Current face; A review

I’ve settled into a makeup routine and can’t be bothered to try much in the way of new. It goes something like this:

Base

No7 airbrush away pore minimising primer. Smells a bit weird, but def pore minimising!

NYX dark circle concealer. I’ve got a No7 under-eye product as well which is way better. Probably because it targets my specific age group. Just trying to use the NYX one up. It’s alright.

Urban Decay eyeshadow primer potion for old people. It’s. It’s too good. If I leave it to set, which I like to do, it makes blending really difficult. I’ll go for a cheaper one next time.

Lumene matte control oil-free foundation. I can stand for a lot of shit as long as it’s the right shade. Lumene is always a good fit for me in terms of shade. Not that this is shit. But it’s not great. Considering it’s matte control oil-free, I’d expect it to not have melting issues, which it does. I seem to remember liking their blur foundation better?

GOSH prime n’ set powder. This stuff is brilliant! A keeper for sure. The only thing keeping me from throwing the Lumene foundation out the window.

NYX setting spray. I use this to keep cheek product in place. It does that just fine.

Cheeks

NYX high definition blush Taupe + Coraline. Taupe under the cheekbone, Coraline on the apple. Taupe is the best shade blush ever. I’d forsake all of my other blushes for it, hands down.

Makeup Revolution highlighter from the Chocolate Vice palette. I used to think it was wicked. It either wasn’t or something’s happened to it. Not that it matters, I’ve got the Sleek Solstice palette, only highlighter you need in your life.

Eyes

I’ve finally settled on eyebrows; they’re just not for me. I was going back and forth, sometimes drawing them on, sometimes not. Last time, I just hated the brows so much I wiped them off before the end of the day. Despite not having any base products to repair the damage of wiping them off (I was at work). I’m not saying stop doing your eyebrows, it’s just I feel more like myself without. That’s all.

I’ve even cut my brows to make them appear more sparse.

Eyeshadow though! One simply cannot wear too much eyeshadow.

My goal is always to look even more hollow of eye. One of the many perks of growing old; it just becomes easier!

I start by creating a barely visible halo around the edge of the main eyeshadow, often using one of the orange shades in the NYX palette Color Riot.

I love pairing the orange with green. I recently bought a trio of green shadows from H&M, their high impact shadows; they were on sale for 10 SEK/piece, irresistable price! Especially since these are without a doubt some of my favorite shadows; the color payoff does not disappoint.

I use Stayin’ Olive all over the lid, add Everglades to the outer corners and finish off by contouring the eye with some Mesmerize Me, which is so dark green it’s practically black.

With this combination, if you don’t blend properly, you end up looking like a dirty child.

I’m not going to lie. It happens.

Inner corners: an ancient mono shadow from Makeup Revolution called BASE! Another favorite. May it last forever.

And then just finish off the eyes with some mascara, Natural Collection waterproof on top of a NYX lash primer.

Opened a fresh tube of my regular H&M mascara a couple of weeks ago, it promptly proceeded to make my eyes weep and weep and weep sooooo..in desperate need of a new cruelty-free mascara for sensitive eyes. Wish me luck!

As for eyeliner. I should wear just a wee bit. I really should. It’s just if I start putting it on I’ll never stop. So never mind that.

Lips

NYX Lingerie in Corset. Not that I don’t like my bold lips anymore. It’s just…I can’t be bothered to take my makeup off when I go to the gym (work ⇒ straight to gym), and I’m OK with wearing makeup to the gym, but a bold lip would just feel all sorts of wrong.

Generally leaves me looking something like this:

All and all. No improvement in this area of my life. The list is not getting any shorter.

I ❤ Glasgow

Because I can buy bits like

Nakd bars from Holland & Barrett’s for cheap + decent chai from random supermarket; you have no idea how I’ve been looking for a decent chai all over Sweden – impossible. This Tesco one tho; does the job perfectly. Nothing fancy, everyday chai ♥♥♥.

…I’m going to have start ordering the Nakd bars from online. It’s so perfect for traveling, and let’s face it, this could replace other types sweets easy peasy.

Makeup + beauty from Superdrug and Boots.

I’m obsessed with Superdrug’s cleansing wipes for combination skin, which is a problem. I need to find good wipes I can get from somewhere in this country.

The Boots’ tea tree & witch hazel facial wash is a new find; they were all out of Superdrug’s facial wash for combination skin, again, but this facial wash! It’s better still. My skin tends to be a bit uneven, and I’ve come to accept it as a fact. But this facial wash, I swear it evens out my skin. And the Soap & Glory shower gel; ach, I just wish I hadn’t packed so much I could have gotten a normal-sized bottle. It brags you don’t need lotion afterwards and I truly believe it.

Also got a new GOSH primer because my current one (No7) is a bit meh; my foundation brush finally broke down so I’m trying out the Real Techniques sponge, so far loving it, and if the Beautyblender is better still than this one, I get why people are so obsessed with it; new No7 foundation, a radiance one this time because I heard such good things about it. With any luck it’ll manage to make me look just a little bit sicker still.

Cute things from Primark; PJs, pink knit, metallic chokers, MTV sweatshirt, and of course, big, chunky, pink knit + fuzzy socks.

That’s appropriate night time wear for a 35-year-old I dare say. Should also be noted: bought the pink knit in the biggest size I could find, i.e. about 4-5 sizes bigger than what I usually wear, this doesn’t mean it’s long enough to be worn as a dress, as I discovered on the bus to work…

Trashy hoodie + lots of earrings from Top Shop.

I am in love with this trashy trend, did the same trick as with the pink knit. Sis says it’s also too short to be worn as a dress. I’m disagreeing, wore it as dress to the BMTH gig, maybe I will again? As in, I’m seeing them again on Saturday. Stockholm this time.

Also love that dark metal color the majority of the studs are in. Top Shop seems to be under the impression it’s dark gold. Okeeyy.. in my mind they’re a bit too much on the red side to be described as gold, but w/e.

More Mackintosh souvenirs.

Ah yes, museum gift shops in Glasgow, they just draw me in.

Backpack from Urban Outfitters.

final1479296031649

Because the carry on I brought was just so tiny, I literally had to get a new bag to get all my things home (this here, just a sample, there was more stuff). But also, I needed a bigger backpack in my life, so quite pleased with this purchase.

Note to self: go on shopping diet.

If I could only use six makeup items

This is an idea that I’ve stolen from Rhian Westbury. Simply because I think it is an excellent exercise of the mind.

I often feel this is getting out of hand. I have too many products and a routine that is not as quick as I would like.

But somehow, I seem to be adding products rather than the other way around. To my routine and to my collection. I don’t want to be a collector. Clearly doesn’t stop me though. Impulse control? I don’t do that.

Not that my collection is HUGE, it really isn’t. It’s just bigger than I would like.

But then, in my own defense, I do use the absolute majority of the products I have; I never repeat a look two days in a row, and I do try out at least 2 new looks every week. Often more than that. Not that this is an excuse.

I really need a routine that takes little time, while still making me look at least in the vicinity of a crazy person. Makeup = attempt to keep most people at arms length at the very least. Something I am quite interested in.

But if forced, 6 products could get you a long way.

My 6

final1473590373253.jpg

Eye primer. You do need an eye primer, that’s all there’s to it. I discovered the eye primer quite late in life, I’d been struggling with creased shadow for ages felt like. The eye primer was an epiphany indeed. I never go without.

final1473591062225

No7 matte foundation. Let’s face it; I’m old. I need a product to even out the color in my face. Well OK, not need, but I just feel that it’s more fun to work with a blank canvas.

final1473591114241

Gosh primer/setting powder. Honestly. Can we talk about this –amazing– powder? This has been a true game-changer for me. My previous powders, they haven’t been bad. But this stuff, it keeps any foundation in place FOR 12 HOURS. That’s a long time. No need to top up. Seeing how I’m a person of combination skin, I LOVE this stuff..

final1473590503704

No7 waterproof mascara. Because eyeshadow without mascara just looks weird. And I need my eyeshadow.

final1473590948381

MUA eyeshadow in Chestnut. Because it goes with all colors (I match makeup and what I wear, obvs), perfect for the hollow-of-eye-look, which is my go-to look, AND it can be used on brows too, if need be. Then again, eyebrows is apparently the one thing I could do without. As recently as this morning I just couldn’t be bothered and went to work sans brows. I don’t hate it at all.

final1473590764214

GOSH blush. Because I have no angles to my face, I need something to not look like a big piece of Mozarella. I remain unconvinced by contouring. Mostly just ends with me looking like a dirty child.

What I feel worst about giving up: bright shadow for inner corner or eye. Addicted! But then, there’s no point to it if you don’t have a darker shadow on the lid. Sooo…

Sort of missing a lip product, but I figure you could probably fake some color with blush and/or eyeshadow, OR, probably most likely, have the lips melt into your face and just go with the never-failing Gerard Way in Helena type look.

What would you choose?

August wish list; beauty edition

I have many bad habits. One of which is getting most of my makeup and beauty products from Superdrug and Boots. Not because it’s a bad thing to get your makeup and beauty products from a drugstore, heavens no! I’m a big supporter of budget beauty in general; the reason is simply there is no Superdrug and no Boots where I live. They’re in a different country altogether. So kinda inconvenient.

Not sure how this happened, it’s not as if we don’t have drugstores in Sweden. It’s not as if there is no good makeup in all of Sweden. I’m sure there is. At least there is some at H&M?

Maybe it’s just the old the more difficult to obtain, the greater the appeal.

Either way, THANK GOD I’m going to the UK this month; I’m running low on many of my essentials. God; a.k.a. sister, because she suggested this trip.

On my Superdrug wish list:

Makeup Revolution. I’ve had a single MUR eyeshadow for ages that is my all-time fave brown shade: Dirty Cash, and since their Radiance highlighter palette is just all sorts of brilliant, I want to get a few more bits.

makeup revolution mattes— Flawless matte ultra eyeshadows. Need a good matte eyeshadow palette; this one seems to cover your basic needs.

— Highlighter. A highlighter to just throw in my bag, as of yet undecided which, I’m open to suggestions.

Sleek. Sleek alongside GOSH have been my two favorite brands at Superdrug since forever. Fortunately they’re both cruelty-free, i.e. I can keep buying their products. This time, I’ve only got 2 Sleek products on my list, which leaves room for some spontaneous purchases. On my list:

— Ink pot + Sunset palette. Heard such good things about the ink pot, and the Sleek palettes; I just love the lot of them. The Sunset one is on the top of the list, but I may well get one more.

And a single product from GOSH:

2819877

Fudge. Loved the Frizz Smoother I got back in May, so I’m getting a back-up.

2016-08-01 Fudge frizz

COLAB dry shampoo. Lily Melrose has been raving about their dry shampoo, and being easily swayed, I need to try it out.

colab_dry_shampoo_london_200ml_1411661848

Superdrug‘s own brand. Some basics:

— Cleansing Facial Wipes for combination skin. Best wipes I’ve tried yet! And I’ve tried a few, none compare. Also the only way I’ll get my makeup off at night, because I’m just that lazy. I know wipes are bad for you, but so is sleeping in your makeup.

— Facial wash – same applies here, nothing compares. I’ve been using the Body Shop Foaming Cleanser and its OK; the Superdrug one just works better with my skin.

— Hand cream. There is not enough talk about hand creams. Since trying to buy cruelty-free only, I’m still looking for a hand cream that will last through one wash and is not greasy. I’ve used the red version of this in the past, while it’s not at all bad (for not being Eucerin), the smell isn’t great, is it?

— Shower gel. Erm. It’s hardly a necessity, I just really like the scents available. I think I can treat myself to a shower gel.

On my Boots wish list:

NYX. Yes there’s NYX at H&M these days, but hardly the selection available at Boots.

— Liquid Suede in Alien. I thought I was done with black lipstick, but I must have been staring at Manson too much lately, I need this black lipstick. This is is at the very top of my wish list.

— Lip cream in Transylvania. Just when I decide I need this shade it’s all sold out , hoping I’ll find it in the UK.

— Eye primer. My Lumene primer has been disappoint of late, I need to try something different.

— Setting spray. I need a back-up.

Natural collection. I keep hearing good things about the mascara, and I did try to get it back in May when I was in Brighton, but there were none. So I’m hoping I’ll find it this time.

natural-collection-mascara

No7. Now this brand feels like it caters to my age group (old people, obvs). These are some of my faves I’ll be repurchasing:

Soap & Glory. Obviously getting the Supercat eyeliner; this time the fat version. Because who am I kidding, I like it thick.

Weekend face; Wild Sable

I’ve been out of love with my purple and red shadows lately. But this weekend I woke up longing for some Wild Sable. And why wouldn’t you? Why do we keep resorting to browns and neutrals when we could be using colors that bring out the color of our eyes?

1466802319600.jpg

Base
GOSH illuminating primer
Lumene longwear blur foundation (applied using hands, ganz wichtig! because I wanted a lighter coverage)
BareMinerals mineral veil (just a dash for good measure)
Makeup Revolution highlighter palette Radiance
NYX matte finish setting spray

Eyes
Lumene eye shadow primer
H&M Wild Sable eyeshadow
GOSH eyeshadow palette To enjoy in New York (top row, middle shade, current favorite)
Makeup Store darkest brown shade in existence (it might have a name?)
NYX doll eye mascara
IsaDora perfect brow

I basically packed on the Wild Sable, a dash of the GOSH shadow in the inner corner + brow bone (might have been a bit generous in my application of the Wild Sable and used the GOSH shadow to blend some edges) and a tiny bit of the Makeup Store shadow along the lash lines (top + bottom).

Steps skipped: concealer, blush, eyeliner, 10 different shades of shadow. Makes quite a difference in terms of time; and who doesn’t love a simplified routine?

Not that I was going anywhere. I just wanted to put some makeup on.
