Goodbye to June

June was an excellent month in terms of music.

A. I learned to love Korn

I had decided long ago Korn was not a band for me. Because whyyy would anyone bother with Korn when you could be listening to Tura Satana?

And if you know your music history you can quickly deduce that this was a decision I made in the late 90s.

However. Their latest releases are so my taste. I mean Black is the Soul; I can’t not like it. And if there is something I love is learning to like a band I’ve previously…not been to keen on. Put mildly.

Question is. Is it worth while seeing Korn live at this point in time? Or is it just too late?

B. New releases

In This Moment’s Roots. Insanely catchy track. Also in love with the Oh Lord video. It’s the perfect blend of Lady Gaga and Marilyn Manson.

Pvris; What’s Wrong. This song alone is reason enough for me to brave Fryshuset in November. Really. Though I still hesitate. Because Stockholm. It is not a place I love visiting. Even less so since having been to Malmö for the first time. Why can’t all bands just play there? Not least because so far, pretty much all venues in Sweden seem to be better than Fryshuset. Fryshuset can’t even get the sound anywhere near acceptable.

C. (Re)discovering old releases

Deaf Havana’s Anemophobia. Both the first part on the Fools and Worthless Liars album, and this second part which isn’t on Spotify (I think?).

Crystal Castles’ I’m not in love. Found it on an old mixed CD I keep in the car. It’s still brilliant. As I’m sure you know.

I basically want all songs to feature Robert Smith and be this sad.

David Bowie’s I’m deranged from the Lost Highway soundtrack. Has to be my favorite Bowie track. (Popular opinion, yes?)

D. Architects

Played in Malmö and as you might imagine, it was brilliant. Might just have been the best one so far. Even if it was on the sweaty side (tho not as sweaty/lacking oxygen as Thrice at the Forum last year).

Malmo was excellent thank you @edmasonphoto

D. Deaf Havana booked a UK tour

And I’m apparently going to the Brighton show. I mean probably. I’ve got a ticket, I just haven’t made any travel arrangements. Or checked if I can have time off. I’ve got a creeping suspicion we might have something booked at work.

Not that -that- would necessarily stop me. I have no work ethics.

Reading was also not bad, mainly because of

Bitterfittan 2 by Maria Sveland

It is decidedly one of the great feminist novels. Oh yes, it’s a fact, not at all a matter of opinion.

Gawd I love being so friggin old I don’t even care if nobody agrees with me. Not that I cared before, I was just more likely to be influenced by the opinions of others, whereas now, if you tell me this is not a good book/not feminist, I’m just going to think you’re wrong.

Most reviewers have basically hated this book.

What a lot of bores.

This is how I know it’s summer: I start wearing activewear to work. I.e., it is now summer in Sweden.

This makes sense. Wearing the activewear I mean. I can go straight from work to workout without changing. Which I feel comfortable with because working at uni, there’s pretty much no one working in the summer. Or at least they’re not at the office. Except for me. Because I’m admin and use my holidays for going to shows that are not in summer.

That being said.

Leggings. It is a gift from the gods. I can’t be bothered with clothes that restrict movement. Cannot! Just give me a pair of leggings and a loose top. It’s all I want to wear, ever.

Although. I do realize that it is at times inappropriate. Unfortunate that. I would prefer being oblivious. Being oblivious is so underrated.

A few things were less than brilliant.

My period has suddenly decided it’s going to be regular. WHY HAS THIS EVIL BEFALLEN ME I AM TOO OLD ETC.

On the one hand, it’s great, no extra hormones for me (..might also mean I’m healthier than I have been, but what’s the fun in that?), on the other, my period is evil.

Regular period means more opportunities for it to turn up uninvited. And it likes to do that.

Period: Travel you say!? I shall come along for the ride.
Me: NOoooooOO.

Which leads me to….

I love Clue and all, but it can’t predict my periods for shit.

Me: Yup, that’ll be another 7 days then.
Clue: 25 days to go!
Me: WHY am I giving you ALL THIS INFO and all you give me is a goddamn average number??? Might as well be using a calculator! Are you seriously telling me you can’t see the signs!? Because I fucking can.
Clue: *remains clueless*
Me: *rolls eyes*

We’re currently not in agreement.

And one correction.

I dyed my hair. As mentioned last month. Aaand. It’s not going to be the last time. Forgot how much I love this color, even if it stains all that isn’t black.

Guess it just means I need more black things in my life.

Next month

I’ll just be waiting for August and vacation.

Top Ten Tuesday

Does anyone not know about Top Ten Tuesday at this point? Weekly feature created by The Broke and Bookish und so weiter? Ja? We all know right? More info here, if you haven’t a clue what I’m on about.

This weeks topic: Best Books You’ve Read In 2017 So Far

I have read a total of 19 books so far, nine of which were just bloody brilliant.

17331223

Bonkers by Jennifer Saunders. Oh you know Jennifer Saunders. How could you not want to read about the creator of AbFab?

She’s very good at sticking to the funny bits, the bits you want to know, rather than telling every tedious detail of her life. Soo..yay?

Except for that chapter about procrastination. That was…ill-advised.

17985896Mad about the Boy by Helen Fielding. I’m mad about Fielding’s style (oh. how. witty.). I just love it. Never mind that this is basically antifeminist crap, and that I’m confused as to whether main character Bridget truly is concerned and knows about feminism, or if Fielding is mocking feminism through her character, oooor…I’m sure there are more options but I just don’t get it. Which makes me not like that particular detail very much.

Still. I do like it. This is probably because it is relatable. I feel like the mess Bridget is. Sure, I’m a different type of mess entirely, but that doesn’t seem to make any difference to me.

One But. It could have ended when the boytoy dumped her. It would have been a better ending.

32603447

Bitterfittan 2 by Maria Sveland. This is something as rare as a book about sisterhood. It also has a very obvious feminist agenda. I like obvious books. I like books that say what they mean. I like books that erm. shoot straight and speak the truth to quote Entombed…

This book turns me into a gushing fangirl and I don’t know where to begin or what to say. It’s the kind of book I want to use to hit people over the head with.

Reviewers seems to mainly dislike it. Like a lot. I take that as a sign that this is a true feminist work. This is my logic: because we live in a patriarchy a book that is a threat to the current order will be disliked by people in general. Flawless reasoning on my part indeed.

15771560Fördömd by Johanne Hildebrandt. I think we’ve established my love for Hildebrandt’s work is unconditional. She can do no wrong. I wrote about it here.

Horror, archeology and Norse mythology all at once. In addition to a strong female cast. What more could one ask for?

15745753Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell. I think I called this the best love story I’ve ever read? Or something to that effect. Still valid.

31833839Vad ska en flicka göra? by Annika Lantz. I’ve already told you about how I love this book. Here.

17345603

I kroppen min by Kristian Gidlund. A book about dying. I like books about dying? Talked about this one before too, here.

25442534

Röta by Siri Pettersen. It starts by quoting Nine Inch Nail’s Ruiner. If it was bad I would never admit it. It’s not though, best of the three in the trilogy I would say.

So basically. I don’t really need to read any more books this year. Or at least not any good one.

10 things that need to get the fuck out of my feeds

Anything nail polish. OMFG. I’m more interested in cars. At least I have one.

Outfit tips. Outfits to finish this summer in style?? Outfits you should already own?? Pretty winter outfits??? Cute summer outfits?? Wedding!!???! WHO DO YOU THINK I AM?!

Children. Please kill me now.

Johnny Depp. WHY does he keep popping up in my Pinterest feed?! Never googled in my life, how is he there??

Feminine anything. Hairdos. Shoes. Themes. Just NO. To be clear, examples of my most recent style inspo: Anders Fridén in In Flames, Twiggy in the 90s (it’s constant, that type of recent), Jonathan Davis – I know none of them have any style really, but that’s not the point.

Peanut butter. Because I need to forget, OK?

Instagram stories. It just bothers me at this point. There are like three users whose stories I watch. And I follow more than 100 accounts. Sooo…

Retweets. Didn’t there use to be a setting where you could block retweets + likes? Which, by the way, I thought I was using but clearly no!?

Football. I know it’s my own fault because of certain users I follow. But come on! You’re a musician, get a different account for your football tweets. Goddammit.

Stupid band/artist tweets by PR people who just don’t get Twitter at all. I.e. not funny, not relevant, just PR -Hello InsertArtistNameHere has released a record-. What no REALLY I had no idea!? Morons.

You want to kill my love for a band/artist, that’s the way to go.

Instead, I could use

More cats. I mean there can never be enough cats.

Alternative outfits/style. I know there are lots and lots of people with quirkier style, how do I get them into my feed??

Just less food. Less. Lots less. That its vegan doesn’t help.

More sarcastic comments. On anything. But on politics is obviously great.

More extreme feminism. What is the point of feminism if it doesn’t upset people??

Cows? Because why not?

Korn. I google Korn. I watch Korn. Why do I have to search out Korn for myself while you serve me Johnny Depp who I’m just not interested in???

More Casey posts. In general. I just want everyone to be as active on social media as Architects when they’re on tour.

Glasgow. Considering the fact that I follow Glasgow Living, there is awful little Glasgow in my feeds. I was expecting more.

…might want some posts to be clearer. As to who’s posting. Because there are a lot of people on stages and large crowds. Sometimes confused as to who’s posting. Might also want some people, who are on the famous side of the spectrum, to use more than their first name. If you just write Tom, I don’t know which one. Just be TomInsertBandNameHere, please?

So yea. Working hard on being bitter and then some.

3 songs using cancer as metaphor

Korn; Insane. This cancer finds everything I hide. Living my life horrified.

The Amity Affliction; Pittsburgh. It’s like there’s cancer in my blood. It’s like there’s water in my lungs.

Architects; Black Blood. We’ve found the cancer inside our heads. There’s no turning back now, we’re as good as dead.

Two of these, I’m not sure that they..make sense..?

3 songs using allusions

Allusion has to be my favorite figure of speech. Especially when used in lyrics.

Basically, what an allusion is, is an indirect reference to another text.

For example!

My Ruin; Terror. I had a dream Joe, that you were standing in the middle of an open road //I had a dream Joe that your hands were raised up to the sky and your mouth was covered in foam. Alludes to Nick Cave’s I had a dream, Joe.

Tairrie (i.e. the My Ruin vocalist) is the queen of allusions, she uses it in lyrics often and well. The entire Relief Through Release record reads like a long allusion to some of the best parts of 90s pop culture. I especially enjoy the Romeo + Juliet references in Omnia Vinat Amor. So well done.

Casey; Hell. Someday you will ache, the way I ache. To be fair, I don’t know if this is actually an allusion or just coincidence, unlike Tairrie. She is a Nick Cave fan; it’s def no coincidence. Plus it’d be a weird coincidence. This though, it is a repeat of a line in Hole’s Doll parts.

Markus Krunegård; Everybody hurts. Obviously refers to R.E.M.’s Everybody Hurts: Där lärde jag mig gilla Everyboy Hurts (English: It’s where I learned to love Everybody Hurts). Unusually clumsy reference for being Markus; he’s usually so good with words.

How many hoodies + sweatshirts does one person need?

ONE. The one you keep in your gym bag for after workout.

TWO. Band merch. Really depends how many bands you like. I just like the one. Think we’ve established that.

THREE. The one for that one time you were underweight and needed children’s sizes, and was really cheap to boot (i.e. bought on sale).

FOUR. The one for when you thought bright colors were great idea. Yeah, that one time.

FIVE. One that is long and under which you can fit another long sleeve. For when it’s cold out and you want to go out walking. You might want it it two sizes/colors. Because. You walk a lot?

SIX. That one you just love. Actually you need three of it. Different sizes/colors. And it was on sale.

SEVEN. Long one for Saturday mornings. In the winter.

EIGHT. That one you wear when visiting your parents. Because that’s where it’s at. It’s bright orange. Which might also be a reason it’s still there…

NINE. Camouflage print. From the men’s section. Just waiting to embarrass some guy because he’s wearing the same hoodie as an old lady. So basically, one for laughs.

TEN. A grey one from Monki. Because grey goes great with your red hair. Bonus points for long enough to cover upper thighs, but sleeves that are just the right length, and a pocket for your walkman phone.

ELEVEN. Short, wide, with lizards. Did I mention need?

TWELVE. Pink one. Because. Goes great with your red hair. Let’s not talk about the stupid text H&M thought it was a great idea to print on the sleeves.

THIRTEEN. Wolf. That you don’t wear much because it ruins all of the black vests you wear under it.

FOURTEEN. One from Primark that you just could not buy because of nostalgia.

FIFTEEN. Distressed one. Because it makes you feel like Oliver Sykes. Never mind that it’s from Top Shop and not Drop Dead.

SIXTEEN. Animal print.

SEVENTEEN. Best purple color ever.

EIGHTEEN. A warm one. For the coldest of winter.

NINETEEN. Long one with ears. Because you’re about 5 years old.

TWENTY. One with a cat on.

Let’s say that’s all of them. Let’s say I only wear hoodies + sweatshirts. Ever.

Yea.

Let’s.

Summer playlist

Ah Spotify, how I love it when you send me here’s what you’ve been listening to emails, especially when it includes a playlist.

And it always does.

Also. This way I can pretend that I have a summer playlist.

I mean I do. But I’m not sure that anything about it says summer.

Unless.

Murder by Within Temptation, does it make you think of summer?

No? Maybe Ropes by In Flames?

What you mean no!?!  What about Shine On by Amity Affliction?

Come on! It has shine in the title. Practically the same as sun.

…if you don’t listen to the lyrics at all.

I’m not complaining. I just think it’s kind of funny.

2 protein packed vegan meals

I’m in the middle of tweaking all my meals to add enough protein to hit some completely random magic number on a daily basis. Yesyes, my protein obsession continues.

Nono, science has got nothing to do with it.

Let’s get on with it!

Here’s two meals I created based on this little guy:

final1495895958893.jpg
Vegan cooking cream. Obviously.

Pasta with an aubergine tarragon and mustard sauce + a favorite bean.

final1495895999157

A trick that I’m using for both meals to really boost the protein is bean pasta. Bean pasta is an amazing invention and it will get you much further than just plain beans. However much I love beans, I have a limit of 100 g/meal. Any more than that in a single serving is just too much.

Prepare your pasta according to instructions on the package. Approx. 80 g should be enough for 2 servings. Cut up an aubergine and fry until practically black. Because you’re going to be adding sun dried tomatoes, use the oil they’re in to fry your aubergine. Less waste + delicious. Add 200 g of whatever bean you prefer and let them get some color before turning down the heat and adding half a package of iMat (125 ml), some spinach, sun dried tomatoes, tarragon, mustard, salt, pepper, and bit of garlic in some form for good measure.

Serve with some fresh tomatoes.

Curry chickpeas and pasta

final1496132285012.jpg

I love combining chickpeas, curry and pasta. Added bonus: peanuts. Well. Not actual peanuts. I’m using peanut flour. Because peanut butter remains a trigger and I can’t keep it in the house.

This will serve 3:

Make your bean pasta according to instructions on the package. 75 g should do it. Meanwhile, fry up 450 g of cabbage in whatever oil you prefer. I might have used Carlshamn margerine, it’s what I usually use with curry. When the cabbage has reached desired softness, add what’s left of your iMat package + bit of water, curry, peanut flour (10 g/serving, also gives a nice protein boost) and finally 200 g chickpeas. Although you could well let them get some color in the pan with the cabbage. Whatever you fancy!

Oh. And don’t forget salt and pepper. Ganz ganz wichtig!

Serve with pasta and cover the lot with tomatoes. Because tomatoes are nice. And takes away some of the sting of the curry.

I have a lot of questions #4

Can I has another cup of tea!??!?

Why is quinoa advertised as a great source of protein? Far as I can tell it’s the exact same protein content as pasta. Not the right quinoa? I’m confused.

How do everyone else listen to music? Everyone else: This is my favorite band! They played this great track when I went to see them live, never heard before! …but the track is from 2011 and v. v. popular + it’s your favorite band? (According to Spotify, and why would Spotify lie?) I don’t understand. How is this your favorite band??

Where can I find a cruelty-free toothpaste that doesn’t turn my lips into dry flakes? I’m at my wits’ end. I’ve tried just about all brands I can get my hands on (not counting the ones that were not bad that I got in the UK; for obvious reasons I can’t keep buying toothpaste in the UK).

…when can I go back to Scotland? Yeah. That Scotland vlog I just watched was a mistake. I need to save my monies, not go to Scotland. I have no business being in Scotland.

Is there a barley shortage? I never find barley in the story anymore. Not happy about it, because it is a favorite.

Why is there no tracking rage function on Clue? I want to track irrational rage! I have lots of it. Also rational rage, but this irrational rage. It’s getting old being furious because your headphones are in a tangle, or it’s raining, or can’t get jacket off quickly enough because HOT. For example. Also would like to track not cravings, but rather when you want to eat ALL THE THINGS ALL THE TIME.

What is Linkin Park even doing? What do they want and where do they come from? The new album. So many questions. Also: would their sound improve if someone introduced them to saaaayy..the latest Architects record? I’d like to think so. But you know, who knows?!??

Whyy is Nick Cave playing the Globe? Why?? I’ve finally come around and do want to go. But this Globe thing, it’s a problem. I don’t like it.

Is Glasvegas ever going to release a new record? (Did I ask this qustion before? Still wondering tho!)

Is it just me, or is the latest Korn record actually really good? Yea, yea, I know it was released last year. It’s not as if I actively follow Korn. I mean it’s not Tura Satana, but you know, as close as it gets.

Is there anything a person could do to make Thrice play Sweden? Anything??

OK then.

I think I’ve managed to illustrate the point my sister was making on Wednesday, that really, I’m the main character of High Fidelity. I don’t have many thoughts that are not related to listening to music.

5 reasons to love Insta

Long gone are the days of using Insta for makeup inspo.

OK, maybe not long gone, but I don’t do that anymore.

With one exception; the account run by the girl who bleaches her eyebrows? Yes, that one. Couldn’t give it up. Obviously.

But there are many other reasons to love Insta. My top 5 reasons:

There’s lots of feminism on Insta. Keeps you up to date, gives you inspiration, contributes to general mental wellbeing. Current favorite: fannyarsinoe. She’s full of feminist wisdom and makes lovely art.

Examples:

English: To those of you who think I’m a feminist because unable to get guy: I’m not feminist because I’m ugly, I’m ugly because I’m feminist.

It is a shame she writes in Swedish, limits her reach. Also seems unfair to all non-Swedish speakers. You’re missing out.

Silliness, sarcasm, irony. Like this:

English: Tell me more. I’m dying of curiousity.

Vegan inspo! Moby makes sure we don’t forget why we’re vegan. Sometimes with numbers:

Planner ideas!

Architects. If I have to expand on this I will just start going on about how I do follow lots of bands, some of which I don’t even really listen to, so apparently I just like to have people on stages in my feed. Obviously just lies I tell myself. So let’s just leave it.

NYC night 2 tonight! It's a sell out ✅📸: @edmasonphoto

Excellent jump, sir.

Unfortunately. This also comes with some creepy pics of large groups of men. That’s when this comes in handy, to counteract any skin-crawling feelings:
