to /unbiased opinion.

A song that you need to be in a certain mood to listen to. This here song is universally good, no matter the circumstances. If you don’t hear it you need to listen to it again.

A song that’s connected to a memory. Does reading an explanation of why the song is so quiet in the beginning count? (It’s so that you’ll turn up the volume. Blixa is a clever man.)

A song with a name in the title. Noooo.

A song with the word “go” in the title. A song with the word “under” in the title. A song with the word “eye” in the title. We’re all decent readers here; obvs no.

A song with a great keyboard solo. Mm yes. I’d like to see Neubauten do that.

A song with great vocal harmonies. Well, that’s subjective, sooo…?

A song you wish you could play on an instrument. For me, that’s a no. Not this one.

A song you can’t help but sing along to. Wellll..I hate to say no. But no.

A song you used to love but now hate. How could you hate this???

A song you would choose for karaoke. Let’s not go there just yet.

A song by a band with more than 5 people in it. Blixa, N.U, Jochen, Rudolf, Alexander. That’s 5. Dammit.

A song from a musical. They did a play once I think? This one wasn’t in it though.

A song from a TV show theme. If only.

A song currently stuck in your head. Again. I wish.

A song by one of your favorite bands. Well I mean yes, but I already have plans that doesn’t include this partiuclar song.

A song. Actually, not just “A song”. THE SONG. While I love it, I’d be lying if I picked this one.

A song you had to look up the lyrics to. WELL OBVIOUSLY YES. To see if it fit this damn challenge. But I don’t really think that’s what this prompt means. (Since when I care about that? I care temporarily. At this point in time.)

A song for moving on. Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner! Bleibst du hier oder was? I’m interpreting it as a song on the topic in general. Because you either move on or remain. (In English: Are you staying here, or what? Sounds far better in German.)

Also I can stop thinking about Sarah Dawn Finer’s Moving on every time I read this prompt. Not that it’s not a catchy tune, but it’s certainly no Die Wellen.

100 day song challenge #56

#56 A song with lyrics that could read like poetry

Is it just my poor German, or would Einstürzende Neubauten’s Ich gehe jetzt actually work as poetry?

Aaand…unless you’re already a believer, by which I mean a Neubauten fan, you’re probably better off listening to the album version on Spotify. Live is probably only interesting for those of us already familiar.

Even if I would like to think the only reason Neubauten isn’t the biggest band ever is because you all just don’t know about them, that’s not likely the case.

I have a lot of questions #1

Should I give the new NIN a chance?

Should I get more shelves for my books? Options: get rid of books, or do some other sort of rearrangement?

Are there really no bands for me to see in 2017??

How do I get out of a dinner at Köttmagasinet (The Meat Storage I guess?) for the head of department next week? WHAT HOW WHY did the other vegan OK this??? Can I lie???

Why is it that ONLY when I’m running dangerously low on tampons I do bleed sans extra hormones? It stopped being funny AGES AGO.

Pea protein – WHY? Does it work with anything??? Least favorite protein powder of ALL TIME.

Travel – skip it this year and prioritize reading?

Minimalist makeup routine – HOW?? I need instructions.

Does a Twilight marathon require wine?

I’ve restarted my computer FOUR TIMES. Why is my home directory still missing??? Moreover, why can’t I save shit from Ladok if it’s missing???

How come not more bands use mailing lists? I’d love emails about when bands are going on tour or putting out a record straight into my inbox. Like Neubauten. They tell me all important things. I’ve signed up for a bunch of other bands. Fat lot of good that’s done.

Related question: how come no gig organizer EVER gets what kind of music I like? Have I ever received a single email about a show I’m actually interested in? NO. And I’ve subscribed and subscribed…

Watched the David Bowie documentary about his last 5 years in life; WHY do they insist on this docu format? A) not a documentary, B) boring people relating boring things. The interview feature, in a studio setting, it’s always a sign of a shit documentary. A L W A Y S. Hör doch damit auf! (My German, it’s so great.)

If I cast Spotify to a TV, why does it not scrobble??

Should I freshen up my hairdye already or hold off a bit longer? Say until I’m doing something?

And people say you stop asking questions as you grow older. It’s simply not true. They’re just of a different nature. And less verbal. Because you already realized ages ago no one has any answers for you; out of evil, ignorance, or plain not fucking caring.

100 day song challenge #29

#29 A song that’s very simple and repetitive but you love anyway

So here’s another category I’m not in agreement with. Why wouldn’t you love a simple repetivie song? Aren’t those the best songs??

Just thinking of this category I think about Einstürzende Neubauten. Probably because I’m forever caught up in thinking Neubauten → Negativ Nein. It was how I was introduced to Neubauten.

For the life of me I can’t remember who this wonderful person was, or why this person thought that was a good introduction. It wouldn’t be my choice, especially not post the release of Silence is Sexy, which it was.

Fortunately I have a sense of humour and was not put off by this track. The lyrics of Negativ Nein read:

sag nein
nein nein nein
negativ nein
das Leben ist nicht bunt
geballt gehen wir zugrunde
sag nein
nein nein nein
negativ nein
Drei mal nein
aber nein
nein nein nein
nein nein nein
nein nein nein
sag nein
negativ nein
Asyl / Exil
hier nich und da nich
frag mich nich ich weiss es auch nich
aber nein
nein nein nein
aber nein
Hauptsache negativ nein
negativ nein
mit einem Schrei geht es zugrunde
mit meinem Schrei
sag nein
sag negativ nein

You could question the simplicity of this. It’s not as if it’s standard format, which would be simpler in terms of performance I would imagine.

But I’m just going to go ahead and ignore that.

This isn’t my choice by the way. I’m just illustrating Neubauten’s ability to be repetitive. They frequently are, and I love it. Makes their music (well, some of it) read like mantras. Comforting.

If you want a bit of a challenge, and you’re new to Neubauten, give Negative Nein a go, and then, you can listen to this lovely little track called Wo sind meine Schuhe? (Where are my shoes?).

The progress of this band is nothing short of impressive.

I love good pop song, according to standard rules, but I friggin love this too.

100 day song challenge #32

#32 A song with a line you would tattoo on your body

In general, I feel that tattooing words on your body is a mistake. Not because it looks bad, I like the way words can look.

But sometimes, a word or a phrase loses its meaning over time.

For example: I used to do a lot of underlining in my books at one point. When I read these books now I just stare at my underlinings and I have no idea why I’ve underlined. The words just don’t have the same meaning to me anymore.

If I’d get tattooed, I’d get flowers for sure. Long time love. And I’d get them tattoed on the inside of my arms so that it’d feel as if I had a lining. You know, like the lining of a coat?

Not going to cheat on this category and go changing it again tho.

I’d get Ich wart am falschen Pol tattooed, from the Einstürzende Neubauten song Stella Maris.

Reading challenge; A book about a road trip

blixa bargeld

When it comes to Blixa Bargeld’s Europa kreuzweise I lack all sorts of judgement.

This could have been my pick for the A book that’s guaranteed to bring you joy category; I’ve read it before, I liked it before. Obviously. But since I’ve already selected and read a book for the cateogry, the road trip category will do nicely.

I’d like to think I’m not biased; I don’t like all things Neubauten do. Their latest release for one thing, it just wasn’t my cup of tea. Couldn’t even pull through a total of 5 minutes of a recording of the live show. But that’s more of an exception to the rule I suppose.

It is likely my fan status colors my read of this book.

This is a peculiar little book; like Nick Cave’s Sick Bag Song that I’ve previously mentioned, it doesn’t quite follow the rules.

Essentially, this is Blixa Bargeld describing Einstürzende Neubauten’s 2007 European tour for the Alles Wieder Offen album. This is my fave record of theirs. I saw them on this tour too, in Glasgow, obviously. It was where I lived in 2007. What I’m getting at is; books about events that have somehow been a part of your life are probably more likely to appeal to you. Another reason I might not be seeing things clearly. But since when is seeing things clearly any kind of fun?

Moving on!

While the story, if that’s what you want to call it, is told in chronological order, with the occasional flashback, it’s more like series of observations relating to travel, restaurants, hotels, shows. It feels as if the book is more aimed towards conveying a feeling, as opposed to telling a story.

I’m assuming this is why Bargeld includes the setlist, the same setlist every night (maaaybe…? To be honest I only noted that it was a playlist, I didn’t read each of them through with any kind of care.)

I did mention in another post how I disliked the inclusion of lyrics in this very book. I take it back! This time around, I quite like it. Maybe it’s because I haven’t been listening to Neubauten that regularly lately; it’s nice with a bit of a reminder of one of many reasons I like this band. Also, it is one of my favorite pieces of lyrics. Of all the lyrics, not just Neubauten. (Clearly, I have a whole lot faves…)

Ich warte.jpg

Bargeld’s use of words always did appeal to me. Likewise his choice of subject. There’s often a feeling of waiting, emptiness, pointlessness, time standing still, observation and no judgement. Or at least that’s my interpretation. I have no interest in being objective here so there’s no use telling me I’m wrong. Let’s just do one more favorite, a quote:

Ich bin ein Forschungsreisender ohne Auftrag, Fachgebiet und Reiseziel. //  I’m an explorer without mission, speciality and destination.

I also love his dry sense of humour. Like this part where he’s trying to call the front desk of the hotel .

He is one bitter old man and I find it funny.

This book is somewhere between poetry and fiction. In fact, I’d go so far as to say it has more in common with poetry than fiction.

I love this little book, if you ever stumble on it you could well give it a read. It’ll take a couple of hours tops; even if your German is shaky.
