February summary

February. 🙄 What is this shit?

February 1st; a.k.a. day of the biggest snowstorm of year. Probably 10 years even. Maybe more. Can’t recall last time school was cancelled because of snow.

So clearly we’re stuck in winter until…July? That’s great.

I’ve struggled with the reading. Started reading a number of books on my TBR, didn’t really care for any of them and quickly removed them from TBR. At least I had the presence of mind to not stick with them.

Reread Idun by Johanne Hildebrandt and Incubus by Carol Goodman instead. Both of which are still absolute favorites; they read like pop songs. Idun, by the way, is the only book ever to make me cry. Which I’d forgotten and tried to write it off as PMS. It. Wasn’t.

Meanwhile, started on this pile:

Let’s see how many will make it into next month’s post. (..if any?)

Food things

Hummus. Specifically sun dried tomato + smoked paprika hummus, with a pinch of garlic salt. Gawd the years I wasted on cheese. Honestly. Why is vegan cheese? I know it not.

It would be easier to list the things I’m not adding this concoction to. Also doesn’t matter what type bean/lentil you use for the hummus, long as there is sun dried tomato (in oil) + smoked paprika and some form of garlic. The expression it is life I suppose would make sense here?

Big helping of a smoky, red lentil hummus.

But if I’m giving you one food tip this month it’s these apple protein muffins. They’re so moist, and cinnamony, you should give them a go!

Face stuff

Finally caved and introduced a twice weekly hydration mask into my skincare routine. I did have a hydrating mask in my collection already, but because it’s inefficient, it never became a regular in my routine. Sooo…if you’re thinking about getting the Body Shop’s British Rose Fresh Plumping Mask, I would say don’t. Get the No7 Hydration Mask instead! You will not regret it.

H&M single eyeshadow Down to Earth. I like having a darker shade to pop in my bag for touch-ups, or when I arrive at work, finally wake up and realize that’s just not enough makeup. This one, it’s great for that! Love how it’s a cooler type brown with a metallic finish.

Tried a gel eyeliner. I started missing just a wee smudge of liner; decided to give gel a go because I cannot stand pens and I don’t want the perfection of a liquid (or similar) liner. Maybe it’s good. But unfortunately, the H&M drama cream eyeliner is not for people with sensitive eyes. Like me. Definitely not.

Treated myself to a new highlighter from MUA. Cheap as they come and on the gold side, this’ll last me years to be sure.

Also ditto blush. Cheap as they come, not on the yellow side to be fair, rather a cold pink and I do love it so.

Blog post worth mentioning

This and this post by Annahita at *whinar* about how we care about all ethical aspects of the beauty industry, except for how workers are treatedbest posts I read all month. I want + need more posts like this! Why are there not more posts like this? I wish I could write them myself but I clearly lack knowledge and need people to tell me.

Bottom line: consumption is unethical. Buying fair trade makes little to no difference. If you want to make a difference, you need to get into politics. And it’s proof that we need regulation and legislation.

Best Insta add

Instaglasgow. I remain obsessed with Glasgow. There is clearly something wrong with me. Oooor is this objectively the prettiest place on earth…? I’m going with yes.

Course. Edinburgh, not far behind.

Listened to

!! ionnalee. See now, this makes watching Go’ Kväll worth while. It does happen that they invite someone that’s just amazing. Ionnalee reminds me of Jennie Abrahamsson, coincidentally also a discovery via Go’ Kväll, with a splash of Eivør. Someone on the show knows good electronica.

Also. Have you listened to Mike Shinoda’s Post Traumatic EP? You might want to. The first two tracks have really caught my ear. So to speak? if pushed, Over and over might be my favorite of the two (gawd my love of repetition is great).

Also. Casey’s Phosphenes. Looking forward to the album release in March!

Monthly menstrual report

I thought I had my cycles all figured out but this cycle, it’s not behaving as expected. I honestly don’t know what it’s doing. I’m on day 46. Which is great, because that means at least one month of no PMS. This might be the PMS phase but symptoms are vague at best, with the exception of a hypochondria currently telling me I’m gluten intolerant. Like FFS, at least don’t go with the goddamn trend.

If it’s not PMS it means I’m just a hypochondriac. Regardless of hormonal levels. I’m not sure how I feel about that.

This cycle, it’s not making sense. Yay for longer cycle obvs, but predictability, there is something to be said for predictability.

Also yay because I’ve finally taken some responsibility and picked up a tampons from a brand that does not test on animals and is better for the environment. But ngh, so uncomfortable free bleeding feels like a better option. And that’s with a big helping of lube. So the less the bleeding, the less tampons I need consume.

Maybe I should just ask to for the Cerazette back? Feels like I keep getting back to maybe Cerazette wasn’t half bad.

December favorites

I know I may have suggested in this one post to skip the December summary, but I do love the end of month summaries, and anyway, it’s inconsistent to skip a month. Can’t have that, can we?

New track from Casey!

Even more exciting; they’re releasing a new album in March. Hoping there’ll be at least one tour date that works for me. Hoping for Scotland? Well obviously.

Random tracks

You know when Spotify sort of gets stuck, and every morning you open it you have the same tracks in queue? Despite the fact you’ve already been through that very queue. I’ve been stuck on Storm the Sky for weeks. Not that I mind. This one is a favorite:

And my obsession with this (old) Deaf Havana track is bordering on embarrassing:

If I had sense I’d be embarrassed, unfortunately for me, I do not.

I’ve been a bit bored with makeup lately, bored and uninventive, but I recently got back to the halo and I’m seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

Very much inspired by this lady:

Speaking of makeup, best quote relating to makeup comes from Jamie Genivieve who argued that “Makeup should make you look unapproachable.” YES! That’s exactly it! I keep saying I want makeup to make me look angry, but unapproachable is much closer to what I really mean.

Dyed hair

Me: Looks v. v. different! Camera: …except for it doesn’t tho.

This time, I went for a dark brown + red combo; I’m planning ahead, preparing to phase out the red. Actually really liked the brown (as in “how is this not my natural color??”). Bonus points for way simpler application than the Manic Panic dye. You use it on dirty, dry hair, and shampoo it afterwards. Leaves no traces of dye, unlike the Manic Panic. Which is nice, for a change.

Beauty Sick by Renee Engeln. OK so this isn’t exactly a favorite, but I want to mention it because I think it has the potential to be somebody’s favorite. The reason it’s not my favorite is I like women who are angry and/or upset. If Engeln is either, she hides it very well. By which I mean, she’s objective, like the researcher she is.

I was also expecting to get a good shouting to in this book, as someone interested in beauty. That is not the case at all. Instead, what Engeln argues is our current obsession with beauty is just out of proportion and we need to dial it back because it is not doing us any good, quite the opposite in fact. But also, beauty is never going to be something the human being is capable of disregarding completely. It’s not within the possibilities of our body.

Despite it not being a favorite, I do recommend giving it a read, especially if you are interested in beauty.

Hatet [English: The hatred] by Maria Sveland. You should know by now that I ♥ Sveland. This book is about present day antifeminism in Sweden, disguised as “equality”, trying to use misdirection, to distract from issue at hand, talking about an imagined “hatred of men” as some sort of threat to society, when in fact the hatred of women is currently, literally, killing women. There are men who genuinely think men are subordinate to women.

Yes. We all know that all positions of power in society are held by women. Women make more money than men. Mm. Yes. We all. Know that. Is the reality. (??????)

Begs the question, are these men and women stupid or mentally ill? Their world does not seem to resemble our world. I’m hoping mentally ill. There’s a chance therapy would work, right? Because reasoning with them, it’s clearly like talking to a wall. Well actually, a wall would be better. A wall is quiet, it gets that saying nothing is sometimes the best thing to do.

So basically, very upsetting book on an important subject, and brilliantly written too.

This also a favorite because it reminded me of a few brilliant people I should be following on social media. (Gudrun Schyman z.B. The fact that she is not the president of Sweden is plenty evidence that we’re severely deficient in the gender equality department. Never mind that we don’t do presidents in Sweden.)

PMS-podden! Hours and hours and hours about PMS! I didn’t know about this one before because??? They talk all about the hormones and try out different methods of reducing PMS, it’s just all sorts of brilliant! Also introduced a new word into my vocabulary menshybris, literally menstruation hubris, although I’d probably translate it as pre-ovulation invincibility because it refers to the feeling of invincibility that you get between the end of your period and ovulation. Or maybe pre-ovulation energy peak? A.k.a. the only time I want to be alive.

I’m really not doing a good job sticking to the subject in this post.

Never mind, moving on!

Vegan/cruelty free

I loved this run-through of different perspectives and ways of reasoning when it comes to cruelty free. What especially strikes a chord with me is as a vegan, you do still go to restaurants that are not vegan, and you ask for the vegan option, and let them know there is a demand for vegan options. This way of reasoning can be applied to companies that are cruelty-free but whose parent company does test on animal. It’s still a vote for the cruelty-free.

Let’s also have a friendly reminder:

Yes. I’m turning into -that- vegan.

Inevitable favorite

Icebugs. What are icebugs? Icebugs is a type boot with warm lining, waterproof and with traction for grip on icy surfaces. 2017 is showing no mercy. This time last year I was still walking around in my Vagabond high top sneakers; it wasn’t that cold, it wasn’t that icy and it definitely wasn’t that wet. This year; all of that, ALL OF IT.

Best music rant in a while

Best retweets

I’ve been noting for a while now that *whinar* (well-known Swedish beauty blogger) is the best at retweets. I love her retweets. They have nothing to do with beauty, unless I’m mistaken, they’re of a more political persuasion. For example:

It reads:

The wealthy need
more money
to want to work.
The poor less
to want to work.
This is liberalism.
This is reprehensible.

(And if anyone’s in the mood for a discussion about how to translate avskyvärt in this context, let me know! I’ve tried a number of different ways of translating, not entirely happy with any of them.)

Apparently, Spotify don’t believe in collective agreements. This is terrible news. I want to know and not know at the same time.

I wouldn’t follow either of these accounts, but I do like being served the best bits.

Is a beautiful thing. I’ve been watching

Holly Exley.
Lily Melrose. Especially loving Lily this month.
Katie Snooks.
Rachel Aust. She’s very. Disciplined? And has PCOS. I’m captivated. Although she seems to have quit mid-way?

Food stuff

Finally got myself some earl grey cream. There isn’t much to brag about where I live, but our tea shop is top notch! This earl grey cream is every bit as good as the fancy earl grey cream I had in Brighton.

Monthly menstrual report

I’ve researched how the menstrual cycle affects exercise. This article is quite informative if you’re interested in knowing more. Not quite what I’m looking for though; I’m looking for specific instructions on how to deal with exercise and different hormonal levels for non-athletes in combination with PCO. So ja, v. v. specific.

At the very least, I’d like to know if I can use Provera to ease some of my issues, or would it help to be back on the pill? ALSO, do I need to up my supplements? Reintroduce magnesium and vitamin D?

There are sources suggesting carb cycling as a solution (my eating disordered brain is all YESYES! DO THAT!); more/regular amount of carbs pre-ovulation, lower intake post ovulation. Which would help with water retention, which, I’m suspecting, is a major reason why, for example, the Wednesday class is a breeze pre-ovulation, and so difficult I have to cheat to get through it post ovulation.

Or maybe I should just go to a different class? Or no class? (Please say no class.)

I.e. PMS was bad this month. I guess the trade-off is the period itself hasn’t been that bad for a while. Obviously not counting the first day of the period when I decided it was a good idea to go to a class at 9 in the morning with extra focus on cardio and I just wanted to die because I had literally no energy. In hindsight, shouldn’t I have been able to guess that would be the case?? Especially since I was also completely depleted of energy the days before the period. Order is not restored magically over night just because you get your period. I should know that.

Shuffle the music tag

Third music post in a row, fun innit!? (Well I think it is, suspecting I’m the only one tho, especially since no one called me out on using the wrong goddamn translation in previous post, buuuttttt…I don’t seem to care?)

I was tagged by the lovely Lise over → here, thanks! 🙂

The Rules:
1. Thank the person who nominated you and link to their blog
2. Shuffle your entire music library and talk about the FIRST FIFTEEN songs that come up
3. Mention the songs as well as the artists
4. Tag 7 people or more to do this tag and let them know

As you may know, unless you’re super new here, I do love to rant about the music I listen to. In fact, it is the reason this blog even exists; I was looking for blogs ranting about music, found none, so I had to do it myself.

Still looking. So far no luck, far too few rants about music in my feed. V. disappointing.

That being said, I do encourage you to consider yourself tagged and do this tag! (..and that’s all the tagging I’ll be doing…)

Before we get into the 15 songs, is it at all possible to shuffle your entire music library? I’m genuinely curious.

I for one can’t; my music library consists of a number of different formats so it simply cannot be done.

Theoretically, I could save most of it to Spotify. Most of it. Die Ärzte and my all-time favorite record Relief through Release by Tura Satana never seem to stick. Also, if I’m being honest, and despite the big CD decluttering of 2017, can’t remember all CDs I still own. And then there’s the stuff I have on an external hard drive…I’ve got some interesting things, you know, from back when Napster was a thing.

So what I’ve done is opened Spotify, selected Tracks and shuffled.

Let’s go!

Dead by April; Last Goodbye
Dead by April is what I listen to for some energy, which apparently I haven’t needed lately. Could not have told you what song this was if I tried. Unless you’d settle for catchy metal number? Pop song with a bit of metal added for good measure? You know, typical Dead by April track?

Bear’s Den; The Love we Stole
Er. Yes. Bear’s Den is a new favorite. But so far, I only like their most recent release, the album Red Earth & Pouring Rain. This is from a previous release which I’ve been meaning to remove from my saved tracks because I don’t get it.

Thrice; The Window
This is probably the most anonymous track off of their 2016 release To Be Everywhere is to be Nowhere to me; I need to listen to it to remember it. That being said, the album was one of my favorite releases of 2016. But if I was recommending you a track off of this record, it’d be Black Honey.

In This Moment; Scarlet
Yes, when it comes to In This Moment, I only listen to the hits.

Casey; Cavities
Mentioned just about a zillion times in this here blog before. Not the track maybe but the band. I do love Casey. This track though, is probably not for beginners. I’d say start with Ceremony or Little Bird.

Dead by April; Empathy
I dunno what to say. Your typical Dead by April track, but again, maybe not one I’d recommend. If you’re in the mood for some Dead by, then you might as well, but I wouldn’t add it to any playlist.

The Amity Affliction; Anchors
This is starting to look an awful lot like a list of songs I don’t particularly care for. I love Amity, you know I love Amity, but this track isn’t miserable enough in my opinion. ..which isn’t saying much. I’ve listened to this track at least 64 times, so you know. I don’t hate it.

Dead by April; Abnormal
OK look, Dead by April is v. close to guilty pleasure. It’s not exactly the first band that comes to mind when asked about what music I listen to. I wouldn’t hide it, but I would probably argue that it’s mainly for energy/workout playlists. Truth is I was obsessed for quite a big chunk of time. Still a strange obsession because usually, whatever band you obsess about you want to see play live. Not so with Dead by April. It’s their image. Rubs me the wrong way.

Linkin Park; From the Inside
Just reading the title, I couldn’t tell you what track that is. I mean I recognize the title, but the melody/lyrics is a blank to me. Scrobbled 3 times since 2015. So ja, that would be why.

Korn; Somebody someone
I am starting to question what tracks I’ve saved on Spotify. This is another barely listened to track, scrobbled twice. And I can tell you, if it’s up to me, it’s not going to be scrobbled again.

In Flames; With Eyes Wide Open
Finally! A track I know and love! This one I’ve added to a number of playlists. And can I just say that the album this track is on, Siren Charms, is so underrated.

Recoil; Last Call for Liquid Courage
If I was listing my all-time favorite albums, this album, Liquid, would be on it. I’ve ranted about it before. In case you’re unfamiliar with Recoil, it’s the solo project of Alan Wilder, who used to be in Depeche Mode (who we all wish was still in Depeche, or at least would come back, and soon!). He’s gathered such an incredible group of singers for this record, contributing to its menacing sound. Samantha Coerbell, a spoken word performer, is on vocal duty on this track.

Being as an Ocean; Floating through Darkness
Ah yes, another album love I’ve gushed about before. This is one of the instrumental tracks on the record, simple melody on a piano.

Deaf Havana; St. Paul’s
Now the bells of St. Paul’s ring out in my head—Oh just go listen to it!

Bear’s Den; Agape—Live at Melkweg
Nooo, Spotify, you were on such a roll. Why are you giving me this??

Well, Spotify, that was quite a poor round of shuffling on your part; I take absolutely no responsibility for the results.

..but I might be off to edit my saved tracks…

I have a lot of questions #6

Why would you put eggs in black bean brownies? WHY???

Do NYX think we’re stupid? I’m obviously talking about the #Nofilter powder. I mean I have it, because pressed powder to carry about in your bag, it is a necessity, and apparently I like NYX. But it’s a powder! Couldn’t replace a filter in a million years.

Not that I don’t like it, I just feel like they take us for fools. And yes, I do need to get me a new NYX blush in Taupe. One of these days I will become a minimalist, and this will be my one blush.

Am I too old for Manic Panic’s Enchanted Forest?

Is “the humidity messes up my hair” a valid excuse for not going out? Not that it really matters. Because I’m not going out. It messes up my hair. (Looking for any and every excuse to not be outside? Maybe.)

Why have I bought an apartment with a balcony? I have a balcony. This year, I’ve been on it for about 5 minutes total. And only because I felt forced. Because I have it, not because I particularly wanted to. My new balcony is bigger than what I currently have. That’s. Great?

Do I have to go back to work? Also, why do I have this extreme aversion to my job? It’s not difficult, my closest coworkers are nice people, and, for what it is, it is very flexible. What more do I want??

Does the singer in Casey know that Twitter is not a dating app? Or maybe a more appropriate question is, could someone please inform the singer in Casey that Twitter is not a dating app? Yes I know I could unfollow! That is not issue here. I’m concerned. That he will come to regret what he’s doing. When he’s not 20 anymore. Also tired of seeing tweets liked clearly because some girl has posted a pic of herself being pretty. I’m going to have to unfollw, aren’t I? Boo.

How do I decrease my tea consumption? Currently worse than it’s ever been. Could that be why I’m not sleeping or is it just, me being me? Tossing and turning + nightmares for weeks on end now. I’m starting to feel bit lacking in the rested department.

What is with this obsession with stating the size of the clothes you buy when doing hauls? Are you actively trying to trigger people with EDs?

Why is my knee acting up already? I’m going to two workout classes a week. TWO! That’s like nothing. Piece of crap body. Am I going to have to resort to low-impact only? And in which case, how do you see that happening??

What the hell is going on with YouTube on my Mac?? Seriously! I’m googling it and I don’t know why the hell it’s looking like this or how to make it go back to regular layout. Doesn’t matter which browser I use either. GAH!

Skärmavbild 2017-09-09 kl. 09.30.33.png

Are people ever going to learn that they have to plan? I’m not just sitting around waiting for texts to review with ridiculously short deadlines. I consider it an insult to be asked to do anything within a matter of hours unless I knew of it ahead of time. So that I could plan for it. (The answer is obvs NO.)

Dream lineup

This post is a part of the Endless Blog Challenge, which I introduced/created on Sunday.

This prompt asks participants in the challenge to list four bands that should do a tour together.

There is a reason I’m asking for four. It is the perfect number. Have you been to gigs where more than four bands are playing? It’s excruciating. Too long. And more often than not, there will be at least one band that’s just not your cup of tea.

Funny thing is, my dream lineups either are or have at one point in time been touring. The one problem is that they insist on touring where/when I cannot go.

Or well I could. But then I’d have to live off of rice and lentils for the rest of the year. Which is probably where I draw the line.

Here’s an example!

Amity, Alazka and Casey all on the same tour!??!

..not too keen on Counterparts but let’s ignore that for now.

I have done extensive research. Getting to any of these places and not paying a small fortune is difficult. Put mildly. November, December and January are decidedly terrible months to be traveling from Sweden.

Since apparently Europe = German speaking countries, Berlin could be done. But they’re not playing Berlin. (??? Has to be a mistake ???) So I’m assuming they’ve done this on purpose. They’re targeting me specifically, making sure I can’t go. Or maybe to test how badly I want to go? It is one of them two for sure. (Oh yes, the world revolves around me, didn’t you know?)

Other bands also touring terrible places:

Stray from the Path; at least they have the decency to tour a reasonable time of year (October) but Södertälje…? Who plays in Södertälje??? Of all places! Or some non-central place in the general Gothenburg area? That’s a no go. But if I’m being honest, Stray is, at this point in time, the band I’m most keen to see.

Northlane; They’re in the UK late November, and I’m there’s early November, so that doesn’t work, and then Gothenburg in December. Yess.. I can see it now. Stuck on a cold train in the middle of nowhere Sweden in December. I’m going with no…

Thrice; Now if only Thrice could bring Stray along. Or the other way around, doesn’t really matter. I’d even consider the US, which is where they’re touring next.

Architects; They are touring early 2018. January/February in other countries. I feel as if attendance is mandatory. London? Berlin? At the same time. I’m not sure I’m willing to go anywhere that time a year. If they were bringing Stray (det var då ett jävla tjat?!), I could maybe change my mind. They often do, but not this time. For shame

1. I am one whiny fan.

2. Current dream line-up:

Thrice // Stray from the Path // Northlane // Casey

I’d disregard my budget entirely for this lineup at any venue in Glasgow. Any!

Anywhere else: budget might come into play.

3. I live in the wrong place. And I’m not even moving anywhere near the right place. FFS.

In which I introduce a tag with a short rant

I’ve been roaming around WordPress to find new blogs to follow.

It ain’t going great.

I’m specifically looking for blogs written by people my age, because life advice from 20-somethings..it does get a bit frustrating when you’re no longer 20, and also blogs written by people with similar interests, and/or a more varied content.

Makeup is great and all, but I have other interests too.

Being even more specific…I need more blogs that rant on music related topics. Rant! I don’t want anything under the impression of being objective, no reviews or “let me tell you about this band” because BORING. I want to know about what music people consume, the how, what and when.

I would say I also need more feminist blogs. But there are too many types of feminism that I don’t agree with. Not to mention the ones I’ve stumbled on trying to explain the basics to others while trying to be not too extreme (WTF!? Be extreme or go away). Just makes me want to ram my head in the wall. VALERIE BRYSON, ANYONE?!?

I’ll just stick with the feminists I follow on other platforms. Besides, you really only need fannyarsinoe in your life and you’re covered. (YES I’M A FANGIRL, can’t help it.)

What I did find, however, is a good music tag. Next best thing surely!?

I think so. Let’s go!

(Didn’t say where this one is from, thusly no credit.)

Which bands/artist do you own the most albums by?
If we’re talking about physical albums, then Nick Cave. Yes, I kept them when I decluttered. Einstürzende Neubauten is a close second, and only because they haven’t released as many albums. They’re the nicest ones in my collection though, paper casing. Just saying.

The Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus casing tho, also not bad. A favorite track:

What was the last song you listened to?
Blood in My Mouth by Amity Affliction.

In my blog search, I also came across one blogger who complained about how Amity + In Flames (among others) had changed their sound, and not to the better, so I had to do a compare and contrast. Which is a fun little exercise I highly recommend.

Not sure why I felt compelled to, because the whole premise of the post was it is not as heavy thusly it is worse. SIGH. Yes because we all know heavy equals good. JFC.

In addition to which I don’t agree; neither Amity nor In Flames have become less heavy with each release. They sort of vary. Not that it matters! Because heavy doesn’t equal good.

Seems to me people are going to have learn to differentiate between heavy and a more chaotic sound.

Here’s what I’m thinking. There are bands that at the beginning of their career have ideas that they perhaps not quite have the skills to execute, which makes them more creative. This contributes to a more interesting and somewhat chaotic sound, sometimes mistaken for heavy/less accessible, which in turn means fewer people “get it” contributing to whoever does get it feeling that they’re just sooo cool.

It’s so boring I want to cry.

This song tho!

What’s in your CD player right now?

There’s a CD player in my car. If there is a CD in it it’s either All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us by Architects or Relief Through Release by Tura Satana.

If you have somehow managed to not listen to AOGHAU already, you really should give this one track a listen, promise you won’t regret it!

What was the last show you attended?
in June. They played C.A.N.C.E.R. Not their most accessible track I would say. You?

What was the greatest show you’ve been to?
This sort of assumes that there’s a great difference between shows. I just find that most shows I’ve been to lately, well I mean they’re carried out by competent people, you know? And I’m not overly impressed by people putting on too much of a show.

For example, if I compare the 3 Bring Me the Horizon gigs I’ve been to, I liked the first one the best, the one without all the screens and the arena-size venue. Because the setlist was better and I liked that they were lit from behind. It was a nice effect. I like simple things.

Track that fell off the setlist for the arena tour:

What was the worst show you’ve ever been to?

Erm. I could argue Being as An Ocean because I left after two songs, but I wasn’t there primarily to see Being as an Ocean so that’s a bit unfair. And the main reason for leaving was I was dead tired.

So I’m going to argue 30 Seconds to Mars mainly because:

  1. I still feel Jared is acting the part.
  2. Fine, invite people on stage, but don’t fucking spend 15 minutes picking the exact people to come up. It doesn’t make for a good show.
  3. Bringing out the acoustic guitar. Just nooooo. I’m not saying it’s bad per se, it’s just not my cup of tea.

When they started picking people out of the crowd I left because that’s just where I draw the line.

And anyway. They’d already played The Kill.

Absolutely not seeing them again. No matter how much I love The Kill.

What is the most musically involved you have ever been?
Let’s just say I haven’t been.

What show are you looking forward to?
Deaf Havana
! Brighton!

Also desperately hoping Stray from the Path will add Casey to their UK/Europe tour. It’s extremely unlikely, but my brain is all Capsize is on the bill! They played last time I saw Casey, so maybe!?!??

Yeayea, I’ve got a hangup.

What is your favorite band shirt?

Mmm. Either my Manson one or the Bring Me one.

What musician would you like to hang out with for a day?

I’m not sure I’d want that? What would we do? Go for vegan eats in Glasgow? OH I KNOW. Glasvegas’ Jonna. Because she hangs out in Glasgow. And is from Norrland. I.e. supercool.

And she plays the piano in addition to drums standing. I don’t know how you could be cooler than that?

Who is one musician or group you wish would make a comeback?

I don’t really listen a lot to any band that doesn’t exist right now. I mean there’s My Chemical Romance, but unlike the rest of the world, it’s not something I crave. Don’t get me wrong, I love them, but I don’t need them to make a comeback. There are other bands.

Also. I used to want Panik back. They’ve recently made a comeback of sorts. And. I’m not happy about it. It makes me sad.

Because. This:

I don’t understand it.

Who is one band/artist you’ve never seen live but always wanted to?

I’m going to have to say Nine Inch Nails, aren’t I?

Surely there will be a European tour eventually?

Name four or more flawless albums.

Actually flawless and in I wouldn’t skip a single song? Live Through This by Hole, Lost Forever // Lost Together by Architects and All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us by the same band and Deaf Havana’s All These Countless Nights.

Almost made the list: Relief Through Release by Tura Satana. That goddamn Nirvana cover, cannot stand it. Let the Ocean Take Me; the outro of Never Alone makes me cringe, ditto last track of Thrice’s To Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere.

How many concerts have you been to in total?
Not that many in my opinion. Can’t be bothered to count though.

Who have you seen the most live?

Architects. Five times. Which in my opinion isn’t that many. But it depends on your frame of reference I guess.

What is your favorite movie soundtrack?
Trouble Every Day by Tindersticks. It’s on this compilation:

What was your last musical ‘phase’ before you wisened up?
Before I fell into this black hole of post-hardcore type music (it’s what last.fm tells me I to listen to, OK?), I was listening to a lot of singer-songwriter type music, i.e. lots of Richard Hawley, Iain Morrisson, the National, Tindersticks, you know, nice music that doesn’t ask a lot of its listener. I still listen to it, just not as much.

What is your ‘guilty pleasure’ that you hate to admit liking?
I tend to only feel guilty about what ever I’m obsessively listening to at the time, i.e. I feel more guilty about the amount than the actual performer. Except for. I currently feel zero percent guilty that I’m listening to Amity as if there are no other bands.

Think we’ve established I do feel slightly guilty about listening to Korn though. Because they are not with the feminist agenda and I find that problematic.

I obviously tag hitherdither. Anyone else up for a rant about music? I’ll tag you!

10 things that need to get the fuck out of my feeds

Anything nail polish. OMFG. I’m more interested in cars. At least I have one.

Outfit tips. Outfits to finish this summer in style?? Outfits you should already own?? Pretty winter outfits??? Cute summer outfits?? Wedding!!???! WHO DO YOU THINK I AM?!

Children. Please kill me now.

Johnny Depp. WHY does he keep popping up in my Pinterest feed?! Never googled in my life, how is he there??

Feminine anything. Hairdos. Shoes. Themes. Just NO. To be clear, examples of my most recent style inspo: Anders Fridén in In Flames, Twiggy in the 90s (it’s constant, that type of recent), Jonathan Davis – I know none of them have any style really, but that’s not the point.

Peanut butter. Because I need to forget, OK?

Instagram stories. It just bothers me at this point. There are like three users whose stories I watch. And I follow more than 100 accounts. Sooo…

Retweets. Didn’t there use to be a setting where you could block retweets + likes? Which, by the way, I thought I was using but clearly no!?

Football. I know it’s my own fault because of certain users I follow. But come on! You’re a musician, get a different account for your football tweets. Goddammit.

Stupid band/artist tweets by PR people who just don’t get Twitter at all. I.e. not funny, not relevant, just PR -Hello InsertArtistNameHere has released a record-. What no REALLY I had no idea!? Morons.

You want to kill my love for a band/artist, that’s the way to go.

Instead, I could use

More cats. I mean there can never be enough cats.

Alternative outfits/style. I know there are lots and lots of people with quirkier style, how do I get them into my feed??

Just less food. Less. Lots less. That its vegan doesn’t help.

More sarcastic comments. On anything. But on politics is obviously great.

More extreme feminism. What is the point of feminism if it doesn’t upset people??

Cows? Because why not?

Korn. I google Korn. I watch Korn. Why do I have to search out Korn for myself while you serve me Johnny Depp who I’m just not interested in???

More Casey posts. In general. I just want everyone to be as active on social media as Architects when they’re on tour.

Glasgow. Considering the fact that I follow Glasgow Living, there is awful little Glasgow in my feeds. I was expecting more.

…might want some posts to be clearer. As to who’s posting. Because there are a lot of people on stages and large crowds. Sometimes confused as to who’s posting. Might also want some people, who are on the famous side of the spectrum, to use more than their first name. If you just write Tom, I don’t know which one. Just be TomInsertBandNameHere, please?

So yea. Working hard on being bitter and then some.

3 songs using allusions

Allusion has to be my favorite figure of speech. Especially when used in lyrics.

Basically, what an allusion is, is an indirect reference to another text.

For example!

My Ruin; Terror. I had a dream Joe, that you were standing in the middle of an open road //I had a dream Joe that your hands were raised up to the sky and your mouth was covered in foam. Alludes to Nick Cave’s I had a dream, Joe.

Tairrie (i.e. the My Ruin vocalist) is the queen of allusions, she uses it in lyrics often and well. The entire Relief Through Release record reads like a long allusion to some of the best parts of 90s pop culture. I especially enjoy the Romeo + Juliet references in Omnia Vinat Amor. So well done.

Casey; Hell. Someday you will ache, the way I ache. To be fair, I don’t know if this is actually an allusion or just coincidence, unlike Tairrie. She is a Nick Cave fan; it’s def no coincidence. Plus it’d be a weird coincidence. This though, it is a repeat of a line in Hole’s Doll parts.

Markus Krunegård; Everybody hurts. Obviously refers to R.E.M.’s Everybody Hurts: Där lärde jag mig gilla Everyboy Hurts (English: It’s where I learned to love Everybody Hurts). Unusually clumsy reference for being Markus; he’s usually so good with words.

3 bands I’d rather

Adept is opening for Architects in Malmö.

I’ve known for a while and I’ve a hard time accepting it.

Like really? One opening act? And it’s Adept? Really?

Yeah yeah, I should probably a. get a hobby, and b. remember that attendance is not mandatory. I can stay in the bar.

But still.

Seems to me there are other and better choices.

Northlane. They’ve released a record and far as I know no Swedish date booked. And they were so good back in December when they opened for Amity Affliction. (..maybe even slightly, just a little, dare I say, better than Amity..?)

I simply cannot understand why not.

Annisokay. I like Annisokay well enough. But I don’t particularly want to see them play (no reason really, just don’t). Still I’d much rather see Annisokay than Adept.

Casey. I mean, just look at this:

If I’m being honest. It is specifically Casey my brain has decided it cannot accept that they’re not on the bill. There is no logic behind it. Could be because I keep getting tweets in my feed saying how Casey is the band to see. As if I didn’t know already. Doesn’t mean that it would be an obvious choice for opening act for Architects. But still.

This is not a comment on Adept’s skills or talent. I’m sure they have it. (For now…) But they do strike me as a band geared towards men. And I find that insanely boring.

When I could be seeing Casey.

It makes no sense to me.

That’s all.

Dear March,

We were not off to a good start, were we? Car that needed fixing, coworkers clearly trying to kill me by dumping all of their work on me and going off on holidays (???), and then cats being sicker than usual – such fun SUCH FUN.

There were a few things that didn’t suck though.

Casey released a video for Little Bird (track off their 2016 release Love is not enough).

Not sure if it’s objectively good or if I’m just being a fangirl.

The new Johannes Oerding is everything you want from Johannes:

Best track all March tho, the new Robyn track. If there is one track from March 2017 you need in your life it’s Robyn’s Honey:

Been double-checking if the full track has been released like a woman possessed. Quite embarrassing really. If it wasn’t released on Friday it’s probably not going to be released on Saturday morning either, now is it?

Siri Pettersen’s Röta ♥♥♥

I got more shoes. (SIGH.) If you’re going to be a mindful shopper, you need to not watch hauls. I don’t so much anymore. Not as an active decision it just lost its appeal. Partly because I actually, sometimes, like what I find in my closet and have no need to buy more stuff, and partly because I’m not sure where to even fit more stuff and still be able to find said stuff, and if you’re not in the market for another item, hauls aren’t that much fun.

Except when it’s Helen Anderz. I’ll watch pretty much anything she puts out. In the end. Sometimes I’m a bit like “weeellllll.. I don’t really need to know how to dye your hair purple because that’s not something I’m going to be doing”.

However. Helen’s videos can be watched even if the content isn’t on the top of your list of interests. They’re that good.

Alright then. That quickly turned into some sort of poorly disguised fangirl rant. Point was: she hauled platform canvas boots and I couldn’t resist. A boot for summer you say!? I needs it!

On the screen

Just kiss my frog on YouTube. I don’t know how I haven’t stumbled on this channel sooner. I am so in love. Leena posts videos on books, feminism, cruelty free makeup, and her PCOS. Basically, all of my top interests, and she does it so, so well.

Example! Tips for your TBR:

And I really, really want to recommend this old video too, which is a defense of makeup, she makes a convincing argument I feel.

…but somebody please inform her that Not Another Happy Ending is not set in Edinburgh. It’s basically a commercial for Glasgow. I should know, it’s the reason I’ve watched it. I would comment. Only. I hate people who only comment to correct someone else. I don’t want to be that person.

Feud. The story didn’t appeal much to me so I only started watching it as a result of nothing more to watch, but oh, now, I am so in love. The combination of feminism, Susan Sarandon, Jessica Lange and a bit of history is just brilliant.

Oatmeal. If I could eat one thing only for the rest of my life it’d be oatmeal. I’ve been having it for breakfast and dinner on a regular basis. Also a good way to save a bit of extra money, if that’s something you’re interested in.

Left the Lush hair treatment Jasmine And Henna Fluff-Eaze on for an hour + (sister called, and I have my priorities straight) turns out it was just what my hair needed. Similarly…

Maria Nila Color Refresh in the shade autumn red. My god. My hair was never this shiny! And the red is just about perfection. V. v. impressed. One only wishes they’d start doing actual hair dye too.

I correctly predicted when my period was going to turn up. All by myself! Sans any sort of tool. I love Clue and all, but it does feel kind of great to be able to figure things out with your very own brain box, no training or outside help necessary. I’m all for the collecting data, finding patterns, figuring things out, but on a personal level, it’s a releif that I can rely on my brain for something at least. Gives me some sort of hope.

Nina Björk’s reply to Sigrid Aliki’s text in Bang. I’m not usually impressed with the academic rhetorics, but for Björk I will make an exception. Not only eloquent, but also convincing. Not to mention relieved; clearly I needn’t feel bad I didn’t quite manage to get through Aliki’s text. (Yes HI blind faith, Nina Björk is one of my many gods. For those of you unfamiliar with Swedish culture, Björk is one of our best known feminists, she’s an academic and frequently uses feminist theory to analyse literature. Basically.)

Plans for April

  1. First gig of the year!? I’m seeing Little Jinder. And I’m not even traveling for it! Last time I didn’t travel for a gig was…2011 or 2012. Jonathan Johansson, Pipeline, the Klagomuren tour. Which was brilliant. Might have mentioned that before.
  2. THANK GOD FOR EASTER. I need days and days off. Want to save my holidays for the winter tho, not sure work will let me. But maybe I should ask how they’d feel about me taking say all of March off next year? This is one useless month.
