The zzZzz list

At what time do you go to bed?
About ten, usually. I feel the need to defend this, because it tends to be considered ridiculously early.

In my defense, according to research, ten is a good time to go to bed. You’ve got hormones just waiting for you to hit the sack at this very time, so that they can start doing…whatever it is hormones do at night. Repairing things? I stopped paying attention after the lecturer confirmed the time I go to bed anyway is the right time. It’s also the right time if you consider sleeping cycles.

Sometimes I go to bed even earlier. If a. I’m cold or b. I’m falling asleep on the couch. Maybe I just like to sleep?

At what time do you wake up?
My alarm is set to 5.45, but I usually wake up around 5 on work days. On weekends, I’m super happy if I can keep my eyes shut until at least 6.30.

Are you a morning person?
It’d be really bad if I wasn’t. My behavior would make absolutely no sense.

What type of bed do you have?
A nothing special 120 cm from IKEA. I’ve had it for about 10 years now and it’s still not causing me any troubles (i.e. back pain, poor sleep). Probably shouldn’t have said that… What I do miss when it comes to my bed is a headboard. I kid you not when I say I’ve been looking for a headboard since the day I bought the damn thing. There are nice looking headboards, but not for my size bed. Maybe that’s a reason to get a new bed?

What’s on your bedside table?
I don’t have one. Because I don’t need it. When I go to bed I put the phone next to or under the pillow, and sometimes I bring a pair of headphones. If I’m expecting to be waking up or having difficulties sleeping, to keep myself entertained while I toss and turn.

Which is the best song for falling asleep?
I am of the opinion that there is no such thing. BUT. If you can’t fall asleep because of outside noise, I would say, try listening to Architects. Two latest records. It is literally the only thing that will cancel out any outside noise, it’s just a wall of sound nothing can penetrate. It’s helped me with the sleep in the past.

I would also say, listening to a book is a much better option. Might make you fall asleep even if the book is interesting and you have no plans on falling asleep.

How do you sleep? Really?
I was going to say not bad, but the past few days haven’t been great. I keep waking up between three and four and I can’t go back to sleep. I’ve accepted this is how it is, sometimes you just don’t sleep well.

What do you wear to bed?
Mostly, PJs of this model:

final1475937697370 Oh and in the winter: socks. At least one pair. At my parent’s two pairs, plus a warm-ish long-sleeve of some sort.

Bed hair?
I’ve got different ideas about this. Currently I’m just leaving it be.

What do you do in the middle of the night?
When I drink a lot of tea, getting up to pee is just inevitable. (A lot is apparently more than 1 large cup for me. Life is so unfair…)

How do make your bedroom cozy?
Same way you make any space cozy; good dim lighting, comfortable furniture, dark wallpaper. You don’t really need much more than that. Then again, what do I know. This is my bedroom and it’s just the way I like it. And I’m moving to a white bedroom. In July. Boo.

What’s the weirdest place you’ve woken up?
I don’t really wake up weird places. Not even weird places in the bed. I wake up as planned. I’m in charge here, aren’t I?

How do you make your bed?
Mostly I don’t. But I do have a couple of extra pillows to thrown on when I do. (I do now, at the time of the above picture, I only had the two.)

What’s your best tip for a good night of sleep?
Find some way to shut down your brain. This could mean different things for different people and at different times of your life.

What do you do in bed before falling asleep?
Nothing. Unless you count turning my phone face down.

The Beauty Tag

◊ This post is inspired by Lise, who did the Beauty Tag a while back ◊

1. Do you remember your first makeup item?
Not really. I mean it was an eyeliner, I know that for sure. But brand or where I got it; not a single clue. (No, I did not steal it from my mother; she doesn’t wear a trace of makeup, never has.)

2. Describe your perfect mascara. Have you found one that fits your specifications?
I love mascaras that give you the spider legs. But they also need to work with sensitive eyes and be cruelty free. My current MUA Eye Define Nourish & Care is close, but I’d like it to be thicker. I’d like to think the Maybelline Great Lash was all that I wanted, but a. not cruelty free and b. it’s been a long time since last I tried, could be remembering it wrong.

3. What kind of coverage do you prefer from a foundation?
Medium. Full coverage would make no sense for me, partly because of how I do my makeup (grungy, always grungy) and partly because it is true full coverage is a struggle when you’re closer to 40 than 30. Actually, I’m considering going with a light coverage. Recommendations? Preferably one that doesn’t oxidize about 10 shades like my current one. Nightmare…

4. Favourite high end brand?
I’m going to have to say Urban Decay because I’m loving both the Naked foundation and concealer. But I do want to mention that I don’t love everything they put out. I actually genuinely like budget brands, not just because they’re cheap.

5. What cosmetics brands have you always wanted to try but still haven’t?
There are no brands I dream about, but I would like to try the Too Faced Peach Perfect foundation. Might be too cheap though.

6. Favourite drugstore brand?
I have a favorite brand for different products. For eyeshadow palettes Makeup Revolution, for blushes NYX, for mascara and highlighter MUA.

7. Do you wear false lashes?
Nope. I’ve accepted my eyes are too sensitive. And anyway, it doesn’t look good on me. It looks too fake.

8. Is there any kind of makeup you can’t leave the house without?
I can leave the house fine without any makeup. But I like to wear makeup to work. And when I do wear makeup, I like to wear all of it. I can’t do the just a bit of mascara, or just bit of blush. It’s all or nothing.

9. What is your most cherished beauty product?
I don’t think I have one. They’re consumables, what’s there to cherish?

10. How often do you shop for makeup? Do you like to pick up an item here and there, or get lots of goodies at once?
I always intend to do one big shop a month. Or, the aim is always to not get that many things, just a few necessary bits. This is rarely the case. It’s more like…3–4 times a month. And far from all of it is “necessary”. (Necessary: products I’ve run out of, not products I can’t live without. But I can’t even stick to that; I tend to have multiple foundations, blushes, mascaras, etc. Which is fine! If that’s what you want, but I don’t want a lot of things. Something I seem to forget soon as I enter a store.)

11. Do you have a “beauty budget” or do you spend freely?
I do have a budget, but I’m not great at sticking to it. And that’s with quite a sizable budget too, considering my income. I’m working on it.

12. Do you utilize coupons, reward cards and sales when you shop for cosmetics?
Yes, yes I do. Most recently, I used the Body Shop 3 for 2 deal, bought me three Camomile Cleansing Butters. Yup.

I don’t necessarily think that deals and rewards actually saves me any money. Because I’ve noted that deals always end with getting one more product than planned, i.e. in the end spending more than planned. Except for Superdrug offers, that’s always a case of me going to the till and being told I can have one more of a certain item because it’s free based on the other products already in my basket. Superdrug has the best deals.

13. What type of product do you buy the most of?
As in what, over a period of time or what product I end up having hordes of, or what type product I run out of often? I have hordes of eyeshadows, but that’s the nature of eyeshadows I feel.

14. Is there a brand you absolutely can’t stand?
There are lots of brands I can’t stand. Brands whose design is cluttered, brands that genuinely make shitty products, brands that test on animals, brands that treat their employees badly. Give me enough time and I’ll have a reason to hate all brands, and that’s the day I’ll stop buying makeup. Can’t be too long now.

But let’s name a few I wouldn’t buy from even if they were cruelty free: Rimmel, Revolon, Bourjois, Max Factor, YSL, Lancome, Estee Lauder (can’t even be bothered with the spelling, that’s the level of dislike). Because ugly. Because there are other brands. Because boring.

15. Do you avoid certain ingredients in cosmetics, like parabens or sulfates?
I do try to avoid PFOS, and products for hair where alcohol is listed as one of the first ingredients, and I do sometimes try to steer clear of silicone. But I’m not consistent when it comes to this either. I’m consistently inconsistent. Depends on my mood and if I can be bothered to read the label.

16. Do you have a favorite place to shop for makeup?
Not really, I like to spread it evenly between Superdrug, Boots, Lyko, Eleven and H&M.

17. Do you like trying new skin care products or do you keep a certain routine?
I do have a routine, but I do also like to try new things.

18. Favourite bath and body brand?
Had to go to the bathroom to check. I don’t seem to have one. I’ve got approx 1-2 products from Lush, the Body Shop, Apoliva and ACO. I clearly like them equally.

19. If you could only buy from one brand, which brand would you choose?
Are we talking skincare or or we talking makeup? If makeup, I’d probably go with NYX actually. If skincare, Paula’s Choice. Provided unlimited budget obvs. I dream of being a ACO person tho. It would mean being a true minimalist. (Not yet accepted the fact that I’m not a minimalist.)

20. What brand do you think has the best packaging?
As in packaging that works the best or that I like to look at? I like Sleek, because is sleek, and v. black. But I want to mention one packaging I think is highly functional I’d say this one:

I like it plain, simple, not a lot of fuzz, not a lot of color. Which is part of the reason budget brands appeal to me…anything that looks like it was designed by IKEA, that’s what I like.

Few examples of actual real-life favorite packaging:

I like dark bottles, vegan label a plus, the simplicity and clarity of Lush packaging and I’m a sucker for anything with drawn on florals. Least favorite: swirly type, cluttered, stereotypically feminine and photos. Hate photos.

21. Which celebrity always has great makeup?
Gwen Stephanie…?
I’d say Marilyn Manson but he doesn’t always wear makeup. Unfortunately.

When it comes to makeup I’m far more impressed with YouTubers than celebrities. I do like Beth Ditto’s makeup, but she doesn’t always have great makeup, as in, there are pictures of her when she’s a sweaty mess, which, by the way, I don’t think is wrong at all.

22. Do you belong to any online makeup communities?

23. 5 Favourite beauty gurus:
I’m just going to say one: itslikelymakeup.

She’s a beauty guru, right?

24. Do you like multi-functional products like lip and cheek stains?
Nah, but I do use regular products as multi-functional products.

25. Are you clumsy in putting on makeup?
Is it just me or is this sentence..a but wonky? I do tend to get mascara on my upper lid, and sometimes I get to work and find a sprinkling of eyeshadow fallout on my cheeks. (Not to worry, I have a brush in my makeup bag for this very reason.) But that is also a case of me putting on my makeup without contacts in and being half blind.

What I am more than clumsy is forgetful and in possession of a oh well whatever attitude. This morning, for example, I was going to put some cream around my eyes. Reach for a tube, start to squeeze content out stare at it in confusion; that ain’t no eye cream!? It was the serum, same brand, only slightly larger tube. Didn’t want to waste it, figured it’d do just this one time. But let me tell you NO, IT WON’T. A serum does in no way have the hydration my eye area needs.

Topped that off with my most drying concealer. It’s a good fucking day today. But then it’s right in line with the rest of this miserable week. Jag orkar fan inte mer…

26. Do you use makeup base/primer for the eyes?
YES. I am oily of complexion and I need it. Both type primers were game-changes for me; I was walking around with foundation and eyeshadow barely hanging on to my skin for years, thank god for primers!

27. How many hair products do you use on a typical day?
On a typical day, none. On days when I wash my hair, I use shampoo, 2 types of conditioner, a root product, a hair oil and heat protection. I do sometimes use dry shampoo and sometimes hair spray, but not often.

28. What do you apply first, concealer or foundation?
Concealer. I hear it’s wrong but I’ve tried it the other way around, didn’t like it.

29. Would you ever consider taking makeup classes?
The short answer is no. I mean could, but to do my own makeup? Hardly necessary.

30. What do you love about makeup?
That it can make me look even more unapproachable and angry.

5 lists about 5 things

5 things I often say

Men ALLTSÅ. (By which I mean But REALLY.)
Are you kidding? (To things that don’t work as expected. Such as office door that won’t unlock. Because it’s computerized. Have to stick my key in lock approx. 20 times. This happens multiple times a week. Lots of fun!)
Also (…you might have noticed…)
Go vegan? (People around me keep saying stupid stuff that would be solved by going vegan, sooo...)
◊ Dom får fan skylla sig själv. (Their own damn fault. Except for it’s not grammatical.)

5 things I often think

◊ How am I ever going to get through a workout?
Oh my god is it never ending??
◊ Just another // insert number here // minutes.
◊ I need a glass of wine. And then I think about what an absolute waste of money that is leading to hardly ever having wine or any type alcohol anymore. I’ll get over it. Eventually.
◊ Do they have to be that loud?

5 things I dream about at night

◊ Not being able to hear what people say to me. This is what happens if you fall asleep with headphones and music blaring. You don’t hear the music, but it still prevents hearing what people in dreams say. It’s weird.
◊ Going to gigs. In general, I dream a lot about the people who make the music I listen to, not just gig situations. E.g dreamed Oli Sykes worked at my local grocery store. To mention on thing that makes sense in writing…
◊ Absurd work situations. Like. I dream about people at work and situations that are clearly based in things that have happened at work, but the things people say and do are just insane. Probably my least favorite dreams. They’re just really, really boring.
◊ Hair and teeth falling out.
◊ I’ve repeatedly dreamed I’m in Brighton and can’t escape tidal waves.

5 things I order abroad

◊ Cocktails. Because they’re always way cheaper than in Sweden, feels like a bargain you can’t refuse.
◊ Pot of tea. Because you can when you’re in the UK. Not that common in Sweden.
◊ Scones. Again, way easier in the UK than in Sweden.
◊ Soup. This probably has to do with having both lunch and dinner out and wanting something lighter for lunch. This is never the case in Sweden. If it was I might order soup. I guess.
◊ Pimm’s?

5 things I wish would happen before the end of the year

◊ Glasvegas releases a record and announces a tour.
◊ Someone drags me along to Glasgow, and I don’t have to do any planning at all for it.
◊ New Thrice record?
◊ 6th book in Johanne Hildebrandt’s Valhalla saga?
◊ Be hit with some sort of mad obsession. It’s been a while now, I need something new to make life fun again.

In which I treat an award like a tag

The lovely Lise has nominated me for two awards, thanks love!

If you’ve been around here before, you know I like to treat awards like tags. Except I don’t tag people.

Apparently, I like any excuse to answer random questions. I guess?

One of the awards, the Mystery Blogger Award, asks you to list three things about yourself.

I’ve thought about this, a disproportionate amount of time, and decided that there are no three things I can tell you about myself that you don’t already know.

I’ve gone and on about how I love tea and sauvignon blanc, I still have a very unbecoming Architects fixation, I work at a uni, I’ve got a degree in translation, I’m super interested in hormones and menstruation, I consider feminists to be some of the funniest people there is, my favorite book is Dirty Weekend, I’ve lived outside Glasgow, I’m kinda embarrassed that I love Dead by April, I think Throne should be on all playlists for all workout classes everywhere, I’ve got such poor eyesight I’m practically blind without glasses or contacts, I consider German and Finnish the most beautiful languages (if I hear another word about French…), blah blah blah; can’t think of anything I haven’t already put in this here blog.

The second part of the award is to answer a number of questions from the person who nominated you. Funfunfun!

Lise’s questions

What is on your bucket list this year?

*googles what is bucket list*

Oh that. I don’t have that. Let’s make one!

◊ Learn to lift heavy things. Like this:

A post shared by Sara (INTE SANDRA) Dahlström (@sdahlstrom) on

◊ Dye hair in some green shade.

◊ Get good work ethics.

◊ Go see NIN.

◊ Become minimalist.

◊ Take a photography class.

◊ Learn web design.

◊ Learn to play For Every Step on the piano.

◊ Take up running.

◊ Give Berlin another chance.

◊ Go to Wales.

It is a shame I know myself well enough to know I’m not going to be doing any of these things.

Have you ever gone out with someone you didn’t really want to but ended up hitting it off anyways?
I don’t hit it off with many people, because I’m socially awkward. I have spent time with people I didn’t particularly care for (probably says more about me than them), but hitting it off is really a stretch. I don’t have chemistry with people, in general. So that’s a no then.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
Oh dear, this quickly turned into a work interview? Having goals I suppose would be a good thing. But because I don’t, things are unlikely to change much. Unless the university decides to make changes. Such as move its operation to Östersund. That’d be fun🙃

And so like them.

Don’t get me wrong, Östersund is a beautiful place, far more beautiful than both where I currently live and where I’m moving to, but it’s even colder. I can’t take that. (Gawd I should never have written that down. Yes HI I’m a big believer in jinxing.)

Do you see yourself as dependable?
I see myself as predictable, which isn’t exactly the same thing but there’s a certain overlap. By which I mean there are certain situations where I will be dependable because my behavior is very predictable (it’d be so easy to kidnap me), but there are also some situations where you can’t count on me for shit.

If the world ended tomorrow, what would be your proudest achievement before we all went?
That I’ve managed to somehow pull through years of going to uni and acquired a Master’s degree, despite the fact that I am such an ill fit for university studies. It’s like I don’t understand the concept. Why do you want to write this way? What is the point of what we’re doing? Why are you asking me to do this, it makes literally no sense? In what way does this connect to the real world? What is the practical use of this?

What I’m saying is that university is too abstract for me; what I needed, and I wish someone would have told me, is a more practical sort of education. But then, at least in Sweden, there aren’t a lot of educations like that. Maybe one of a zillion reason the Swedish education system is in quite the crisis?

Now, I’ve got 5 questions for you:

ONE. Who is your favorite YouTuber and why?

TWO. What is your current obsession?

THREE. Name one weird reason you’ve unfollowed a blog/Instagram/Twitter account!

FOUR. Best hand lotion ever?

FIVE. Which era Marilyn Manson is your favorite?

100 truths

1. What’s your name?
*points to blog heading*

2. Any nicknames or aliases?
The whole point of my name, according to my parents, is to not be given any nicknames. Successful strategy apparently?

3. Where do you live?
The cold part of Sweden.

4. Your star sign?
Libra. I feel more like a Virgo tho.

5. How old are you?
36! What? It’s a good age to be. I’m 100% sure 40s is going to be better still.

6. Your relationship status?
Unattatched. Unapproachable. I’m just a really hostile person.

7. Any children?
God no, I can barely take care of myself.

8. Any pets?
Can I count my parent’s kitties? They practically mine? Or the other way around… Counts? Yes? No?

9. Any tattoos or piercings?
I’ve got some extra holes in my ears, but that would be another thing that doesn’t really count.

10. What do you like about yourself?
I’m super independent, an excellent planner and kind to animals.

11. What do you dislike about yourself?
I lack any type goals and I’m sometimes prone to extreme indecisiveness (and that’s how you end up with every piece of clothing in at least three different colors…).

12. Righty or lefty?
Is this an interesting question? Really? More interesting: my hand writing is sometimes illegible to myself. Although also not quite in the realm of interesting. I’m quite good at crocheting rugs. Getting there?

13. The last thing you drank?
Water. Oddly enough. It’s usually a cup of herbal this time of day.

14. The last thing you ate?
A piece of baked banana oatmeal I’m pretending is a bread.

15. Your last phone call?
I talked to mom this morning. The cat isn’t well. Still waiting to hear back.

16. Your last text message?
It reads: OK! Exciting stuff!?!

17. Your last email?
Er. It also reads OK! Someone was giving me a status update on a text I’m supposed to review. Should have been “on my desk” last week. I for one am starting to worry about deadline, apparently no the writer though. SIGH.

18. The last song you listened to?
I’m listening to Lost Forever // Lost Together by Architects, currently on track 10. It’s an Architects kind of day.

19. The last book you read?
I’m sneaking peeks at Bright-Sided as we speak. Last book I finished, however, was Har du PMS, eller? [English: Are you PMS-ing?]

20. The last time you cried?
One Day still makes me cry every. single. time. Not for the obvious reasons. But because Emma deserved better. Aaand it’s first day of my period and I nearly cried before even picking up when mom called. It was 8 in the morning. She would not call at 8 in the morning unless something’s wrong.

21. The last blog you read?
Curiouser and curiouser.

22. The last person you spoke to?
I called some guy doing a job in my apartment on Thursday.

23. The last place you visited?
My parent’s house.

24. Your last holiday abroad?
Brighton in November last year.

25. Have you ever gotten back with an ex?

26. Have you ever been cheated on?
Yes. I’m kinda thinking most of us have been sooo..not a very interesting question?

27. Have you ever cheated on someone?
No. Though not out of the kindness of my heart (a.k.a. ethical reasons), I just lack interest in people in general. I will be the first one to admit that this is a flaw and quite inconvenient.

28. Have you ever lost someone special to you?
What do you mean by special? Every cat we’ve ever lost I would say is special to me, but I’m thinking that’s not. Something I should. Let anyone know?

29. Have you ever been so drunk you threw up?
Mm yes. My initial relationship with alcohol wasn’t great. Took me a while to catch on to what was an appropriate amount of alcohol for me. I think I’ve mastered it now. Maybe. Why I don’t just not drink? I’m a much nicer person when I drink. Also, wine is tasty.

30. Have you ever fallen out of love with someone?
I am not entirely sure I have fallen in love with someone so I’m going with no.

31. Have you ever met someone who changed you?
In a profound way? Not that I can remember?

32. Have you ever been in a situation where you found out who your real friends are?
What is this real friends business? Must be something for people understands this whole social Spiel?

33. Have you ever kissed someone you probably shouldn’t have?
I wouldn’t say probably I would say maybe. Oh, OK! I know I shouldn’t have, but in the big picture, it made literally no difference. And anyway, if presented with the opportunity to kiss someone from the Farao Islands you probably should, if for no other reason than it’s a pretty rare opportunity.

34. Have you ever found out people were talking about you behind your back?
Yes. It was quite unnecessary really because I agreed with them completely. Morons.

35. Have you ever broken someone’s heart?

36. Have you ever kissed a stranger?
There are a lot of people who are practically strangers.

37. Have you ever had your own heart broken?
Given previous answers, this question clearly makes no sense.

38. Have you ever had sex on the first date?
I’m from Sweden. We don’t date.

39. Have you ever been arrested?
Nope. No. Should that be on my bucket list?

40. Have you ever been attracted to someone that isn’t the gender you usually find attractive?
Sure. Gender has nothing to do with how attractive a person is. The world-view expressed in this question seems a bit dated though..?

41. Have you ever done something you regret?
Oh yes. Plenty. I Still do things I regret. For example, why didn’t I just get an OLD apartment, so that I could have moved in already??? Or a rental? I am so over the commuting it makes me want to die.

42. Have you ever won some money?
You must be confusing me with someone else. I don’t win anything, ever.

43. Have you ever lied to get out of a night out to stay in and watch TV?
I don’t know why I’d lie about it? Also, I don’t watch TV.

44. Have you ever pulled a sickie when you weren’t sick?
At school yes, at work no. We can’t just call in sick where I work, there’s this whole difficult way of reporting and blahblah; I’d just rather go to work even if I’m not feeling great, it’s that difficult.

45. Have you ever binge-watched a series?
Silly question, of course. Is there any other way?

46. Do you believe in yourself?
What do you mean? Do I believe I’m a capable person? Sometimes. Pre-ovulation invincibility.

47. Do you believe in Santa Claus?
…I’m 36 and have no sense of humor..?

48. Do you believe in ghosts?
I want to? It’d be neat.

49. Do you believe in aliens?
It seems stupid to think we’re the only ones.

50. Do you believe in miracles?

51. Do you believe in the power of positive thinking?
1000% no. Not just because I’m a bitter old hag, but experience has taught me that in my world, a negative approach is far faaar better.

52. Do you believe in love at first sight?
Sure why not.

53. Can money make you happy?
Money can make you less miserable.

54. Would you describe yourself as a feminist?
You must be new here. If I had an about page it’d read FEMINIST. But as that is quite clear an about-page seems kinda redundant.

55. Are you pro-life or pro-choice?
You mean do I think women should have the right to decide over their own bodies just like men? What do you think?

56. Do you have strong political beliefs?
If I said no would you believe me?

57. Do you have strong religious beliefs?
Does atheism count?

58. What do you think the most important thing you can give a child is?
A sound ethical ground. Because this society needs it. Also critical thinking.

59. Are you eating anything right now?
Piece of gum. Not as much eating as chewing maybe.

60. Are you drinking anything right now?
Nope. My cup is empty.

61. What are you listening to right now?
ARCHITECTS. We’re now through Lost Forever // Lost Together and back to listening to Cracks in the Earth for the 56th time today. First day of menstruation is great.

62. What are you thinking about right now?
How in the world am I supposed to get through a workout?

63. What are you waiting for right now?
..going to said workout.

64. What are you most excited about right now?
Currently lacking in the excitement department.

65. What’s your pet hate right now?
People. Who talk. Right outside my door. ARE THERE REALLY NO OTHER PLACES FOR YOU TO TALK??

66. What’s your favourite thing right now?
Cracks. In. The. Earth.

67. If you weren’t answering these questions, what would you be doing right now?
Crushing some presumptive student’s hopes and dreams.

68. Your first best friend?
My first best friend was a crappy best friend. But then, if I didn’t deserve it then I probably do now so it all works out.

69. Your first kiss?
Ah yes, that would have been one of them times I was so drunk I threw up. Let’s not go there.

70. Your first celebrity crush?
I want to say someone in Guns N’ Roses..? Or I don’t actually want to say that. Can I lie? It’s basically OK if it was Izzy Stradlin right? Can’t we talk about my most recent celebrity crush instead?! ..or no wait. I also don’t want that. Let’s leave it at Izzy and move on.

71. Your first holiday?
Can’t say. My parents are big fans of travelling around Sweden in the summers, always have been. Somewhere else in Sweden. I used to hate it so much.

72. Your first pet?
Finally! A cat called Fia, was with us for 18 years, survived getting her leg all but cut off by a harvesting machine. I still miss her. I sometimes look for similar cats for adoption. So far not finding any. Which is just as well because what am I even thinking? That it would be the same cat?

73. Your first regret?
Yes. Because people keep numbered lists of regrets?

74. Your first job?
It was more of a “job”. Kindergarten. I have no business being at a kindergarten. I was 15 (I guess?) and it was just a few weeks in the summer.

75. Your first childhood memory?
Well you just gave me my get out of jail free card right there; cannot remember what would be the first childhood memory. I’ll give you a fairly early one: I managed to shut a door on my little brother’s finger, the tip came right off. Go me.

76. Love or money?
Let’s be realistic. You can’t live off of love.

77. Twitter or Facebook?
I’m one of them people who do not and never have used Facebook. Oddly not out of principle, it’s just that it’s so damned ugly. And I’ve heard nothing about it that makes me curious to disregard its awful design.

I do have Twitter. But that’s mostly because it’s a convenient way to follow others.

78. Hook up or relationship?
How about neither?!

79. Dogs or cats?
I think we’ve established I’m a cat person.

80. Coffee or tea?
TEA. Blackblackblack.

needwood tea

81. Beer or wine?
Sauvignon blanc. Or my new fave: Inycon Chardonnay.

82. Sweet or savoury?
Sweet. I’d rather have dessert for dinner than no dessert.

83. Introvert or extrovert?
If I said extrovert, would you believe me?

84. Vampires or werewolves?
Vampires. I’ve taken a class on vampire lit, so you know, ja.

85. Seaside or countryside?
Seaside. Who does not want to be right by the sea??

86. Summer or winter?
FALL. If forced: definitely not winter.

87. Books or movies?
Books. I’ve realized I’m really no that interested in movies. This is a weird realization. What kind of a person does not like movies?

88. Horror or comedy?
Comedy. I used to quite like horror when I was younger. I’m not sure what happened.

89. Do you wish you could change your past?
I don’t actively wish for it, but I also wouldn’t mind. Specifically: if I could have discovered Architects a few years earlier, that would have been great. Round about this time:

Alpha Omega live; fehlst mir. Just saying.

90. What’s your dream job?
Editor. Not the kind of editing I do now though, books would be nice.

91. What’s your guilty pleasure?
Apparently, Dead by April.

92. What are you afraid of?
So many things. Walking alone in the dark. Losing things. Being unprepared. Increased interest resulting in the bank telling me I can’t get the mortgage I need to for my new apartment, so that I won’t be able to move after all, driving in thick mist, on icy roads, in the dark, that people will try to talk to me, that my hair is going to fall out, that my teeth are going to fall out, that I forgot to lock the door, any door—let’s just say I am one anxious person.

93. What was the first thing you wanted to be when you grew up?
This is where that lack of goal thing comes in. I can’t recall actually having wanted be working as anything at all growing up. Who dreams about working, honestly?

94. If you could have any super power, what would it be?
You know the dad in Stephen King’s Firestarter? I’d want that super power. Without the pesky side-effects. I.e. I want to make people believe anything I say. Although I also wouldn’t mind being able to start fires out of thin air. You’d never be cold.

95. If you could change anything about your life what would it be?
My circumstances?

96. Would you want immortality?
Really depends, doesn’t it? Would I continue aging? I.e. am going to spend a hell of a long time being blind? Weak? Shuffling around? See people fuck up our world? If yes then no thanks, I’m good. And anyway. Immortality would be better spent on other people. Such as Naomi Klein. Gudrun Schyman. Or. Could we bring Simone back from the dead?

97. What TV show are you into right now?
I’ve been bingeing Ack Värmland this weekend. Had to defend this choice when talking to my sister. It’s absurd and I like it, OK?

98. Would you say you are happy?
Oh honey no, I am one miserable, miserable person.

99. What one piece of advice would you give to yourself at age eighteen?
GO VEGAN + READ MORE FEMINIST BOOKS + EMBRACE YOUR LACK OF SOCIAL SKILL. (I’d probably beat myself over the head with The Second Sex too.) Shh! That’s one piece.

100. What’s your favourite outfit?
Any outfit that allows lots of movement and keeps me warm and comfortable, that’s a winner. I.e. leggings + hoodie of good length. Black is a good color.

Shuffle the music tag

Third music post in a row, fun innit!? (Well I think it is, suspecting I’m the only one tho, especially since no one called me out on using the wrong goddamn translation in previous post, buuuttttt…I don’t seem to care?)

I was tagged by the lovely Lise over → here, thanks! 🙂

The Rules:
1. Thank the person who nominated you and link to their blog
2. Shuffle your entire music library and talk about the FIRST FIFTEEN songs that come up
3. Mention the songs as well as the artists
4. Tag 7 people or more to do this tag and let them know

As you may know, unless you’re super new here, I do love to rant about the music I listen to. In fact, it is the reason this blog even exists; I was looking for blogs ranting about music, found none, so I had to do it myself.

Still looking. So far no luck, far too few rants about music in my feed. V. disappointing.

That being said, I do encourage you to consider yourself tagged and do this tag! (..and that’s all the tagging I’ll be doing…)

Before we get into the 15 songs, is it at all possible to shuffle your entire music library? I’m genuinely curious.

I for one can’t; my music library consists of a number of different formats so it simply cannot be done.

Theoretically, I could save most of it to Spotify. Most of it. Die Ärzte and my all-time favorite record Relief through Release by Tura Satana never seem to stick. Also, if I’m being honest, and despite the big CD decluttering of 2017, can’t remember all CDs I still own. And then there’s the stuff I have on an external hard drive…I’ve got some interesting things, you know, from back when Napster was a thing.

So what I’ve done is opened Spotify, selected Tracks and shuffled.

Let’s go!

Dead by April; Last Goodbye
Dead by April is what I listen to for some energy, which apparently I haven’t needed lately. Could not have told you what song this was if I tried. Unless you’d settle for catchy metal number? Pop song with a bit of metal added for good measure? You know, typical Dead by April track?

Bear’s Den; The Love we Stole
Er. Yes. Bear’s Den is a new favorite. But so far, I only like their most recent release, the album Red Earth & Pouring Rain. This is from a previous release which I’ve been meaning to remove from my saved tracks because I don’t get it.

Thrice; The Window
This is probably the most anonymous track off of their 2016 release To Be Everywhere is to be Nowhere to me; I need to listen to it to remember it. That being said, the album was one of my favorite releases of 2016. But if I was recommending you a track off of this record, it’d be Black Honey.

In This Moment; Scarlet
Yes, when it comes to In This Moment, I only listen to the hits.

Casey; Cavities
Mentioned just about a zillion times in this here blog before. Not the track maybe but the band. I do love Casey. This track though, is probably not for beginners. I’d say start with Ceremony or Little Bird.

Dead by April; Empathy
I dunno what to say. Your typical Dead by April track, but again, maybe not one I’d recommend. If you’re in the mood for some Dead by, then you might as well, but I wouldn’t add it to any playlist.

The Amity Affliction; Anchors
This is starting to look an awful lot like a list of songs I don’t particularly care for. I love Amity, you know I love Amity, but this track isn’t miserable enough in my opinion. ..which isn’t saying much. I’ve listened to this track at least 64 times, so you know. I don’t hate it.

Dead by April; Abnormal
OK look, Dead by April is v. close to guilty pleasure. It’s not exactly the first band that comes to mind when asked about what music I listen to. I wouldn’t hide it, but I would probably argue that it’s mainly for energy/workout playlists. Truth is I was obsessed for quite a big chunk of time. Still a strange obsession because usually, whatever band you obsess about you want to see play live. Not so with Dead by April. It’s their image. Rubs me the wrong way.

Linkin Park; From the Inside
Just reading the title, I couldn’t tell you what track that is. I mean I recognize the title, but the melody/lyrics is a blank to me. Scrobbled 3 times since 2015. So ja, that would be why.

Korn; Somebody someone
I am starting to question what tracks I’ve saved on Spotify. This is another barely listened to track, scrobbled twice. And I can tell you, if it’s up to me, it’s not going to be scrobbled again.

In Flames; With Eyes Wide Open
Finally! A track I know and love! This one I’ve added to a number of playlists. And can I just say that the album this track is on, Siren Charms, is so underrated.

Recoil; Last Call for Liquid Courage
If I was listing my all-time favorite albums, this album, Liquid, would be on it. I’ve ranted about it before. In case you’re unfamiliar with Recoil, it’s the solo project of Alan Wilder, who used to be in Depeche Mode (who we all wish was still in Depeche, or at least would come back, and soon!). He’s gathered such an incredible group of singers for this record, contributing to its menacing sound. Samantha Coerbell, a spoken word performer, is on vocal duty on this track.

Being as an Ocean; Floating through Darkness
Ah yes, another album love I’ve gushed about before. This is one of the instrumental tracks on the record, simple melody on a piano.

Deaf Havana; St. Paul’s
Now the bells of St. Paul’s ring out in my head—Oh just go listen to it!

Bear’s Den; Agape—Live at Melkweg
Nooo, Spotify, you were on such a roll. Why are you giving me this??

Well, Spotify, that was quite a poor round of shuffling on your part; I take absolutely no responsibility for the results.

..but I might be off to edit my saved tracks…

Skincare tag pt 3

Final part of the skincare tag! Part 1 is here, and part 2 here.

If you had to stick to only one skincare brand, what would it be?

Paula’s Choice has everything you could possibly need, not only your regular creams and cleansers but treatments, the retinol and acids. V. v. important!

A few essentials from Paula’s

If I wasn’t a big believer in the chemicals I’d stick with organic. Products. I actually like using products from different brands and different price ranges. Partly because I like seeing lots of different bottles, tubes and jars on my shelf.

Best spot treatment?

On the one hand. I don’t want to lie. On the other, I don’t want to jinx myself.

Oh hell, my hormones are probably just gathering their forces so it doesn’t matter what I say. They’ll get me in the end.

I don’t really have breakouts. I can have something that is similar to a breakout if I eat a lot of peanut butter (you’d think I’m imagining things, but sadly I’m not), which is a main reason why I’ve stopped, and my favorite primer, Lumene’s mattifying primer, also used to give me something similar to breakouts (but I hear they’ve got a new primer out, v. v. interested in giving it a go!), point is, solution to that is just stop the PB, switch the primer. Oh. Yes. And don’t overdo the wine when on vacation.

Apparently my hormones are super level. (Seems to contradict my PCO status, but whatever.)

Last time I had anything that sort of was reminiscent of a breakout, I would just slap on a good clay mask and it calmed right down. Which is why I find it extremely confusing when people on YouTube talk about clay masks as “drawing out the impurities” and that the mask essentially causes breakouts (???). Never in my life etc.

So my best spot treatment is: just don’t. Don’t have fun and don’t enjoy life and you’ll be fine! 🙂

Favorite step of your skincare routine?

The cleanser step, easy. Because washing off makeup is just about the best feeling there is.

Favorite cleanser combo: the Body Shop camomile cleanser followed by Pixi’s mud cleanser, which I’m growing quite fond of. I only have a small tube to try it out, but I may just have to get the full size. And soon.

What’s on your skincare wishlist?

This could be a post in itself. Let’s do five.

The Ordinary. I keep hearing such good things of this brand, I’m particularly interested in their AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution.

REN. Specifically their Glycolactic radiance renewal mask. It promises to remove dead skin cells, reduce lines and clean out your pores, how can you not be interested in that?

Pixi’s Hydrating Milky Mist. It doesn’t seem to be for my skin type, but I did see someone who is also oily combination say that it was a beautiful primer. I’m in the market for a primer that has more skincare type qualities than just a straight up primer, so maybe this could be an option?

Paula’s Choice. The BHA 9%, which you can’t get in Sweden, which is just beyond annoying. Somebody claimed this is the best thing for your pores, v. v. interested! But I guess I could go for the 10% niacinamide booster, which also targets pores and which is far easier for me to get my hands on.

Neal’s Yard. I’m interested in a long list of their products. High up on the list: their mattifier. They also have a lavender shampoo that I’m kinda keen on, I imagine it’d be like washing your hair with Lush’s Sleepy lotion, and I just want to live in that scent!

This was a terrible idea. I now feel the need to review what I have, to see if maybe there are more things I need.

And we all know where that ends.

Skincare tag pt 1

This is the first part of a tag created by makeupTIA focusing on skincare.

What is your skin type?

Oily combination, on the oily side.

How do you store your skincare?

In my bathroom, like this:

Let me explain. The box might seem kinda redundant, but. I don’t quite have the space I’d like, and because I use all of these bottles regularly, if they weren’t in a box they’d be falling all over the place. This is a temporary solution until I move. I’m hoping for a bigger cabinet/with more shelves, and if that fails, I’m sure IKEA has some smart solution I can install.

The little bowl is where I keep samples. I’m actually quite surprised that the absolute majority of samples I’ve received are in fact cruelty free. Far as I know, I only have one that isn’t cruelty free and that’s a concealer from Clarins. Haven’t decided what to do with that yet.

Favorite ingredient?

Yes. This is where I feel like a newbie. Can I just say acids in general? I like it when it stings.

Most indulgent product?

I have the Paula’s Choice Radiance Renewal Mask. Indulgent because honestly, who needs this mask? But gawd, I loved the results of it.

The Happiness Tag

This tag is slightly overdue as I’ve been away from my desktop. Yeayea, I know it is possible to post via mobile devices but I just cannot be arsed. Too much effort. For me.

I was tagged by Lise, now let’s go!

The rules

  • List five things that makes you happy
  • Share five songs that makes you happy
  • Tag at least five bloggers that makes you happy

Five things

Coming home. I wasn’t far away. I’ve been staying at my parent’s house the past week, keeping the cats company while my parents were off hiking. It was nice, it is still home in a way. Even so. Coming home home, to my apartment, makes me v. v. happy. I want to argue that it’s because for my uses, my home is practical. Practical makes me happy.

And also. My things. People who say things don’t make you happy lie. They do. It might be temporary, but still. I take anything I can get.

Cat company. I always feel so special when cats choose to hang out with me. In truth, I’m about as special as a piece of furniture, but never mind that! Prefer it when they choose to lie next to me tho, as opposed to on.

This guy, for example, does not generally keep this distance:

He prefers to be as close to your face as is possible. For me, this is the perfect distance. Means you can get up and make a cup of tea, do a load of laundry, water the plants, or any of the bizillion things my brain comes up with. It doesn’t seem to be a big fan of sitting still for more than 15 minutes at a time.

Feminists. In general. Feminists are without a doubt some of the funniest people. A recent example: assholesonline. Let me explain. This account is run by Linnea Claesson. She receives a threat from some guy, as per usual, this one says he’s going to “get his boys and visit her” unless she takes down a picture she’s posted. She refuses. Which is enough for me to cheer.

It gets better.

She posts this little clip (watch watch watch!):

The sign on the door reads Welcome Fredrik (name of the guy) and in brackets and his boys. In the caption she’s written I don’t get visitors too often so I’m VERY excited!

The fact that someone had this idea at all makes me insanely happy.

It doesn’t end here.

Dinner with Fredrik and his boys. She’s set the table and is waiting.

As I was saying. Feminists are hilarious.

Super enthusiastic people. You know, people like Beth Ditto.

Vegan option! A vegan option that has been making me quite happy lately, is this ice cream:

This is not only the best vegan ice cream, it is better than their non-vegan ice cream. I.e. it is creamier, and the flavor is all there.

PS. They also make dairy and soy free ice cream, in case you’re not a fan of the soy. It has a rice base and it’s just as nice.

Future plans. As in future plans to have time off work to go somewhere to see a band.

If I thought some more about going to the UK to see Deaf Havana, I’d be a slightly less miserable person. Can’t quite seem to remember to tho.

Five songs

In general, happy songs do not make me happy.

There is one glaring exception: Die Ärzte. I can’t quite explain this. I don’t think they do anything except for happy songs. Is it because I read their happy as sarcasm?

I’ve already mentioned their Monsterparty which always and without fail puts a smile on face because it’s beyond ridiculous, but I guess 3-Tage-Bart isn’t far behind?

…and you kinda need to understand German for this to make any sense at all. If it wasn’t for the lyrics, I’d never listen to this. In fact I didn’t, until my German was good enough for me to understand what the songs were about.

The type of songs that frequently do make my happy, are songs like Stray from the Path’s First World Problem Child.

Because aggressive. I like it.

There is also something about Diamanda Galás that makes me happy. Her mere existence makes me happy.

Like feminists, that someone would even think about doing what she does, it makes me happy. For example, she did an entire record of screaming, called Schrei X. It not exactly made for everyday listening, you probably can’t listen to it more often than you would watch a movie. It’s a performance piece I would say.

This is one of her more accessible tracks:

I’m also going to list Thrice’s Black Honey. Because. Not only is it a great track, which in itself is enough to make a person happy, but also. Every time I’ve been to see Architects they play it pre-show, and it makes me v. v. happy to have someone other than myself playing me this song.

Also. Miserable/depressing songs make me happy. Amity Affliction, they just do it so, so well.

Hitherdither? You up for it?

In which I introduce a tag with a short rant

I’ve been roaming around WordPress to find new blogs to follow.

It ain’t going great.

I’m specifically looking for blogs written by people my age, because life advice from does get a bit frustrating when you’re no longer 20, and also blogs written by people with similar interests, and/or a more varied content.

Makeup is great and all, but I have other interests too.

Being even more specific…I need more blogs that rant on music related topics. Rant! I don’t want anything under the impression of being objective, no reviews or “let me tell you about this band” because BORING. I want to know about what music people consume, the how, what and when.

I would say I also need more feminist blogs. But there are too many types of feminism that I don’t agree with. Not to mention the ones I’ve stumbled on trying to explain the basics to others while trying to be not too extreme (WTF!? Be extreme or go away). Just makes me want to ram my head in the wall. VALERIE BRYSON, ANYONE?!?

I’ll just stick with the feminists I follow on other platforms. Besides, you really only need fannyarsinoe in your life and you’re covered. (YES I’M A FANGIRL, can’t help it.)

What I did find, however, is a good music tag. Next best thing surely!?

I think so. Let’s go!

(Didn’t say where this one is from, thusly no credit.)

Which bands/artist do you own the most albums by?
If we’re talking about physical albums, then Nick Cave. Yes, I kept them when I decluttered. Einstürzende Neubauten is a close second, and only because they haven’t released as many albums. They’re the nicest ones in my collection though, paper casing. Just saying.

The Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus casing tho, also not bad. A favorite track:

What was the last song you listened to?
Blood in My Mouth by Amity Affliction.

In my blog search, I also came across one blogger who complained about how Amity + In Flames (among others) had changed their sound, and not to the better, so I had to do a compare and contrast. Which is a fun little exercise I highly recommend.

Not sure why I felt compelled to, because the whole premise of the post was it is not as heavy thusly it is worse. SIGH. Yes because we all know heavy equals good. JFC.

In addition to which I don’t agree; neither Amity nor In Flames have become less heavy with each release. They sort of vary. Not that it matters! Because heavy doesn’t equal good.

Seems to me people are going to have learn to differentiate between heavy and a more chaotic sound.

Here’s what I’m thinking. There are bands that at the beginning of their career have ideas that they perhaps not quite have the skills to execute, which makes them more creative. This contributes to a more interesting and somewhat chaotic sound, sometimes mistaken for heavy/less accessible, which in turn means fewer people “get it” contributing to whoever does get it feeling that they’re just sooo cool.

It’s so boring I want to cry.

This song tho!

What’s in your CD player right now?

There’s a CD player in my car. If there is a CD in it it’s either All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us by Architects or Relief Through Release by Tura Satana.

If you have somehow managed to not listen to AOGHAU already, you really should give this one track a listen, promise you won’t regret it!

What was the last show you attended?
in June. They played C.A.N.C.E.R. Not their most accessible track I would say. You?

What was the greatest show you’ve been to?
This sort of assumes that there’s a great difference between shows. I just find that most shows I’ve been to lately, well I mean they’re carried out by competent people, you know? And I’m not overly impressed by people putting on too much of a show.

For example, if I compare the 3 Bring Me the Horizon gigs I’ve been to, I liked the first one the best, the one without all the screens and the arena-size venue. Because the setlist was better and I liked that they were lit from behind. It was a nice effect. I like simple things.

Track that fell off the setlist for the arena tour:

What was the worst show you’ve ever been to?

Erm. I could argue Being as An Ocean because I left after two songs, but I wasn’t there primarily to see Being as an Ocean so that’s a bit unfair. And the main reason for leaving was I was dead tired.

So I’m going to argue 30 Seconds to Mars mainly because:

  1. I still feel Jared is acting the part.
  2. Fine, invite people on stage, but don’t fucking spend 15 minutes picking the exact people to come up. It doesn’t make for a good show.
  3. Bringing out the acoustic guitar. Just nooooo. I’m not saying it’s bad per se, it’s just not my cup of tea.

When they started picking people out of the crowd I left because that’s just where I draw the line.

And anyway. They’d already played The Kill.

Absolutely not seeing them again. No matter how much I love The Kill.

What is the most musically involved you have ever been?
Let’s just say I haven’t been.

What show are you looking forward to?
Deaf Havana
! Brighton!

Also desperately hoping Stray from the Path will add Casey to their UK/Europe tour. It’s extremely unlikely, but my brain is all Capsize is on the bill! They played last time I saw Casey, so maybe!?!??

Yeayea, I’ve got a hangup.

What is your favorite band shirt?

Mmm. Either my Manson one or the Bring Me one.

What musician would you like to hang out with for a day?

I’m not sure I’d want that? What would we do? Go for vegan eats in Glasgow? OH I KNOW. Glasvegas’ Jonna. Because she hangs out in Glasgow. And is from Norrland. I.e. supercool.

And she plays the piano in addition to drums standing. I don’t know how you could be cooler than that?

Who is one musician or group you wish would make a comeback?

I don’t really listen a lot to any band that doesn’t exist right now. I mean there’s My Chemical Romance, but unlike the rest of the world, it’s not something I crave. Don’t get me wrong, I love them, but I don’t need them to make a comeback. There are other bands.

Also. I used to want Panik back. They’ve recently made a comeback of sorts. And. I’m not happy about it. It makes me sad.

Because. This:

I don’t understand it.

Who is one band/artist you’ve never seen live but always wanted to?

I’m going to have to say Nine Inch Nails, aren’t I?

Surely there will be a European tour eventually?

Name four or more flawless albums.

Actually flawless and in I wouldn’t skip a single song? Live Through This by Hole, Lost Forever // Lost Together by Architects and All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us by the same band and Deaf Havana’s All These Countless Nights.

Almost made the list: Relief Through Release by Tura Satana. That goddamn Nirvana cover, cannot stand it. Let the Ocean Take Me; the outro of Never Alone makes me cringe, ditto last track of Thrice’s To Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere.

How many concerts have you been to in total?
Not that many in my opinion. Can’t be bothered to count though.

Who have you seen the most live?

Architects. Five times. Which in my opinion isn’t that many. But it depends on your frame of reference I guess.

What is your favorite movie soundtrack?
Trouble Every Day by Tindersticks. It’s on this compilation:

What was your last musical ‘phase’ before you wisened up?
Before I fell into this black hole of post-hardcore type music (it’s what tells me I to listen to, OK?), I was listening to a lot of singer-songwriter type music, i.e. lots of Richard Hawley, Iain Morrisson, the National, Tindersticks, you know, nice music that doesn’t ask a lot of its listener. I still listen to it, just not as much.

What is your ‘guilty pleasure’ that you hate to admit liking?
I tend to only feel guilty about what ever I’m obsessively listening to at the time, i.e. I feel more guilty about the amount than the actual performer. Except for. I currently feel zero percent guilty that I’m listening to Amity as if there are no other bands.

Think we’ve established I do feel slightly guilty about listening to Korn though. Because they are not with the feminist agenda and I find that problematic.

I obviously tag hitherdither. Anyone else up for a rant about music? I’ll tag you!
