July

There are no post I like to write as much as the end-of-month summaries/favorites. Also fave thing to read. (Except for feminist rants, there’s nothing quite like feminist rants.) If it was up to me, it’d be mandatory. Especially the this is the culture I’ve consumed this month part.

This is what I’ve been up to in July.

Listened to

In This Moment! Especially loved this cover of In the Air Tonight, been listening to on repeat repeat repeat, even if the album Ritual as a whole is well worth a listen.

How is Being as an Ocean’s Black & Blue not on Spotify??

One of these days, I’ll learn to love more than their singles. I hope.

I have been listening to Korn a fair bit, but 2 minutes of Fieldy’s biography put a dampener on my obsession. Good news: no longer have any urge what so ever to see this band play. N E V E R going to happen.

Am, however, sulking about having no plans in place to see Architects + Amity Affliction in Hungary on 15 August. I need more Amity in my life.

This remix of Linkin Park’s One More Light:

Should have been the original.

And oh, fave track off of the new Lana del Rey release has got to be 13 Beaches.

Slightly disappointed I’m not really in the mood for Lana because I want to love this record. But I don’t.

Penntricket! You know the feminist pod in Swedish which it makes absolutely no sense what so ever to write about in English? That one. Best episode since the one about hating men; an episode entirely on menstruation! Just missing one thing that they never mentioned: menstruation is a kinda nifty indication of your health. Clue read my mind and did a post on it here. Penntricket talked about menstruation as a life force—Clue compares it to having a pulse, which is closer to the mark I feel. Your menstruation can tell you a lot about your general health, which isn’t mentioned nearly enough. No instead we focus on weight as a measure of health. SIGH.

Watched

Friends from College. Netflix thought I might like it. Netflix was WRONG. Don’t waste your time on it. Really. Don’t.

One More Time with Feeling. There’s a little extra thing on the DVD about boredom where Nick Cave slags off Metallica and assures us it’s OK to be bored. It’s funny.

To the Bone. It’s on Netflix, about a girl with anorexia. I quite liked it. Ending was a bit weird tho.

If I was going to recommend you one short little video to watch from this month, I’d say give this one a watch:

It’s just nice to have someone, anyone at all, say that it’s OK to not do things sometimes. That it doesn’t mean you’re missing out on life, it just means you have other interests and/or priorities.

Vegan things

I started following Peta on Twitter. That would be another reason why I’m a bad vegan; I have not been following Peta.

It’s an excellent reminder if you ever feel you’re starting to lose track of why you’re vegan to begin with. It’s also, frequently, incredibly hard to have them in your feed. They like to be graphic. Multiple posts showing the maltreatment if animals every. single. day.

I used say I’d probably not be vegan for the rest of my life when asked, because I’ve been around long enough to know I change my mind a lot. But if you’d ask me right now the answer is YES. VEGAN. ALWAYS.

Coconut oil. I just remembered just how brilliant coconut oil is. Favorite uses: pancakes + popcorn. Oh the pancakes and popcorn wasted using other fats…

K*ckl*ng. Astrid & Aporna! I hate it when food brands do some vegan products and not all, it’s nonsensical and annoying. Astrid & Aporna is not one of them, they do all vegan. I’m currently loving the fake meat which they excel at, and k*ckl*ng is brilliant for a spicy coconut milk type sauce. Texture is so, so nice.

technically, water is vegan. So let’s stick it in this category; I’ve been loving elder flower water an awful lot. Unfortunately not good for the environment, but hey ho

Changes

Finally found the Twitter setting where you can turn off retweets. Finally! Means I can follow certain people (a.k.a. bitter old men, who are my age, by w/e) who seem to have a need to retweet their entire feed. I appreciate that you’re enthusiastic and all, but, kinda want to be able to see my own feed too, you know?

Still looking for a way to get other people’s likes out of my feed. It’s nice to see it every one in a while, but all of them? All the time? Please no?

It’s not looking good though. (Dear Twitter, HOW IS THIS EVEN A DEFAULT SETTING???) Think I might have found a setting which hides my own likes though? Just because I figure if it annoys me, it might annoy others. I might be a person who clicks the like button too frequently on Twitter. Possibly.

Changed blog layout. As one should every now and again, if for no other reason then so that you don’t forget how to.

Layout of my phone. Because I had to reset it. Because it kept insisting I had no space despite deleting apps + transferring data to my SD card like a crazy person and. it. was not. helping. Also, this comes with the perk of being forced to update all passwords. Supposedly good for you.

Also to be noted: I think it’s Spotify that’s taking up all the space. It says it’s saving to my SD card. But I’ve no reason to believe it. I.e., next phone will not a Sony. It lies to me.

Tried the ACO CC cream. It’s been a while since I tried a new makeup product, which is why this gets a special mention. That and I was quite excited. Not only because it’s been a while, but because the CC cream says it’s a day cream, primer and foundation all rolled into one. Sounds great no!?

I tried it for 2 reasons:

  1. I was out of day cream and wanted to try something new because I can’t quite decide what my skin is like at the moment. This one isn’t for a specific skin type, so that appealed to me.
  2. My current combination of products does not fare well in the heat so I just wanted something else.

It doesn’t exactly do everything it promises. And as far as CC creams go, I’ve had better. But it does work well enough as a replacement for day cream + primer, which reduces my routine by one step so I guess it could be worse.

Monthly menstrual report

I feel like the most regular person ever!?!

final1500448580857.jpg

If this keeps up, I will have to learn how to use a menstrual cup. (Please no? I’m old, I can’t be learning new things.)

Next month

Definitely not seeing Korn. Nor Amity or Architects.

Am getting my apartment photographed. Selling prep. Still don’t want to think about moving. I also need to prepare a list of all updates I’ve done since moving in, for tax reasons. Such fun!

I’m also going to start working for a research center. Should appreciate and look forward to. But I don’t.

Keep hoping someone will get me out of it.

Goodbye to June

June was an excellent month in terms of music.

A. I learned to love Korn

I had decided long ago Korn was not a band for me. Because whyyy would anyone bother with Korn when you could be listening to Tura Satana?

And if you know your music history you can quickly deduce that this was a decision I made in the late 90s.

However. Their latest releases are so my taste. I mean Black is the Soul; I can’t not like it. And if there is something I love is learning to like a band I’ve previously…not been to keen on. Put mildly.

Question is. Is it worth while seeing Korn live at this point in time? Or is it just too late?

B. New releases

In This Moment’s Roots. Insanely catchy track. Also in love with the Oh Lord video. It’s the perfect blend of Lady Gaga and Marilyn Manson.

Pvris; What’s Wrong. This song alone is reason enough for me to brave Fryshuset in November. Really. Though I still hesitate. Because Stockholm. It is not a place I love visiting. Even less so since having been to Malmö for the first time. Why can’t all bands just play there? Not least because so far, pretty much all venues in Sweden seem to be better than Fryshuset. Fryshuset can’t even get the sound anywhere near acceptable.

C. (Re)discovering old releases

Deaf Havana’s Anemophobia. Both the first part on the Fools and Worthless Liars album, and this second part which isn’t on Spotify (I think?).

Crystal Castles’ I’m not in love. Found it on an old mixed CD I keep in the car. It’s still brilliant. As I’m sure you know.

I basically want all songs to feature Robert Smith and be this sad.

David Bowie’s I’m deranged from the Lost Highway soundtrack. Has to be my favorite Bowie track. (Popular opinion, yes?)

D. Architects

Played in Malmö and as you might imagine, it was brilliant. Might just have been the best one so far. Even if it was on the sweaty side (tho not as sweaty/lacking oxygen as Thrice at the Forum last year).

Malmo was excellent thank you @edmasonphoto

D. Deaf Havana booked a UK tour

And I’m apparently going to the Brighton show. I mean probably. I’ve got a ticket, I just haven’t made any travel arrangements. Or checked if I can have time off. I’ve got a creeping suspicion we might have something booked at work.

Not that -that- would necessarily stop me. I have no work ethics.

Reading was also not bad, mainly because of

Bitterfittan 2 by Maria Sveland

It is decidedly one of the great feminist novels. Oh yes, it’s a fact, not at all a matter of opinion.

Gawd I love being so friggin old I don’t even care if nobody agrees with me. Not that I cared before, I was just more likely to be influenced by the opinions of others, whereas now, if you tell me this is not a good book/not feminist, I’m just going to think you’re wrong.

Most reviewers have basically hated this book.

What a lot of bores.

This is how I know it’s summer: I start wearing activewear to work. I.e., it is now summer in Sweden.

This makes sense. Wearing the activewear I mean. I can go straight from work to workout without changing. Which I feel comfortable with because working at uni, there’s pretty much no one working in the summer. Or at least they’re not at the office. Except for me. Because I’m admin and use my holidays for going to shows that are not in summer.

That being said.

Leggings. It is a gift from the gods. I can’t be bothered with clothes that restrict movement. Cannot! Just give me a pair of leggings and a loose top. It’s all I want to wear, ever.

Although. I do realize that it is at times inappropriate. Unfortunate that. I would prefer being oblivious. Being oblivious is so underrated.

A few things were less than brilliant.

My period has suddenly decided it’s going to be regular. WHY HAS THIS EVIL BEFALLEN ME I AM TOO OLD ETC.

On the one hand, it’s great, no extra hormones for me (..might also mean I’m healthier than I have been, but what’s the fun in that?), on the other, my period is evil.

Regular period means more opportunities for it to turn up uninvited. And it likes to do that.

Period: Travel you say!? I shall come along for the ride.
Me: NOoooooOO.

Which leads me to….

I love Clue and all, but it can’t predict my periods for shit.

Me: Yup, that’ll be another 7 days then.
Clue: 25 days to go!
Me: WHY am I giving you ALL THIS INFO and all you give me is a goddamn average number??? Might as well be using a calculator! Are you seriously telling me you can’t see the signs!? Because I fucking can.
Clue: *remains clueless*
Me: *rolls eyes*

We’re currently not in agreement.

And one correction.

I dyed my hair. As mentioned last month. Aaand. It’s not going to be the last time. Forgot how much I love this color, even if it stains all that isn’t black.

Guess it just means I need more black things in my life.

Next month

I’ll just be waiting for August and vacation.

100 day song challenge #7

#7 A song that gets you pumped up

I don’t know about you, but for me, what gets me pumped up tends to vary with current taste and mood.

Usually In Flames does it for me. Or Within Temptation. In This Moment’s Whore. Emilie Autumn’s Fight Like a Girl.

But right now, I’m listening back to all of these and I’m just thinking noooo, this does nothing for me.

So we’re going to have to go with a Bring Me the Horizon song. Had I not already mentioned Throne in at least one (possibly more) posts that’d be the one. But since I most definitely have mentioned it, let’s go with True Friends. Which! I feel is appropriate because when they played in Stockholm last time, people were even more into this track than Throne. So right and so wrong all at the same time.

I friggin love this version of the song. The pauses creating more drama. Just ♥♥♥.  V.v. excited to see them play again.

Sunday 7

This is my second week of vacation and I’m already feeling as if there isn’t enough time to just not work. Four weeks of vacay (well, OK, I moved the last two days because I need to go to the UK to see a band, but it’s practically four weeks) – not nearly enough. So stressing about that. Because I make sense, in general.

Spent the weekend with these guys:

I.e., at my aunt’s, feeding her cats while she and her family were out of town. So now I’m dreaming of a house of my own + couple of cats.

This week’s soundtrack: In This Moment. On Monday I decided enough is enough, I cannot be listening to the Carry the Fire playlist for another week. It’s not fair to the other songs. I picked out my favorite In This Moment tracks (The Promise, Blood, Scarlet, Adrenalize, Burn, Whore, The Blood Legion, Beautiful Tragedy), a few All Ends (Still Believe, Wasting Life, Close My Eyes), my current fave Annisokay track (Wolves in the Walls), a track by Enter Shikari I can’t get out of my head (Torn Apart), two tracks off of The Downward Spiral (Ruiner + Eraser), Manson‘s Devour, Bondi St Blues by The Amity Affliction and allowed myself a single track from the Carry the Fire album (Back to Back) – and that’s what I’ve been playing on a loop all week. Or at least until I was informed by the Internet in general that the Dustin Kensrue track I’ve been loving and still haven’t quite let go of (It’s Not Enough) is in fact on Spotify under the name The Modern Post. My research skills; clearly not up to par.

spotify

I’ve been blending tea like a crazy person. Currently unable to pick a single tea to drink, I keep blending two or more teas. Pinch of the green lemon + ginger, pinch of black apricot, or pinch of Needwood + Chai special – you get the idea. In addition to which I’m having tea like there is no tomorrow. This has to stop.

Mustard. Mustard is my other food addiction. I’ll have it on a slice of Finn Crisp, with avocado, with tomatoes, on a rice cake, cucumber on top, on brussel sprouts (cover sprouts in mustard, roast in oven), in dressing with beans – there is no meal I will not have something with mustard on. It’s ridiculous, but I’m not aware of any negative effects in terms of health, unlike too much tea, so I’m not worried about it. I’m sure I’ll get bored with it eventually.

senap

Me and Spotify have not been getting along this week. I keep searching for Spotify issues because it currently takes about 5 minutes (minimum!) for Spotify to start running on my phone. It sometimes just freezes, and the other day, it also managed to crash my phone. I’m not happy. And I just recently reinstalled Spotify because of the issues previously mentioned. I need someone to tell why it behaves this way; I tried the turning it on and off again, didn’t work, now what?

Much of the week was spent researching binge eating. Stumbled on Josie Mai on YouTube, well worth a watch if you’re interested in the topic. Or if you’re interested in health and fitness.

How was your week?
