In which I introduce a tag with a short rant

I’ve been roaming around WordPress to find new blogs to follow.

It ain’t going great.

I’m specifically looking for blogs written by people my age, because life advice from 20-somethings..it does get a bit frustrating when you’re no longer 20, and also blogs written by people with similar interests, and/or a more varied content.

Makeup is great and all, but I have other interests too.

Being even more specific…I need more blogs that rant on music related topics. Rant! I don’t want anything under the impression of being objective, no reviews or “let me tell you about this band” because BORING. I want to know about what music people consume, the how, what and when.

I would say I also need more feminist blogs. But there are too many types of feminism that I don’t agree with. Not to mention the ones I’ve stumbled on trying to explain the basics to others while trying to be not too extreme (WTF!? Be extreme or go away). Just makes me want to ram my head in the wall. VALERIE BRYSON, ANYONE?!?

Yes.

I’ll just stick with the feminists I follow on other platforms. Besides, you really only need fannyarsinoe in your life and you’re covered. (YES I’M A FANGIRL, can’t help it.)

What I did find, however, is a good music tag. Next best thing surely!?

I think so. Let’s go!

(Didn’t say where this one is from, thusly no credit.)

Which bands/artist do you own the most albums by?
If we’re talking about physical albums, then Nick Cave. Yes, I kept them when I decluttered. Einstürzende Neubauten is a close second, and only because they haven’t released as many albums. They’re the nicest ones in my collection though, paper casing. Just saying.

The Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus casing tho, also not bad. A favorite track:

What was the last song you listened to?
Blood in My Mouth by Amity Affliction.

In my blog search, I also came across one blogger who complained about how Amity + In Flames (among others) had changed their sound, and not to the better, so I had to do a compare and contrast. Which is a fun little exercise I highly recommend.

Not sure why I felt compelled to, because the whole premise of the post was it is not as heavy thusly it is worse. SIGH. Yes because we all know heavy equals good. JFC.

In addition to which I don’t agree; neither Amity nor In Flames have become less heavy with each release. They sort of vary. Not that it matters! Because heavy doesn’t equal good.

Seems to me people are going to have learn to differentiate between heavy and a more chaotic sound.

Here’s what I’m thinking. There are bands that at the beginning of their career have ideas that they perhaps not quite have the skills to execute, which makes them more creative. This contributes to a more interesting and somewhat chaotic sound, sometimes mistaken for heavy/less accessible, which in turn means fewer people “get it” contributing to whoever does get it feeling that they’re just sooo cool.

It’s so boring I want to cry.

This song tho!

What’s in your CD player right now?

There’s a CD player in my car. If there is a CD in it it’s either All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us by Architects or Relief Through Release by Tura Satana.

If you have somehow managed to not listen to AOGHAU already, you really should give this one track a listen, promise you won’t regret it!

What was the last show you attended?
Architects
in June. They played C.A.N.C.E.R. Not their most accessible track I would say. You?

What was the greatest show you’ve been to?
This sort of assumes that there’s a great difference between shows. I just find that most shows I’ve been to lately, well I mean they’re carried out by competent people, you know? And I’m not overly impressed by people putting on too much of a show.

For example, if I compare the 3 Bring Me the Horizon gigs I’ve been to, I liked the first one the best, the one without all the screens and the arena-size venue. Because the setlist was better and I liked that they were lit from behind. It was a nice effect. I like simple things.

Track that fell off the setlist for the arena tour:

What was the worst show you’ve ever been to?

Erm. I could argue Being as An Ocean because I left after two songs, but I wasn’t there primarily to see Being as an Ocean so that’s a bit unfair. And the main reason for leaving was I was dead tired.

So I’m going to argue 30 Seconds to Mars mainly because:

  1. I still feel Jared is acting the part.
  2. Fine, invite people on stage, but don’t fucking spend 15 minutes picking the exact people to come up. It doesn’t make for a good show.
  3. Bringing out the acoustic guitar. Just nooooo. I’m not saying it’s bad per se, it’s just not my cup of tea.

When they started picking people out of the crowd I left because that’s just where I draw the line.

And anyway. They’d already played The Kill.

Absolutely not seeing them again. No matter how much I love The Kill.

What is the most musically involved you have ever been?
Let’s just say I haven’t been.

What show are you looking forward to?
Deaf Havana
! Brighton!

Also desperately hoping Stray from the Path will add Casey to their UK/Europe tour. It’s extremely unlikely, but my brain is all Capsize is on the bill! They played last time I saw Casey, so maybe!?!??

Yeayea, I’ve got a hangup.

What is your favorite band shirt?

Mmm. Either my Manson one or the Bring Me one.

What musician would you like to hang out with for a day?

I’m not sure I’d want that? What would we do? Go for vegan eats in Glasgow? OH I KNOW. Glasvegas’ Jonna. Because she hangs out in Glasgow. And is from Norrland. I.e. supercool.

And she plays the piano in addition to drums standing. I don’t know how you could be cooler than that?

Who is one musician or group you wish would make a comeback?

I don’t really listen a lot to any band that doesn’t exist right now. I mean there’s My Chemical Romance, but unlike the rest of the world, it’s not something I crave. Don’t get me wrong, I love them, but I don’t need them to make a comeback. There are other bands.

Also. I used to want Panik back. They’ve recently made a comeback of sorts. And. I’m not happy about it. It makes me sad.

Because. This:

I don’t understand it.

Who is one band/artist you’ve never seen live but always wanted to?

I’m going to have to say Nine Inch Nails, aren’t I?

Surely there will be a European tour eventually?

Name four or more flawless albums.

Actually flawless and in I wouldn’t skip a single song? Live Through This by Hole, Lost Forever // Lost Together by Architects and All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us by the same band and Deaf Havana’s All These Countless Nights.

Almost made the list: Relief Through Release by Tura Satana. That goddamn Nirvana cover, cannot stand it. Let the Ocean Take Me; the outro of Never Alone makes me cringe, ditto last track of Thrice’s To Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere.

How many concerts have you been to in total?
Not that many in my opinion. Can’t be bothered to count though.

Who have you seen the most live?

Architects. Five times. Which in my opinion isn’t that many. But it depends on your frame of reference I guess.

What is your favorite movie soundtrack?
Trouble Every Day by Tindersticks. It’s on this compilation:

What was your last musical ‘phase’ before you wisened up?
Before I fell into this black hole of post-hardcore type music (it’s what last.fm tells me I to listen to, OK?), I was listening to a lot of singer-songwriter type music, i.e. lots of Richard Hawley, Iain Morrisson, the National, Tindersticks, you know, nice music that doesn’t ask a lot of its listener. I still listen to it, just not as much.

What is your ‘guilty pleasure’ that you hate to admit liking?
I tend to only feel guilty about what ever I’m obsessively listening to at the time, i.e. I feel more guilty about the amount than the actual performer. Except for. I currently feel zero percent guilty that I’m listening to Amity as if there are no other bands.

Think we’ve established I do feel slightly guilty about listening to Korn though. Because they are not with the feminist agenda and I find that problematic.

I obviously tag hitherdither. Anyone else up for a rant about music? I’ll tag you!

October blog challenge 2016 part 1 of 5

Lise is doing this challenge, which seemed like fun so I thought I’d join.

While I have no concerns what so ever about spamming your feed (Hello, Captain Obvious here, how can I help you?), since October is already well on its way and since I’ve got posts planned for..well most days to be honest, it’s going to be a weekly affair.

Today we’re going through 1–7.

bat
ONE. October goals

I don’t do goals. I am severely uninterested in competition and thusly goals. You have no idea the extent to which the line WE’RE GOING NOWHERE appeals to me. I’m just pure impulse. No, it’s not great. But you know, people don’t change (Nick Cave says, so it must be true); I’ve long since accepted that this is who I am.

Not that I’m not aware I should have goals, I’m sure I should structure my workouts, work on finding a job that doesn’t bore the life out of me, drink less tea, practice mindfulness, just make a goddamn effort in all sorts of areas in order to reach one destination or another…but what’s the fun in that?

TWO. OOTD

Today is Sunday, this is my standard uniform for weekends:

final1475913987759.jpg
leggings // over-sized tee // over knee socks + warmer pair socks

castle

THREE. Story behind my blog name

Weeellll..to paraphrase one of my fave bands when asked about their name; it leaves all doors open. If they wanted to start crooning, they could. I.e., if I wake up tomorrow and feel the urge to croon, I could. Or you know, write about people who croon. It’s just a name with no particular connotations.

…let’s pretend it wasn’t just pure lack of imagination. And lack of goal. Do I have to specify I’ve pretty much no idea what I’m doing? I have no idea what I’m doing. OK. There.

cat

FOUR. Who inspires you

Lots of people inspire me all the time. Because I’m easily distracted and excel at the art of being a fangirl.

Currently, a main inspiration is Roxane Gay. I’ve just read her Bad Feminist and I find her ideas and writing truly inspiring. Almost makes me want to embark on an academic career. Almost. What stops me: knowing that with this type of writing that I do, you’re not meant for academia. Also, kinda think you need to be goal oriented to do academia. ALSO, just spoke to someone doing a licentiate this very week, he wasn’t exactly raving about it.

Getting off track as per usual…

In general, I’m quite inspired by people who dare to be different and who have a bit of a oh fuck it attitude. Oh and bitter and angry feminists in general. They are my heroes, the lot of them.

FIVE. 5 things about you

  1. I have the worst blood circulation; I live in a pretty much constant state of freezing.
  2. I live in fear of people with social skills trying to engage me in conversation. Social morons like myself is fine; I can carry on a conversation with people like that. Mostly. But with people who expect certain things out of a conversation, I’m just going to disappoint, making one and all uncomfortable. They’ve got themselves to blame tho, there is nothing about me that reads open for conversation.
  3. You know when you call some sort of service function and you get to talk to someone who’s positively hostile and you’re left wondering just WTF that person is doing working there? Yeah. Hi. That’s me.
  4. I’m deeply offended by the following assumptions:
  • That I drink coffee.
  • That I don’t eat bread (i.e. trying to avoid carbs and for the record NO, I ♥ carbs).
  • That I like Disturbed. Or Metallica for that matter.
  • That Pinterest thinks I’m interested in Johnny Depp. I’m sure he’s a lovely fellow, but he’s as irrelevant to me as I am to him, you know? Now give me pics of ppl in metalbands! Or at least Oli Sykes. Please?
  • That I don’t know In Flames. I ♥ In Flames, OK?
  1. I still dream of having TRez’s shoulder muscles, you know, the ones in the Hurt video. It’s not a goal; is a completely unrealistic dream.

web

SIX. Thankful Thursday

I find this being thankful thing quite difficult. It’s too positive. I’m not overly fond of positive. I much prefer bitter and negative; shocking right?! You never saw that coming, never heard it before.

Also. Who am I supposed to thank, really?

Let’s just say. At this moment in time, I feel fortunate that I am in a position to lead a fairly comfortable life, that I’m happy with where I’m living, that my work allows me time off at any sort of random time, which enables me to see bands play. I also feel fortunate that I don’t consider the fact that I’m really too old for this type behavior a problem at all.

Again, who am I thanking? The Fates..? I’d be OK with the Fates.

SEVEN. A day in life

GOOD MORNING. Matching my socks with me eye make; giving the terrible shorts another shot at proving themselves. POSITIVE my neighbors are thrilled about my choice of music at this hour, starting the day with some Architects; Alpha Omega.

final1475830119810

ON THE BUS. Last few pages of Roxane Gay + The Amity Affliction keeps me company.

final1475830001352

BREAKFAST. At work. What a sad affair. But hey, I’ve got raspberries, banana and a cup of good herbal. Listening to Editors.

final1475829919890

SLOW START. Trying to get some proofing done. Giving Helios a go. It’s not bad.

final1475829859924

STARING AT CREDIT TRANSFER. You want to transfer credits from the course you’re currently taking to well, the course you’re currently taking. YOU CAN’T TRANSFER CREDITS ON THE SAME COURSE. How am I the only person getting that?!!?? Course coordinator already OK:ed the application so now I’m going to have to sort this shit out. Playlist returned to default and is playing me Architects again.

final1475829778676

MIXING TEA, WAITING FOR TEXT TO PROOF. First cup of the day (herbal doesn’t count). This corner of my desk, it’s the focal point of my workday. Gawd the exciting life I lead. Playlist has found me some of the Editor’s latest release. Will have to make an effort soon.

final1475830711494

LUNCH. What will it be!?! Exciting! Grabbed the last frozen meal I had in my freezer no idea what it is. Fingers crossed it’s not just chickpeas.

final1475838384279.jpg

Score! Roasted broccoli, pureed aubergine, kidney beans and pasta. Spent rest of lunch hour searching HappyCow for places to eat in Gothenburg.

AFTERNOON. No internet, more tea, message from person with text that it’s not coming after all (editing is taking longer than expected he says, me: really), listening to Balance & Composure, because a certain singer in a certain band just tweeted that they were good. It’s a bit of hit and miss, sometimes he’s spot on sometimes…we just don’t have the same taste at all. This is not bad, but for the time being, I’ve got other preferences.

The afternoon wasn’t completely wasted, found a recipe for bean pesto. Bean pesto! Genius stuff. Not that I’m going to follow a recipe, but I’ll do something similar.

LEFT WORK EARLY. Had taken stock of my knits the night before and decided that I could use a couple more. Threw some money at a store that wasn’t H&M for a change.

final1475869095189

BUS HOME. Liv Strömquist’s latest comic book keeping me company. Might have been some more listening to a certain band starting with an A. Starting to feel like a guilty pleasure it is.

final1475869006396

FORCED MYSELF TO MAKE DINNER. This week has been impossible. Dinner has been raw veggies + Ryavita all week because cooked meal, who can stand it!? Today my brain was all about the peas. It wanted nothing but peas. Finally convinced it pasta + peas + some asparagus + half an avocado and cabbage roasted in mustard was a good idea. The wine was also quite good.

final1475869209444

CLEANING. Was a bit lazy and only cleaned half the apartment while listening to Thrice on loud, lifting weights in between.

WATCHED LAGGIES. And then I was off to bed.

PS. If anyone knows why it’s called Laggies and/or what that means, feel free to inform me. I’m. Confused.

The Blog List

This is a list I’ve copied (well, obvs. copied → translated) from lugnochfin.se, who copied it from someone else… I’ll be honest, I’m only doing this list as a way to get some blog recommendations out of you. Yes you. And, yes, I’m looking for more blogs to follow!

To truly test your patience, I give you

The Blog List

How many blogs do you read?

I follow well over a hundred blogs, some via WordPress and some via Bloglovin. But tbh, most of them I don’t actively read.

How do you read blogs?

I read blogs throughout the day, on most days. If I’m able to go online and not busy.

Mostly I read blogs in the Bloglovin feed or the WordPress Reader. If a post is fairly interesting I’ll go to the original post.

Big thumbs up for Bloglovin and Wordpress Reader tho; I’ve stopped reading blogs I can’t follow in either.

What are some of the things you like about a blog?

I’m addicted to personality, subjective views, off-hand feminist comments, blogs that are quirky and funny; I’m mostly unimpressed by the standard formats, both in terms of layout and posts. I love enthusiastic and witty blogs, blogs where the writer has spent time on language and clearly had a reader in mind. And a pretty blog, there is nothing like a pretty blog. By which I mean simple, uncluttered layout, easy to read.

I actually like (read: love) amateur blogs. I’m nosy and mostly just want to know about people’s lives really. I want a blog to read more or less like a story.

Bottom line: if there is a lack of personal context I’ll quickly get bored.

What are some of your favorite blogs?

Rhian Westbury; she mixes a number of things I’m interested in, and because she not only writes about her music consumption (frequently about going to gigs), but because said music is the kind of music I also like. Yea, I’m simple like that.

flickpingis.se; Swedish lifestyle blog. I like it because she keeps her posts short and sweet; when she posts pics there’s a point to them and her narration is at times hilarious. Don’t underestimate the power of narration I say!

Oh So Sensitive + lugnochfin; two blogs, same creator, Oh So is in English and about being introvert; lugnochfin is in Swedish and about creativity, blogging and digital entrepreneurship. These are the finest looking blogs I know of. Such a pleasure to read!

Brita Zackari; another Swede. Again, short, to the point, funny, and with a mixed content. I do like the mixed content.

Fave food blog?

I’ve stopped following pure food blogs as a step in my shake this pesky binge eating behavior, but it used to be Cookie + Kate. Looking at it now makes me realize this is one of my all-time fave blogs. The layout is spot on, the content is not only well thought out, the actual food is right up my street. Not that I follow recipes, but it’s excellent inspiration.

Fave home decor blog?

I used to read home decor blogs. But then I woke up one day and suddenly realized that I was mostly reading them thinking OMFG HAMLET, DOES IT LOOK LIKE I CARE? I like home decor, sure, but I want it in a context, not just oh here’s a pretty picture of a pretty dresser and another, and another ad infinitum.

Love inclusion of home decor as a feature in blogs not focusing on decor tho!

Fave fashion blog?

Not so much for the fashion, more like personal style. And H&M in general. Oh and blogs where the blogger is like Oh hey, by the way, this is what I wore today or Here’s some bits I got from Primark the other day, while not generally focusing on clothes at all.

Humour blog?

Oh I’d love to follow some funny blogs! Suggestions?

Beauty blog?

Linda Hallbergs sminkblogg; despite the fact that she does that which I really hate: English + Swedish in the same post. But then I rarely read, I just like the pics.

Whinar; to no small part because of the Ursula pic in the sidebar. And while it is mainly a beauty blog she also includes bit of lifestyle; I like a bit of a mixed bag.

Guilty pleasure blog?

Zero percent guilt here! I either like a blog or I don’t.

What sorts of blogs do you not read?

I started making a long, loooong list of all the things I dislike. But then I started reviewing it and noticed that I do read blogs that have the features I supposedly dislike. I’m guilty of being completely random. I could follow a blog because of some silly little detail (see below).

But it should be safe to say the following:

  • In general, I avoid blogs where entries are on the long side and no effort has been made to facilitate reading. The blog format, for me, does not lend itself well to long texts.
  • In general, I prefer lifestyle blogs, i.e. blogs that have a mixed content, as opposed to blogs that are extremely focused on one thing. I do tend to grow a bit bored with blogs like that.
  • Blogs that if they were a record would be labelled overproduced by critics I tend to steer away from. I like my blogs a little trashy, a little unprofessional. Gives them character.
  • Blogs that read like a photo album of your and your friends and family. I like words. I mean sure, pics are great, but they should illustrate a point not just Here we are in Rome (x 10,000) or whatever.

Which blog have you followed for the longest time?

Miss West End Girl I’ve probably followed for quite a while now. Mainly because she’s Glasgow-based and I like her fringe. (← one such silly detail that can make me follow a blog.)

I’m still looking for that holy grail, the blog I want to follow for ever and ever.

Blog, Insta, Snapchat or Twitter?

Obvs I’m in love with blogging, thus the daily updating (for which I feel I should apologize, sorry, except for I’m not really sorry). Love Insta and Twitter too tho, but more just to follow other people.

Fave blogger on Twitter?

Lily Melrose and Helen Anderz. (Sort of cheating calling them bloggers, but they do blog. Sometimes.)

Fave blogger on Instagram?

In addition to the two mentioned above, Linda Hallberg.

Fave blogger on Pinterest?

I don’t follow any bloggers on Pinterest that I’m aware of. Should I be?

Fave blogger on Snapchat?

I’ve yet to find something that makes me want to try Snapchat.

To which category would you say your blog belongs?

Lifestyle.

Juiciest memory from the world of blogging?

Can we count Insta too? Can we talk about Oliver Sykes? No? In that case I’ve got nothing.

What would you like more of in the blogging community?

Personality + personal context, daring in the form of maybe not sticking to the standard format, a better mix of complete randomness and regularity. General silliness is also a fave.

But mostly I just want more blogs on pop culture from a less serious and more subjective perspective.

Is blogging dying?

I sure hope not!

Feel free to fill out this list on your blog! And let me know if you do, I’d love to know your thoughts on this.
