Current face; A review

I’ve settled into a makeup routine and can’t be bothered to try much in the way of new. It goes something like this:

Base

No7 airbrush away pore minimising primer. Smells a bit weird, but def pore minimising!

NYX dark circle concealer. I’ve got a No7 under-eye product as well which is way better. Probably because it targets my specific age group. Just trying to use the NYX one up. It’s alright.

Urban Decay eyeshadow primer potion for old people. It’s. It’s too good. If I leave it to set, which I like to do, it makes blending really difficult. I’ll go for a cheaper one next time.

Lumene matte control oil-free foundation. I can stand for a lot of shit as long as it’s the right shade. Lumene is always a good fit for me in terms of shade. Not that this is shit. But it’s not great. Considering it’s matte control oil-free, I’d expect it to not have melting issues, which it does. I seem to remember liking their blur foundation better?

GOSH prime n’ set powder. This stuff is brilliant! A keeper for sure. The only thing keeping me from throwing the Lumene foundation out the window.

NYX setting spray. I use this to keep cheek product in place. It does that just fine.

Cheeks

NYX high definition blush Taupe + Coraline. Taupe under the cheekbone, Coraline on the apple. Taupe is the best shade blush ever. I’d forsake all of my other blushes for it, hands down.

Makeup Revolution highlighter from the Chocolate Vice palette. I used to think it was wicked. It either wasn’t or something’s happened to it. Not that it matters, I’ve got the Sleek Solstice palette, only highlighter you need in your life.

Eyes

I’ve finally settled on eyebrows; they’re just not for me. I was going back and forth, sometimes drawing them on, sometimes not. Last time, I just hated the brows so much I wiped them off before the end of the day. Despite not having any base products to repair the damage of wiping them off (I was at work). I’m not saying stop doing your eyebrows, it’s just I feel more like myself without. That’s all.

I’ve even cut my brows to make them appear more sparse.

Eyeshadow though! One simply cannot wear too much eyeshadow.

My goal is always to look even more hollow of eye. One of the many perks of growing old; it just becomes easier!

I start by creating a barely visible halo around the edge of the main eyeshadow, often using one of the orange shades in the NYX palette Color Riot.

I love pairing the orange with green. I recently bought a trio of green shadows from H&M, their high impact shadows; they were on sale for 10 SEK/piece, irresistable price! Especially since these are without a doubt some of my favorite shadows; the color payoff does not disappoint.

I use Stayin’ Olive all over the lid, add Everglades to the outer corners and finish off by contouring the eye with some Mesmerize Me, which is so dark green it’s practically black.

With this combination, if you don’t blend properly, you end up looking like a dirty child.

I’m not going to lie. It happens.

Inner corners: an ancient mono shadow from Makeup Revolution called BASE! Another favorite. May it last forever.

And then just finish off the eyes with some mascara, Natural Collection waterproof on top of a NYX lash primer.

Opened a fresh tube of my regular H&M mascara a couple of weeks ago, it promptly proceeded to make my eyes weep and weep and weep sooooo..in desperate need of a new cruelty-free mascara for sensitive eyes. Wish me luck!

As for eyeliner. I should wear just a wee bit. I really should. It’s just if I start putting it on I’ll never stop. So never mind that.

Lips

NYX Lingerie in Corset. Not that I don’t like my bold lips anymore. It’s just…I can’t be bothered to take my makeup off when I go to the gym (work ⇒ straight to gym), and I’m OK with wearing makeup to the gym, but a bold lip would just feel all sorts of wrong.

Generally leaves me looking something like this:

All and all. No improvement in this area of my life. The list is not getting any shorter.

EIGHT. Top 5 movies

I’m not big on movies, but these are some of the movies I’ve watched repeatedly:

  1. Pride & Prejudice. Yes the Keira Knightley version. LOVE it.tumblr_mfgsuk84aj1rca6fpo1_400
  2. 10 Things I hate about you. Requires no further explanation.giphy
  3. One Day. Because I love an unhappy ending. Bonus points for Edinburgh.one day.gif
  4. Catching Fire. It just speaks to me more than any of the other parts of the story. Could be because of Jenna and her ax. Or just Jenna, ax or no ax.tumblr_mwqylpifiv1rdz3y0o7_250
  5. Becoming Jane. Because Austen?tumblr_mw42zdhcgy1sgz6hmo1_250

NINE. 5 things you’ve learned this year

  1. To not wash my hair. Every. Single. Day.
  2. To not straighten my hair. Every. Single. Day.
  3. There are other places in the UK you could well visit. Even if nothing is quite like Glasgow.
  4. Intuitive can and should be added to; sleep, food, workout, reading.
  5. I’ve wasted YEARS not using colored eyeshadow. I ♥ colored eyeshadow.

Let’s also throw a What I wish I would learn already in there: WHEN eyes are just weeping, weeping, weeping, as they sometimes do, don’t even try to put eye makeup on. Just let it go. And remember to stare less at screens. JFC.

TEN. Makeup of the day

Or at least makeup of a day.

You know how I love my oranges. This is, as of Friday, officially my go-to look; mix some of the orange shades I have in my possession, no eyeliner, H&M Maximalist mascara, the rest sort of varies, but this day I went with brows (pomade + shadow) and the IsaDora lip pen in Bohemian, and NYX taupe blush.

Most of the week was just a struggle on account of too much language reviewing making my eyes just weep off whatever I put on. FUN.

ELEVEN. Weekend highlights

On a Tuesday…? You know what, I’m going to save this one for next weekend when I’m actually doing something, other than what I usually do. Don’t get me wrong, I love my weekends, but there aren’t exactly anything going on that could be described as highlights.

TWELVE. Top 5 beauty products

I’m going to focus on makeup, because…well I love makeup don’t I?

  1. H&M mono eyeshadows. Dirt cheap, excellent color range, and pigmentation is ace, what more can you ask for?
  2. H&M mascara. New fave is the Maximalist mascara. Gives you a messy look and it works for people with sensitive eyes.
  3. Sleek highlighter quad Solstice. I love my Makeup Revolution highlighters, but this, well it’s just better still, innit?
  4. NYX Liquid Suede in Cherry Skies. Which always leads me to think of And the sky was cherry black. Anyone else? No?
  5. Makeup Store black/brown mono shadow I’ve had much, much longer than you should keep makeup. It’s brilliant as eyeliner sub tho. Sure it’ll last me a lifetime.

THIRTEEN. Places you want to travel

glasgowalphabetmaprosemarycunninghampress

  1. Glasgow.

I’ll stretch as far as places that present no difficulty traveling to and where bands play that I want to see. But mostly, I just want to go to Glasgow. Oh I’ll explain this to you. Eventually. And when I do, I’m sure you’ll agree that there’s really no point in going anywhere else ever. Promise.

FOURTEEN. Tips for a new blogger

Oh who am I and what do I know really? But I guess the following are a few tips:

  1. Try to write as if you’re writing to someone. If you can have a specific someone in mind, all the better. (Keep having to remind myself of this.)
  2. Don’t change the standard layout too much unless you’re really good at web design. You’ll just end up with a mess of a layout, all cluttered and not reader-friendly. You don’t need that.
  3. Don’t center the text of your posts. We don’t do that because it decreases readability.
  4. Purely selfish tip: don’t focus on one thing only. (I prefer blogs with a mixed content.)
  5. Write/blog because you think the act in itself is FUN, not because you feel you owe it to someone (your readers, z.B.). If you’re struggling to find the time it means you’ve got other priorities and that’s OK too.
  6. Don’t update as often as I do. It’s fun for no one (except yourself).

The unpacking of the suitcase

final1472585949701.jpg

Basically. I bought quite a few bits in the UK. I’m thinking too many to go through it all.

My favorite bits:

Revolution Radiant lights highlighter; MUA mono shadow in Chestnut – it’s the ashy brown matte I’ve been looking for for years; NYX blush in Taupe – had no idea how much I needed this; Natural Collections mascara – actually got three different ones, tried one, not bad, just gotta remember to keep your eyes slightly squinted until it dries; NYX Liquid Suede in Cherry Skies. LOVE this red.

Cat headband, cat purse and the fattest supercat eyeliner. Love the liner! It applies easier and quicker than all of my previous ones. And yes; I am a crazy cat lady in the making. The fact that I don’t have a cat doesn’t stop me. Clearly. Also got PJs with cat print from Primark – it’s a tradition, you go to the UK and you get a pair of silly PJs from Primark, every single time.

Picked up a few books at Foyles; I’ve already finished Before I Die, quite surprised to find that I liked this novel quite a lot. I sort of miss not reading it.

And can we also talk about this:

final1472587238708.jpg

Is it just me or does this just not work? I could barely go 2 days without washing hair using this. Unless I’m imagining things?

As for the clothes, I’ve worn the dress with the floral print; it’s from Urban Outfitters and the fit took some getting used to but I am in love with the print and the color. Very excited to see how I get on with the shirt; haven’t even owned one for years. Was really looking for a flannel, black bottom with white, preferably from the men’s section. Dunno if my search skills are not up to par or if I was looking in all the wrong places. If anyone knows where I could find one, do let me know!

August wish list; beauty edition

shopping list boots superdrug

I have many bad habits. One of which is getting most of my makeup and beauty products from Superdrug and Boots. Not because it’s a bad thing to get your makeup and beauty products from a drugstore, heavens no! I’m a big supporter of budget beauty in general; the reason is simply there is no Superdrug and no Boots where I live. They’re in a different country altogether. So kinda inconvenient.

Not sure how this happened, it’s not as if we don’t have drugstores in Sweden. It’s not as if there is no good makeup in all of Sweden. I’m sure there is. At least there is some at H&M?

Maybe it’s just the old the more difficult to obtain, the greater the appeal.

Either way, THANK GOD I’m going to the UK this month; I’m running low on many of my essentials. God; a.k.a. sister, because she suggested this trip.

On my Superdrug wish list:

Makeup Revolution. I’ve had a single MUR eyeshadow for ages that is my all-time fave brown shade: Dirty Cash, and since their Radiance highlighter palette is just all sorts of brilliant, I want to get a few more bits.

makeup revolution mattes— Flawless matte ultra eyeshadows. Need a good matte eyeshadow palette; this one seems to cover your basic needs.

— Highlighter. A highlighter to just throw in my bag, as of yet undecided which, I’m open to suggestions.

Sleek. Sleek alongside GOSH have been my two favorite brands at Superdrug since forever. Fortunately they’re both cruelty-free, i.e. I can keep buying their products. This time, I’ve only got 2 Sleek products on my list, which leaves room for some spontaneous purchases. On my list:

— Ink pot + Sunset palette. Heard such good things about the ink pot, and the Sleek palettes; I just love the lot of them. The Sunset one is on the top of the list, but I may well get one more.

And a single product from GOSH:

2819877

Fudge. Loved the Frizz Smoother I got back in May, so I’m getting a back-up.

2016-08-01 Fudge frizz

COLAB dry shampoo. Lily Melrose has been raving about their dry shampoo, and being easily swayed, I need to try it out.

colab_dry_shampoo_london_200ml_1411661848

Superdrug‘s own brand. Some basics:

— Cleansing Facial Wipes for combination skin. Best wipes I’ve tried yet! And I’ve tried a few, none compare. Also the only way I’ll get my makeup off at night, because I’m just that lazy. I know wipes are bad for you, but so is sleeping in your makeup.

— Facial wash – same applies here, nothing compares. I’ve been using the Body Shop Foaming Cleanser and its OK; the Superdrug one just works better with my skin.

— Hand cream. There is not enough talk about hand creams. Since trying to buy cruelty-free only, I’m still looking for a hand cream that will last through one wash and is not greasy. I’ve used the red version of this in the past, while it’s not at all bad (for not being Eucerin), the smell isn’t great, is it?

— Shower gel. Erm. It’s hardly a necessity, I just really like the scents available. I think I can treat myself to a shower gel.

On my Boots wish list:

NYX. Yes there’s NYX at H&M these days, but hardly the selection available at Boots.

— Liquid Suede in Alien. I thought I was done with black lipstick, but I must have been staring at Manson too much lately, I need this black lipstick. This is is at the very top of my wish list.

— Lip cream in Transylvania. Just when I decide I need this shade it’s all sold out , hoping I’ll find it in the UK.

— Eye primer. My Lumene primer has been disappoint of late, I need to try something different.

— Setting spray. I need a back-up.

Natural collection. I keep hearing good things about the mascara, and I did try to get it back in May when I was in Brighton, but there were none. So I’m hoping I’ll find it this time.

natural-collection-mascara

No7. Now this brand feels like it caters to my age group (old people, obvs). These are some of my faves I’ll be repurchasing:

Soap & Glory. Obviously getting the Supercat eyeliner; this time the fat version. Because who am I kidding, I like it thick.

A quick look using the MUR Chocolate Vice

I am a deeply impatient person. Max attention span on one task: 30 minutes. MAX. I generally want any given task to take a little less time than that. The task of putting on makeup especially.

So I thought, during this staycation of mine, I’d use the matte brown shades in the Makeup Revolution Chocolate Vice palette to create a quick everyday look.

What also helps reduce time is that I’ve gone off using concealer (because I feel this is a good look, and my hormones are currently behaving), and I’ve long since stopped curling my lashes and decided eyebrow gel is just overkill. Where I struggle is not using 10 different shades of shadow – not because using many different shades is bad, but because simplicity is a goal.

This here is the palette I’m working with:

final1469455436076

I start by applying my usual base, a No7 primer + Lumene eye primer, followed by the No7 Beautifully matte foundation in cool vanilla. Still so in love with this foundation; it works amazingly well with my combination skin, keeps me matte all day, easy. Don’t even need powder. I add some radiance, using the Makeup Revolution Radiance.

Set it all with the NYX setting spray.

nyx finishing spray

Put on my brows, currently enjoying the lighter shade in the IsaDora palette which make my thin eyebrows look more natural, i.e. like their patchy selves. On to the eye shadows!

I start off using this medium brown shade; I know some people like to put a lighter shade underneath. I’m not one of them. There is no such thing as too dark in my world, so there is literally no point adding a lighter shadow underneath, that would just make my life more difficult. I apply the shadow all over my lid + into the crease. This is the shade I’m using:

final1469471890502

Next, I add a darker shade to contour the eye; it goes into the crease and under my lower lash line. I use a clean angled slightly fluffy brush to blend it all. I want no sharp edges anywhere. This is the shade I’m using:

final1469471698836

Next, I want to add a lighter color in the inner corners. I usually use whatever shade is more white, but this time I’m opting for a shade leaning more towards peach, the middle one here:

final1469454783720

I just dab it on using my fingers. This was a master move; to me, this is what makes this a fun everyday look that I would consider repeating. I also want just a bit more shadow around the edges, so to avoid looking like a raccoon, I choose a lighter brown shade and apply it around the edges. This is the shade:

final1469472367315

Wee bit of the H&M pure definition mascara on that and the eyes are done.

For the lips I’m trying out the NYX lip primer; their bullet lipsticks clearly require some primer and it turns out it works perfectly. Keeps the lipstick (a matte in the shade Minx) well in place and enhances the color. I.e. does exactly what it should. Unlike say the E.l.f. ditto. (I’m sorry E.l.f.! I want to love you but you’re making it so damned difficult.)

final1469611531069

Finished look:

Verdict: Quick and easy, love the finish of these shades. Sis would definitely approve; sane everyday look accomplished.
