In which I overuse THE HORROR

I don’t always read gig reviews, but when I do, I make sure you know about it.

Not that’s it’s a conscious choice; there usually aren’t any gig reviews I’d be interested in reading. That, or I’m just terrible at finding them.

However. Pinterest is sometimes helpful.

HELLO. Review of the Amity Affliction/Northlane/Stray from the Path/Wage War gig in Glasgow in 2016? I saw them when the tour made a stop in Stockholm, let’s see what Scotland made of it, clickety-click!

Aaaand..it’s a let down. Apparently, the purpose of the review is to demonstrate what a man the writer is.

Like when he comments on the general appearance of Northlane. Singer especially.

[T]heir vocalist Marcus Bridge still looks like Booky Wook author Russell Brand and their music, sadly, is still too niche for me to become an avid fan.

Interpretation: Marcus is too pretty, it will attract the girls. THE HORROR. Metal logic dictates liked by the girls > not heavy enough > if you do like it DON’T ADMIT TO IT. It will make you look like less of a man. That writer guy doesn’t understand why Northlane, third on the bill, gets the biggest audience reaction thus far, is hardly surprising. If you consider what the writer aims to do, failure to understand Northlane’s greatness is expected, but if you’re into the metal made these days, it’s entirely confusing.

As for their music is too niche, isn’t that like saying I only like music that appeals to a great mass of people? Oooorrrrr…? I don’t know why anyone would say that.

And don’t even get me started on the fact that it’s not as if you’d confuse Marcus and Russell Brand.

However. I’m not opposed to reviewing the appearance of the band. I think it would benefit gender equality. Women in music are already heavily judged by appearance, why should men in metal bands be any exception?

Specifically. I DO want a review of Wage War’s appearance and style.

I am serious. I need something to work with! The music isn’t doing it for me.

As in, I might, at one point, have been looking for something to throw at them. Not necessarily because they were bad. They just weren’t any fun. Not quite worth sacrificing my NYX Liquid Suede for though.

There’s this interview I keep thinking of. Guy in metal band complained people in bands weren’t allowed to be non-pretty anymore. WHAT BANDS ARE YOU EVEN TALKING ABOUT??? Kennt nicht! To me, they all look more or less like Wage War. Pretty or any synonym of the word isn’t exactly appropriate as description, is it?

And besides. What you choose to wear always sends a message. Clothes communicate. You can try and pretend it doesn’t all you want, changes nothing. May as well talk about it. Wage War; clearly not trying to challenge the prevailing world order. But then, this is metal and it’s a very conservative genre, as pointed out by Simon Reynolds and Joy Press in The Sex Revolts decades ago. Which, by the way, you really should give a read if you haven’t already.

Especially if you feel the urge to write things like this:

When The Amity Affliction finally take to the stage just before 9pm there’s a notable change in the atmosphere. … it was more a case of screaming ladies taking over the noise department and for a second I wondered if I’d been teleported to a gig hosted by the anti-christ himself, Justin Bieber.

Oh no. The few girls in attendance made their presence known. THE HORROR. Clearly, we don’t belong at metal gigs, as it needs to be commented on. Clearly, we should stick with Justin Bieber—and I’m assuming he is the antichrist because girls like him. That which girls like=evil.

Meanwhile.

Slightly surprised these guys get away with not a word about appearance. But then he’s already established they’re the girls’ faves, followed up with a final comment on how this gig was the least sweaty and bruised he’d ever been at a gig, therefore he would be unlikely to go again, i.e. Amity Affliction failed to make him feel like a man, which is obviously was this poor bloke uses metal for.

Thank you Stockholm. 📷 @xpeesx #tcbhworldtour

I’m also confused as to why this is included:

Whilst both [Amity Affliction and Northlane] are considered metal they do have differences in their styles which I will do my best to explain.

Yesss. That’s what we need the review to do, explain the difference between Amity and Northlane. Not as if we could find that out for ourselves by, say, using Spotify? And also, why are Wage War and Stray excluded? I mean they’re all different types of metal. No explanation there??

There never is an explanation though. Unless you count labeling Northlane too niche as an explanation, or the writer’s personal opinion that Amity’s mix of melodic and heavy, well, doesn’t actually mix.

As if there is a contradiction between melodic and metal.

I suppose melodic makes for an easy listen, whereas heavy does not. Melodic music for women, heavy music for men, and thusly don’t mix? That is the reasoning behind it, right?

Obviously the idea that there’s a contradiction is simply inaccurate. Heavy + melodic = BEST MIX /fact.

…even if how to measure the level of heaviness certainly can be discussed. Anyone invent a heavyometer lately? No?

It is clear already from the start that Mr Reviewer Guy prefers the first two bands on the bill, Wage War and Stray from the Path.

Bolstering this tour are two mighty bands from the United States.

(Does my incorrect use of block quotes bother anyone? No?! What about these brackets!?)

This use of mighty. I just don’t approve. Moving on

Despite not being the headliner, SFTP take the title for best band that evening in my opinion.

What’s with the despite? Pretty sure it’s allowed to prefer an opening act to the headliner. Even if the reason is because they don’t make you worry you’ re compromising your manliness.

That being said, despite not being a Stay fan, they do put on a good show. I would repurchase, even if they’re not exactly in my playlist. (Tho the new single is v. v. catchy).

Also. I DO want to talk about is this look:

Berlin tonight

A post shared by Stray From The Path (@strayfromthepath) on

Well that or, the short speech Mr Singer Guy did in Stockholm; he pointed out that the show was for everyone and don’t fucking harass the girls, and if you see someone doing that let them know that’s not OK. (I’m paraphrasing, he said something to that effect, my brain was all Hey! That’s vaguely feminist! put him in the feminist compartment and moved on with its life. My criteria for the feminist label for men in metal are extremely low.)

OK then. I think I’ve demonstrated why gig reviews probably aren’t something I should be reading, even if I’m able to find them. Throws me straight into rant mode it does.

Not that I hate rant mode. Just don’t think other people are that wild about it.

In which I introduce a tag with a short rant

I’ve been roaming around WordPress to find new blogs to follow.

It ain’t going great.

I’m specifically looking for blogs written by people my age, because life advice from 20-somethings..it does get a bit frustrating when you’re no longer 20, and also blogs written by people with similar interests, and/or a more varied content.

Makeup is great and all, but I have other interests too.

Being even more specific…I need more blogs that rant on music related topics. Rant! I don’t want anything under the impression of being objective, no reviews or “let me tell you about this band” because BORING. I want to know about what music people consume, the how, what and when.

I would say I also need more feminist blogs. But there are too many types of feminism that I don’t agree with. Not to mention the ones I’ve stumbled on trying to explain the basics to others while trying to be not too extreme (WTF!? Be extreme or go away). Just makes me want to ram my head in the wall. VALERIE BRYSON, ANYONE?!?

Yes.

I’ll just stick with the feminists I follow on other platforms. Besides, you really only need fannyarsinoe in your life and you’re covered. (YES I’M A FANGIRL, can’t help it.)

What I did find, however, is a good music tag. Next best thing surely!?

I think so. Let’s go!

(Didn’t say where this one is from, thusly no credit.)

Which bands/artist do you own the most albums by?
If we’re talking about physical albums, then Nick Cave. Yes, I kept them when I decluttered. Einstürzende Neubauten is a close second, and only because they haven’t released as many albums. They’re the nicest ones in my collection though, paper casing. Just saying.

The Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus casing tho, also not bad. A favorite track:

What was the last song you listened to?
Blood in My Mouth by Amity Affliction.

In my blog search, I also came across one blogger who complained about how Amity + In Flames (among others) had changed their sound, and not to the better, so I had to do a compare and contrast. Which is a fun little exercise I highly recommend.

Not sure why I felt compelled to, because the whole premise of the post was it is not as heavy thusly it is worse. SIGH. Yes because we all know heavy equals good. JFC.

In addition to which I don’t agree; neither Amity nor In Flames have become less heavy with each release. They sort of vary. Not that it matters! Because heavy doesn’t equal good.

Seems to me people are going to have learn to differentiate between heavy and a more chaotic sound.

Here’s what I’m thinking. There are bands that at the beginning of their career have ideas that they perhaps not quite have the skills to execute, which makes them more creative. This contributes to a more interesting and somewhat chaotic sound, sometimes mistaken for heavy/less accessible, which in turn means fewer people “get it” contributing to whoever does get it feeling that they’re just sooo cool.

It’s so boring I want to cry.

This song tho!

What’s in your CD player right now?

There’s a CD player in my car. If there is a CD in it it’s either All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us by Architects or Relief Through Release by Tura Satana.

If you have somehow managed to not listen to AOGHAU already, you really should give this one track a listen, promise you won’t regret it!

What was the last show you attended?
Architects
in June. They played C.A.N.C.E.R. Not their most accessible track I would say. You?

What was the greatest show you’ve been to?
This sort of assumes that there’s a great difference between shows. I just find that most shows I’ve been to lately, well I mean they’re carried out by competent people, you know? And I’m not overly impressed by people putting on too much of a show.

For example, if I compare the 3 Bring Me the Horizon gigs I’ve been to, I liked the first one the best, the one without all the screens and the arena-size venue. Because the setlist was better and I liked that they were lit from behind. It was a nice effect. I like simple things.

Track that fell off the setlist for the arena tour:

What was the worst show you’ve ever been to?

Erm. I could argue Being as An Ocean because I left after two songs, but I wasn’t there primarily to see Being as an Ocean so that’s a bit unfair. And the main reason for leaving was I was dead tired.

So I’m going to argue 30 Seconds to Mars mainly because:

  1. I still feel Jared is acting the part.
  2. Fine, invite people on stage, but don’t fucking spend 15 minutes picking the exact people to come up. It doesn’t make for a good show.
  3. Bringing out the acoustic guitar. Just nooooo. I’m not saying it’s bad per se, it’s just not my cup of tea.

When they started picking people out of the crowd I left because that’s just where I draw the line.

And anyway. They’d already played The Kill.

Absolutely not seeing them again. No matter how much I love The Kill.

What is the most musically involved you have ever been?
Let’s just say I haven’t been.

What show are you looking forward to?
Deaf Havana
! Brighton!

Also desperately hoping Stray from the Path will add Casey to their UK/Europe tour. It’s extremely unlikely, but my brain is all Capsize is on the bill! They played last time I saw Casey, so maybe!?!??

Yeayea, I’ve got a hangup.

What is your favorite band shirt?

Mmm. Either my Manson one or the Bring Me one.

What musician would you like to hang out with for a day?

I’m not sure I’d want that? What would we do? Go for vegan eats in Glasgow? OH I KNOW. Glasvegas’ Jonna. Because she hangs out in Glasgow. And is from Norrland. I.e. supercool.

And she plays the piano in addition to drums standing. I don’t know how you could be cooler than that?

Who is one musician or group you wish would make a comeback?

I don’t really listen a lot to any band that doesn’t exist right now. I mean there’s My Chemical Romance, but unlike the rest of the world, it’s not something I crave. Don’t get me wrong, I love them, but I don’t need them to make a comeback. There are other bands.

Also. I used to want Panik back. They’ve recently made a comeback of sorts. And. I’m not happy about it. It makes me sad.

Because. This:

I don’t understand it.

Who is one band/artist you’ve never seen live but always wanted to?

I’m going to have to say Nine Inch Nails, aren’t I?

Surely there will be a European tour eventually?

Name four or more flawless albums.

Actually flawless and in I wouldn’t skip a single song? Live Through This by Hole, Lost Forever // Lost Together by Architects and All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us by the same band and Deaf Havana’s All These Countless Nights.

Almost made the list: Relief Through Release by Tura Satana. That goddamn Nirvana cover, cannot stand it. Let the Ocean Take Me; the outro of Never Alone makes me cringe, ditto last track of Thrice’s To Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere.

How many concerts have you been to in total?
Not that many in my opinion. Can’t be bothered to count though.

Who have you seen the most live?

Architects. Five times. Which in my opinion isn’t that many. But it depends on your frame of reference I guess.

What is your favorite movie soundtrack?
Trouble Every Day by Tindersticks. It’s on this compilation:

What was your last musical ‘phase’ before you wisened up?
Before I fell into this black hole of post-hardcore type music (it’s what last.fm tells me I to listen to, OK?), I was listening to a lot of singer-songwriter type music, i.e. lots of Richard Hawley, Iain Morrisson, the National, Tindersticks, you know, nice music that doesn’t ask a lot of its listener. I still listen to it, just not as much.

What is your ‘guilty pleasure’ that you hate to admit liking?
I tend to only feel guilty about what ever I’m obsessively listening to at the time, i.e. I feel more guilty about the amount than the actual performer. Except for. I currently feel zero percent guilty that I’m listening to Amity as if there are no other bands.

Think we’ve established I do feel slightly guilty about listening to Korn though. Because they are not with the feminist agenda and I find that problematic.

I obviously tag hitherdither. Anyone else up for a rant about music? I’ll tag you!

The struggles of an introvert

When you are a social retard and spend most of your time trying to work your life so that you’ll have as few IRL encounters with people as humanly possible, as any social situation always and without fail will make you feel, well, retarded, going to a gig is not a straight-forward process.

It has to be carefully researched, to make sure that it will be worthwhile braving crowds of people. You can’t just go because you like the band.

Heavens no.

Currently trying to figure out if I can/should/want to see Korn. Listening habits suggest attendance is mandatory:

There is no such thing as too much Korn

…but a number of other factors also need to be considered.

Can I have time off work? This includes would I call in sick for this band? Because I’m in the habit of making all arrangements and then asking for time off.

The times I’ve not gone on account of being unable to have time off are v. v. few.

I missed out on Amity Affliction in Gothenburg last year because work was making me go to Finland on a goddamn boat. But then they played a second date in Sweden later the same year, which I’ve mentioned going to here. So I can’t actually complain.

As for Korn, conveniently enough, they’re in Sweden during my summer holidays. So I already have time off. Perfect?

Where are they even playing? Now this is frequently where I find an excuse not to go. I strongly dislike most venues/cities.

This works in two ways; is it important enough for me to see this band live that I’m willing to overlook the poor choice of venue in addition to being in close proximity to people?

But sometimes, only somtimes, the venue itself is a reason to go. We’re talking about the classics. For example. If Korn were playing Barrowland Ballroom (in Glasgow obvs.), I’d have to go. (Where they did play this tour: SSE Hydro in Glasgow. Which was before I developed this obsession, i.e. was never an option.)

Where are they playing in August? Grönalund in Stockholm. Yea, that’s an amusement park. Venues don’t really get any worse than that. And, as I might have mentioned before, once, twice, fifty eleven times, I’m not a fan of Stockholm.

Bonus: you can’t get tickets in advance. If you want to go, get there early early early, stand in line as if it’s 1992. Not sure it’s something I do? I want to argue I’m too old, but if so, I was –always– too old for that.

Cost cost cost? This isn’t such a big deal, because when you travel to see the band the ticket is usually a minor cost. However, stupid choice of venue + 800 SEK ticket, that’s a NO in the majority of cases. Nick Cave + the Globe + 800 SEK tickets = No. For example.

The one thing that is good about Korn playing Grönalund: you only pay admission to the park. I.e. practically for free.

Worth noting: Elton John recently played Grönan. Chaos ensued, people complained about not being able to get in. Oh gee, what a surprise, who could have seen that coming???

I’ve no idea if Korn are as popular as Elton John in Sweden. I want to say no, because the heavy type of music doesn’t seem to be particularly popular in Sweden right now. But WHO KNOWS? It’s not as if they play anything even similar on the radio, which could have been some sort of indication.

What are they even playing? I like to check setlists. Some people like the surprise; I like to know that this particular setup of men are secure enough in themselves to not feel forced to be old-school and demonstrate that they’re much heavier than their latest release. As if there’s an equal sign between heavy and good. I’m not saying the opposite is true either. Just play what you’ve just created, ‘s all. Maybe with a few hits thrown in for good measure, that should do it.

In the case of Korn. At most, 4 songs from their latest release (depends if they’re doing festival or regular show setlist). None from The Paradigm Shift. I’m not surprised, just not happy about it.

As a whole, I find their current setlist confusing. But then I don’t fall into the true fan category. Nor the I’m going for the nostalgia category. I fall into the HI I’m new here category. And they’re clearly targeting the first two categories. Newbies need not bother, that’s what the setlist reads like.

I don’t understand this strategy at all. All, and I mean all, bands I’ve been watching lately play their new material for the main part. Way more than 4 measly songs. I guess Korn didn’t get the memo?

What are the gigs like? For obvious reasons, I will also watch clips or entire shows on YouTube. This is to avoid singers that make for a painful live experience (Manson), too metal (In Flames), put on too much of a show (In This Moment)—I’m not saying it’s bad, it’s just personal preference. Which is why there are quite a few bands I love but would never go see live. (…even if I have seen 2 of the 3 mentioned. But I won’t do it again! Probably.)

Now Korn. Not exactly intriguied. But also not annoyed. It is quite possible I would like it. I see potential. Not sure that’s enough of a reason though.

Deaf Havana, which I’ve just booked, was by comparison a far easier decision for the following reasons:

Brighton + Concorde 2! Sure, would have preferred Glasgow, but far better than Stockholm.
Reason to take time off from work in November!
Tickets under £20! In my opinion, basically a steal. I’ll have to buy some merch just to make sure they won’t starve.
Setlist: full of All These Countless Nights!

Do I need more reasons?

How about this one: I predict that by the end of the year All These Countless Nights will be on my best records of the year list.

Deaf Havana All These Countless Nights

One tiny but: just who the hell goes to the UK in November? Flight providers have pretty much decided no one; trying to find ways to get there and back required some assembly.

As for Korn, I’m going to have to realize it’s not meant to be. It’s too late.

Can we just talk about Sliding for a second?

You know my favorite Roddy Hart & the Lonesome Fire? They’ve released a new video for the v. v. brilliant track Sliding.

I feel cheated.

It could be Glasgow porn and all we get is Roddy’s eye?

I don’t get it.

Am I upset just because I always expect Glasgow from any band from Glasgow, or is it just not very good? I can’t tell.

Fave part: the final scene with the stairs. Because that is Glasgow. The Lighthouse to be exact. As if anyone beside myself cares at all. I need to kick this Glasgow obsession.

Alright then, will now stop typing Glasgow.

Liebster Award #3 .Well. Sorta.

Lise has nominated me for the Liebster Award #3. Thanks love!

I have confession tho. This award business makes me feel…kinda old. I don’t really get it. I get the whole it’s a way to acknowledge blogs you like/follow, and I’m all for that. But it’s like, anything blog-related I don’t recognize from LiveJournal days, it’s just mystery to me.

Did I mention I’m old?

I just find myself asking questions. What do you mean award, who wins!? It doesn’t look like anyone wins, that can’t be right?? What happens if you don’t follow the rules, are you disqualified?? Why do you have to nominate SO MANY people?? What happens when a person is nominated repeatedly?? Who’s in charge of this ship???

Sometimes I wonder if this award business was created by a non-native speaker, not quite familiar with the definition of award. Or maybe someone who just didn’t care? (In which case, congratuwelldone!) Or maybe I’ve just proof-read one too many texts where you can never be too sure that the word used is actually the word that they mean…

I’ve gathered that no one is forcing you to do anything.

It’s my ship and I can do whatever the hell I like.

So here’s what I’m going to do:

I’m going to answer the questions because HELLO free prompts and I like typing + it’s possible this isn’t the busiest day at work ever.

If you had the opportunity to go to one place in the world and stay there forever, where would you go?

So here’s the thing. I’m madly in love with Glasgow. Might have mentioned it before. Once. Or twice. …a few more times…

glasgow outside GSOA
Glasgow. Scott street I think?

To me, it’s the perfect size city, you can walk just about everywhere, and there are some nice places to walk. By the river, parks, the cemetery, just around the city. It’s nice.

Also. All bands play in Glasgow. ALL. + Glasgow audience = the best one.

The selection of vegan places is brilliant. Brilliant! Even if it really only needs Stereo.

I also like the UK in general because being vegan in the UK is easier. It’s also easier to be an alcoholic. Which, I’m kinda undecided whether it’s better or not. I mean I like cheap drinks.

Ginger tea at the Willow Tea Rooms. I just. It’s something that just hits me sometimes. I just love me some ginger at the Willow. I think about it at random.

Museums are free! And there’s a few to go to. I miss having visit to the museum as a weekend activity.

It’s less cold than Sweden, though not hot. Which suits me perfectly. Sure it rains a lot, but do you get blizzards? You do not.

I love Glaswegian. I really do. I might not understand it quite as well as I’d like to, but that’s a minor problem.

There are a few things though. If I was staying forever, what would I be doing for a living? Because I lived outside of Glasgow. And I clearly moved back to Sweden because, as suspected, the job I had was not a keeper. I also suspect that there are few jobs in the UK that offer as much freedom as I currently have. I.e., there’s no dress code, hours are flexible, I have 31 days of paid vacation (35 when I turn 40), I can take time off pretty much any time at all, unions are strong, getting fired is quite difficult, they keep asking you what tasks you want (??), they basically don’t tell you what to do ever. Also, we don’t sell anything. I like it that the organization I work for isn’t trying to rip people off.

But if a decent place to live is provided for, and I don’t have to deal with the admin of life that’s so difficult to understand even in your own language and the country you were born in, then Glasgow.

If not, here is not bad.

What was your childhood dream?

I don’t think I had one? If we’re talking something beyond the My Little Pony castle? Which could be one reason why I seem to be lacking goal and direction in life.

What would be your “ride or die” make up?

Right now, this feels like a v. v. difficult question because I was just thinking about how I’m not overly impressed with the majority of products I’m currently using.

The ones I wouldn’t trade:

Concealer: No7 Instant Radiance Glow concealer
Powder: GOSH prime n’ set
Blush: NYX high definition blush in taupe. Equally important: Real Techniques sculpting brush for application.
Highlighter: Sleek’s Solstice palette.
Eyeshadow: If I could have just one, then H&M’s Sahara Dawn. But if choosing an entire palette, then the MUR Chocolate Vice, bottom row pink shades; current faves. Plus, I can actually bring this palette only when I travel; it has highlight that isn’t crap, the pinks can be used as blush, and there are colors that could be used as eyeliner if in a pinch. It’s got you covered!  makeup revolution chocolate vice
Lipstick: NYX Lip Lingerie in Corset. Perfect pale lip shade in my opinion. Also, necessary reapplication throughout the day; minimal.

I saw someone include perfume, can I include perfume? In that case, Body Shop’s Red Musk. Gawd I loves it.

Types of products I need, but not necessarily the exact one I am using:

Primer: GOSH anti-wrinkle. It is possible it’s gone bad, but it’s currently not doing exactly what I want it to. It’s starting to behave like Body Shop’s wonderblur primer. Didn’t like that one.
Foundation: Lumene matte foundation. Apparently, in the summer, it has some melting issues. Other than that we’ve gotten along fine.
Mascara: H&M Faux-To-Go. Oh I dunno…just seems there should be mascaras with better definition and more volume.
Eyeshadow primer: Urban Decay primer potion. Am I the only one who thinks this primer makes blending a struggle??
Setting spray: NYX matte finish. If my setting spray was better, then maybe my foundation wouldn’t melt? Or is that just wishful thinking?

I don’t need an eyebrow product, but to switch it up sometimes and actually wear brows, some pomade.

If you had your own make up line, what would it be called and which products would you include in it?

I’d team up with H&M, because not even in my dreams am I interested in anything but budget friendly, and it’d be called Antichrist. (Made to create looks inspired by Manson during the Antichrist Superstar area, obviously.)

It’d be a tiny line consisting of:

1 palette including both cheek products and eyeshadows (paper packaging, no mirror, perfect for travel). Colors: dark, red, plum, yellow, pink, slightly metallic finish (except for the yellow, it’d have to be matte), a highlighter that’s a dupe for the Makeup Revolution mono eyeshadow Base, and a taupe blush (matte obvs).

Mascara blacker than deep black (I’m sure it can be done), for sensitive eyes, making your lashes look like spider legs (maybe that would require falsies..? Oh what do I know about makeup really!)

An eyebrow kit consisting of concealer, tiny scissors and tweezers.

Liquid lipsticks in three sickly shades. E.g. pale cool neutral, taupe type shade, darker brown/purple type shade. Matte of course.

What kind of job do you have? Are you happy with it?

I have an office job. There are parts of it I like and there are parts I don’t like. I don’t like that I sometimes have to talk to arrogant students, and ditto uni staff. And sometimes I’m sent texts to proof that just make me want to die (strongly suspecting they’re google translations, trying to save texts like that, it’s mission impossible, desperation sets in and thusly a wish for death).

Bottom line: there are many worse jobs one could have. Not thrilled but not entirely hating it?

Is there anything you would have done differently about your blog if you had the chance to go back to the beginning?

Well no? If I regret something I could just delete it? I just regret that I didn’t start sooner.

What is your favorite season of the year and why?

Autumn! The light is good, colors are nice, it’s not too hot and not too cold.

glasgow university
Autumn. Mmm.

What is your favorite tv series?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer!

..not quite on topic. But any excuse for this video…

Is there anyone who inspires you? Who and in what way?

I think we’ve established 90s Manson is my main makeup inspo. Very tangible inspiration.

Other than that.

Fanny Åström, Lady Dahmer and Maria Sveland inspire me with hope, and make me feel less bad about my angry bitter self. Not that I wouldn’t be without them, they’just make me feel less bad about it. As if I’m using a strategy on purpose.

It’s quite difficult to think of people who inspire you to actually do something. I’m mostly stuck in the admire stage.

Is there a flavor you just can’t stand?

Lavender. Lavender should not be in things you eat, it just shouldn’t.

Also floral teas. Who wants to drink flowers??

Oh, and orange flavored chocolate. Best stop now, this list might become v. v. long.

If your blog had a business card, what would your tagline say?

Here’s the thing; my blog would never have a business card because my blog is not interested in any type business. That, and it’s highly unmarketable.

Which is fortunate because taglines, JFC I sorely lack tagline skills.

Rather than tagging 11 people (because who would I tag?? I know not), I want to give you 11 topics I would love someone (anyone else thinking about Anberlin right now? No?) to write a post about:

  1. Your top 3 bands of all time; tell me all about it! And I mean all.
  2. 3 flawless albums; list and explain!
  3. Which feminist book do you want forced on everyone and why?
  4. Actually, I want to repeat Lise’s question What kind of job do you have? Do you like it? Title of post should obvs read either I fucking love my job, or I need to quit you babe.
  5. Top 3 gigs you’ve been to! (What!? I like lists and I’ve got a short attention span soooo…)
  6. Tell me about the most horrible diet you’ve ever been on!
  7. Menstrual story!?! Anything! First period, something related to your period, are you on board with the menstrual cups, ever bleed through anything, contraception because of bad periods—anything! Doesn’t have to be long. Mandatory soundtrack while writing: Into the Menstrual Night I Go.
  8. Tell me about something you think is greatly underrated!
  9. Explain your most recent playlist!
  10. A feminist analysis of [insert book/song/band/genre/WHATEVER here].
  11. A comprehensive list of all feminists you should be following on social media. Because obvious important.

Should a person be allowed to put together posts this level of messy?

Probably not.

10 things that need to get the fuck out of my feeds

Anything nail polish. OMFG. I’m more interested in cars. At least I have one.

Outfit tips. Outfits to finish this summer in style?? Outfits you should already own?? Pretty winter outfits??? Cute summer outfits?? Wedding!!???! WHO DO YOU THINK I AM?!

Children. Please kill me now.

Johnny Depp. WHY does he keep popping up in my Pinterest feed?! Never googled in my life, how is he there??

Feminine anything. Hairdos. Shoes. Themes. Just NO. To be clear, examples of my most recent style inspo: Anders Fridén in In Flames, Twiggy in the 90s (it’s constant, that type of recent), Jonathan Davis – I know none of them have any style really, but that’s not the point.

Peanut butter. Because I need to forget, OK?

Instagram stories. It just bothers me at this point. There are like three users whose stories I watch. And I follow more than 100 accounts. Sooo…

Retweets. Didn’t there use to be a setting where you could block retweets + likes? Which, by the way, I thought I was using but clearly no!?

Football. I know it’s my own fault because of certain users I follow. But come on! You’re a musician, get a different account for your football tweets. Goddammit.

Stupid band/artist tweets by PR people who just don’t get Twitter at all. I.e. not funny, not relevant, just PR -Hello InsertArtistNameHere has released a record-. What no REALLY I had no idea!? Morons.

You want to kill my love for a band/artist, that’s the way to go.

Instead, I could use

More cats. I mean there can never be enough cats.

Alternative outfits/style. I know there are lots and lots of people with quirkier style, how do I get them into my feed??

Just less food. Less. Lots less. That its vegan doesn’t help.

More sarcastic comments. On anything. But on politics is obviously great.

More extreme feminism. What is the point of feminism if it doesn’t upset people??

Cows? Because why not?

Korn. I google Korn. I watch Korn. Why do I have to search out Korn for myself while you serve me Johnny Depp who I’m just not interested in???

More Casey posts. In general. I just want everyone to be as active on social media as Architects when they’re on tour.

Glasgow. Considering the fact that I follow Glasgow Living, there is awful little Glasgow in my feeds. I was expecting more.

…might want some posts to be clearer. As to who’s posting. Because there are a lot of people on stages and large crowds. Sometimes confused as to who’s posting. Might also want some people, who are on the famous side of the spectrum, to use more than their first name. If you just write Tom, I don’t know which one. Just be TomInsertBandNameHere, please?

So yea. Working hard on being bitter and then some.

On my wish list

I just got tickets to see Architects in June, so this year is saved, but it’d be kinda neat if the following could be arsed to come around these parts:

Northlane. Saw them last year when they opened for Amity Affliction. Needless to say, they were brilliant. And they just released a new album this morning, so it shouldn’t be completely impossible??

Casey. Again. Saw last year, was quite impressed. Because they’re quite active on social media they’re always on my mind. This social media thing, it truly is brilliant PR, they don’t even have to talk about their music, just make sure we keep thinking about them. Maybe Brighton this time?

Russell Brand. Yea, yea, he’s not a musician, but he is touring. Been before and it was lots of fun. But it was also Glasgow. No type gig sucks in Glasgow. Exception confirming the rule: Proclaimers.

Glasvegas. But to be fair, I’d settle for a record release date. Or you know, some news? Anything?

Editors. I have no excuse and am probably sick in the head. Just not a festival.

HIM. I love HIM but never been to see HIM, that’s just wrong. They’ll be touring this year and from the looks of it they’re going just about everywhere except here. And to Glasgow in December. That is where I draw the line. One cannot be going to Glasgow in December. Also it’s sold out so that’s one thing I don’t even have to consider…

Nine Inch Nails. I hear they’ve booked a couple of dates in the US. Is it too much to ask they also swing by Europe? I could expand “these parts” to include Berlin. For NIN anyway. Actually…Berlin’s current gig selection is looking pretty good already. So maybe Berlin regardless?

Was thinking that I’d just not go anywhere at all this year, to save money for wallpaper and such. But I am so easily distracted. Who needs wallpaper when I could go to Oslo to see Architects? I mean twice in a year, that’s…also not enough?

Greed. Such greed.

Things to do on a Sunday #3

A tag! A tag on a Sunday after a grueling week that just about sucked all the life out of you, pretty much all I can manage.

Natural response to a horrible week: thoughts of escape. To anywhere but here.

A travel tag it is! This one is blatantly stolen from LaurenEllen.

Where was your first plane to?

Apparently, my parents thought it was v. v. important for me and my brother to experience flying at an early age; we flew to Stockholm. Must have been..six? Seven?

Then there was a huge gap of about 10 years until I ever set foot on a plan again. And I went to Bordeaux of all places. And by myself. Did the trip go smoothly? Obviously no!

Where have you travelled to that you would love to visit again?

I like repeats. I also like to be able to plan, which is way easier if you go somewhere where you’ve been before. You know I like to go to Glasgow. Like every time. But because that is such an obvious choice…

I’ve been craving Prague lately. What’s holding me back is if I’m going to travel, I want to see some band play. So far no luck.

Preferred method of travel; planes, trains or car?

I find the actual vehicle is of less importance than the surrounding circumstances. And in Swedish this would be known as jag är så jävla dryyyg. But honestly; I’m fine with planes as long as there are no delays, no luggage missing, the airport isn’t crazy crowded. Trains can also be good. You can move around and I always feel safe in trains, and they generally take you to the center of the city. But there are often delays and the trip itself already takes such a long time.

Car would be my least favorite. You can’t read, traffic, general feeling of being unsafe. And it takes such a lot of time.

Favorite travel website?

If you just keep going back to places you’ve been before, you don’t really need a travel website, do you?

Where would you travel to just eat the food?

Food is always a main reason for any trip I feel. I would travel any place that offers a decent selection of vegan eats. I hear Edinburgh have upped their game when it comes to vegan eats. Makes me more interested in Edinburgh than I have been for a while.

Is there a place you would never go again?

Stockholm. I never want to go to Stockholm. Honestly, at this point, I’d prefer going to Gothenburg. But as long as you live in Sweden though, you can’t really avoid visiting Stockholm I don’t think.

Do you prefer the window, aisle, or middle seat?

I used to love window seats. But then you’ve been trapped between the window and some male passenger who’s fallen asleep and just will not wake up one too many times it just looses its appeal. I will pick aisle every time.

How do you pass the time on the air plane?

Talk to sis, sleep, listen to music, read book, stare out window.

Best not think about traveling any more, because I’m getting myself a huge mortgage, I won’t be going nowhere for a while. Probably. Unless there’s some band I really, really need to see.

100 day song challenge #49

#49 A song with the word go in the title

When you go to gigs in Glasgow you’ll quickly notice that they have a chant they do regardless of show; here we here we here we fucking go.

The Architects show in november was no exception.

Mr Singer guy cleverly said that this was basically the audience writing songs for them; that a song should be made including the line here we fucking go.

Little did he know that there already is (at least one) such song. This little song called Go square go by Glasgow band Glasvegas.

Naturally, I’ll be expecting a cover. Can’t even begin to imagine what that would sound like. Except for a lot of noise.

Let’s pray he’ll remain ignorant.

  2. I want my hair to grow to any sort of length. I swear I will stop straightening it soon as it gets some length. (Not making any promises on the volume master tho, but shh!)

    The hair. Could be longer.
  3. I want to paint something. Like a wall. Move some furniture. Get some plants. I.e. I really, really want to redecorate.

That’s all for now!
